Maybe you’ve seen the Hong Kong television advertisement “LIVE IT, LOVE IT- HONG KONG” that says it all! After living in HK from 1996 -1998 we’re very excited to be back for a visit. When we arrived at the JW Marriott on HK island we couldn’t believe our good fortune to be upgraded to a room with a harbor view. As soon as we got into the room we spent several minutes just enjoying the skyline. Then something surprising happened. Fireworks began to explode from the tops of the skyscrapers all around us. What a welcome back! Although we would like to think it was all just for us it was in celebration of Golden Week. Golden Week is part of the Asian labor day and May day holidays. It’s hard to believe it has been ... read more

Its supposedly one of those unique cities in the world, up there with New York and Paris. Why? Cos its so darned busy and crowded. But yes, it does have something special - watches - lots of cheap watches!! The day started out fantastically with a FREE BUSINESS CLASS flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong. How did we get this free, and why was it business class. Well, let me teach you a lesson in not letting anything go to waste. You see, in 2003 when Melenie and I flew to London, we went on Japan Airlines. And we had the clever idea of joining the Japan Airlines frequent flyer programme (it was free) simply because we had nothing else to do on the plane and the form was sitting in front of us. Two years ... read more

We took a night train from Youngshou at 8pm on the 5th of April. We arrived in Guangzhou to wait for the Hydrofoil all day in a hotel room - Catching the boat we arrived in Hong Kong about 7.30. Explored the Temple Street night markets. In the Morning caught the star fairy across to hong kong island, took the tram peak to the top of the island. Quite a misty day, so the photos aren't the best. Left Hong Kong to fly to London at 3pm. Would have been nice to have longer in Hong Kong. Lots of farewells to our group - had become quite attached to them all. ... read more

HK exceeded my expectations. It was so easy to get around (especially with a Octopus card - HK version of our Oyster card) - buses, trams, underground, overground (wombling free!!), and ferries all easy to use. I had a list of all the places I wanted to get to and 9 days was only just the right amount, then the rain hampered me and I really could have done with at least another 2 - 3 days there. If you think HK is just high rises and shops - noooo way!!! The main parts of HK are high rises and shops, but hop on a train and in 15 minutes you can be in the suburbs and very much a local way of life. If anyone comes here, I strongly advise you leave some time for ... read more

Hong Kong Sevens Now that we had had a practice run at the Manila 10s, we felt sure that we were ready to take the infamous Sevens by storm. This weekend rates as one of the best in my life. We had absolutely perfect weather, not a cloud in the sky. Stashing hipflasks down our pants and applying our most innocent expressions (Kate means pure) we waltzed into the stadium grounds unscathed. It was only 9.30am but already the crowd was building. We scanned the area and headed straight for the most festive area, the South Stand. The South Stand is famous amongst rugby heads and other Seven’s supporters like ourselves. It is where all the madness begins, and the tournament would not be the same without it. We quickly located a group of fun loving ... read more

Arrived in Hong Kong through a cloud of fog so thick you could barely see 20 ft in front of you. It reminded me of my first arrival into Kuwait, I couldn´t see a thing, and the next day you feel like you´re in a completely different place when you can actually see something. Anyways, so Hong Kong was a little more honky tonk than Japan...as expected(at least in Kawloon). Side streets that make you feel like you´re either in the movie Rush Hour 2, or some Van Damm movie running through the alleys. Then only a few blocks away there is the Central area where there are skyscrapers, Ferrari´s and Lamborghini´s driving around and I feel underdressed without a suit (which you can have custom made for $100 like most places in Southeast Asia if ... read more

Well, we're finally on the road and five days into our week in Hong Kong. We've been all over the place using the fantastic public transport (buses, trams, trains and the famous 'Star Ferry'). On Monday we visited Kowloon Park. The highlight was the ten or so minutes spent looking at a giant frog sunning itself in a fountain. We eventually decided that the unfortunate amphibian was not sunbathing but had in fact expired earlier that day...otherwise the park was very nice and a welcome refuge from the city bustle. Later on that day we visited the waterfront promenade and the 'Avenue of Stars' (the Hong Kong film industry's equivalent of Hollywood's 'Walk of Fame') and were surprised at the number of names we knew. Finally, we went up The Peak for sunset and amazing views ... read more

So the highlight of this day was to meet up with Jacqueline, who is a friend of a friend from SF. She took me to a place called Dragon I (cute, right), which is a spectacular Dim Sum place. It turns out that we could eat all of the Dim Sum that we wanted for a set price of HK$110. This is a good deal! Even if you think in terms of water bottles, which I didn't have to anymore. She also told me what it's like to live in HK, and we chatted about all sorts of things. All in all, it was a fantastic experience! Plus, the place had what I thought to be the coolest bathroom on the planet (that is until I saw an even better bathroom the next day). ... read more

Howdy all, Life is tough at here in the East..........the Cantonese is coming along nicely (3 words counts as fluent right????) Have done a fair bit of stuff, despite battling jet lag. Went on a night cruise this evening around Hong Kong. There is a channel that seperates Hong Kong Island from Kowloon Peninsula (where we are staying)......get your maps out to check it out. Also the tram upto 'The Peak' is a must see. Fantastic view over the city and surrounding areas. The angle the tram travels at is a little worrying, but it seems to make it to the top most of the time in 1 piece ! Accomodation : Metropole Hotel - US$67 per night. Beautiful ! We are staying in the Metropole Hotel on Waterloo Road. It is expensive at US$266 for ... read more

I finally saw HK. This city never sleeps. I'm finally updating this entry. Today is February 2008. This trip was back in 2004! Hopefully, I can remember most of what happened. HK was part of my Taiwan/HK trip with my friend Sam and his wife Teresa. Our stay in HK was short - maybe 3~4 days. After arriving in Hong Kong Internal Airport, Sam, Teresa, and I took a private car to the hotel courtesy of the hotel. The hotel was located somewhere near Kowloon and Yau Ma Tei. This was a time for Sam and Teresa to rekindle their relationship. As such, my time in HK was pretty much solo. And I'm perfectly fine with that. One of the first things I did was to learn the layout of the city. I spent most of ... read more
