... read more

I recently had about two weeks for my winter vacation and decided I was going to take full advantage of the time to visit some other countries while I'm here. First stop: Hong Kong!! After talking to several people / asking for advice, Hong Kong was one place that was suggested by a few. I've read about the city and seen photos and was definitely intrigued. My flight from Busan to Hong Kong (with a layover in Shanghai) was uneventful enough... best thing to hope for when traveling by plane! I arrived in Hong Kong on Wednesday evening, had my money converted at their airport, and got onto the city bus that would take me to within a block or two of my hostel. Task #1: finding my hostel without getting totally lost! Considering this was ... read more

We are just waiting for our transfer to take us to the airport to fly to Melbourne. We have had a great time in Hong Kong. A fascinating city which we have only really glanced at during our 2 days. We did do a guided tour yesterday which enabled us to see quite a lot of the main touristy bits. Some of the photos show the amazing skyscrapers.... read more

This is our afternoon siesta time on the second day of our visit to Hong Kong. In case you aren’t familiar with the word, siesta means rest or nap in Cantonese. When one wakes at 5 AM (jet lag issue) and walks all morning, the siesta after lunch time noodles is welcomed. We’ve been busy this last day and a half but you don't want me to detail our visits to the Ladies night market, the Temple night market, the Stanley market, the Peak, the tram ride down, the walk to Hollywood road and then the small streets off the main road that sell everything, I mean everything. You don’t want the details of our meals, Dim Sum, Peking Duck, noodles and more noodles, so I won’t write about any of it. Hong Kong is dense; ... read more

I have been thinking. Plenty of time to do it. This flight is fourteen and a half hours long. How many dumb movies can one watch? I just watched one of the dumbest, “Nights in Rodathe” with Richard Gere and Dianne Lane. Even their pretty faces can’t save this badly written, badly acted bottle of artificially flavored syrup. I didn’t read the Nicholas Sparks novel (and wouldn’t admit it if I did - what pablum!) but I still knew everything that was going to happen in the movie and the sequence of these events before the initial credits were done being listed. Yes he dies. Sorry if I spoiled the ending. I’ve also been unable to read in the dark cabin as I keep falling instantly to sleep. I have been reduced to just thinking and ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Today has been a good day filled to the brim with Chinese heritage sites. I begun the day with visit to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery (fair warning, it's not actually a monastery since there are no monks living here, the temple is run by laymen). It's a sweaty hike up a steep hill to reach the monastery and the path there is lined with golden statues. I must admit that some of the statues here are really creepy and not in the good creepy awe-inspiring way but in a just plain creepy way. Regardless it's a nice place to visit and definitely worth you time. After the visit to the monastery I made my way to the Che Kung Temple which is absolutely amazing, it is a Ming Dynasty temple dedicated ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! After a good nights sleep I feel like I've settled into the new time-zone quite well. That actually went quicker than I had expected. I started this day with a brisk walk to the Central Station where I took the MTR to Tung Chung, this is where you take the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car up to the Po Lin Monastery and the Tian Tan Buddha. The ride is cool and steep but so is the price, it costs 165 HKD for a return trip and 115 for a single trip, and that's for the standard cabin, you can also go in a crystal cabin which features a glass bottom. I don't remember the single fair for that one but I think the return fair was 255 HKD. You can also choose ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! After a long flight from Copenhagen to Istanbul to Hong Kong I've finally arrived in this wonderful city and I love it already! It's a bustling metropolis and it's night-sky is lit up by tonnes of lights. It is such an amazing place and I look forward to seeing more of it. So far today I haven't really done much since I arrived fairly late and was delayed first from Copenhagen and then again from Istanbul due to snow. The flights has still been good though, Turkish Airlines are a really nice company, they served food even on the short flight of less than three hours and every seat has a great entertainment centre with a truck-load of good movies. They also handed out slippers and a good sleepers kit. Thumbs up! ... read more

Hong Kong, what is there to say about Hong Kong that hasn't already been said? There are only three things to do in Hong Kong; Shop, Eat, and Drink lots. Sure you can do all those things, though I wouldn't say my budget is as high as many of the visitors there. For those who go into Hong Kong and only have that to say, I feel sorry for you. There is so much more to explore beyond the glitz and glamor of the high-end shopping that seem to attract all the visitors. To experience the real Hong Kong you have to get off the beaten path, although for a city of 7 million, compacted down to the size of a small city, there really is no “unbeaten path”. Please find yourself walking down the streets ... read more
