KASHGAR DAY 3: TUESDAY 8.7.14 Have done very little today. Went for a walk in the Mosque area, quite interesting. Changed and patched a flat tube, put on new pedals purchased from a departing rider. My existing were clips in each side. Great for bitumen. Purchased clip in on one side, flat on the other, meaning I can clip out on loose surface and ride on the flat side. This will enable me to more easily use my foot if balance on loose surface is require. Don't know why I didn't think to bring my similar pedals from home-$10 so a bargain. We depart in the morning for a ride of about 120 Kms I think. Shouldn't be too bad if wind is kind! Well rested as I think others are. Hopefully Friday's sadness will keep ... read more

KASHGAR SUNDAY 6.7.14 Weather: fine, hot. Went with others to the famed Sunday animal market, really a livestock market, for the sale of sheep, goats and cattle. A dusty, busy market, bustling with animals, motorcycle utilities carting a few sheep or goats and trucks carting bulls. Have seen goats and sheep in paddocks but no cattle, so don't know from how far they have travelled. The land here doesn't grow grass, so they must either be hand fed or come from a distance. The sheep are quite tall and large and are of a different variety to any I have seen before. They have large protruding bums, like baboons, but are wool covered. Must be where they store fat for the hard days or weather. Pity my camera battery was flat!! The sheep / goats are trussed ... read more

KUQA to SALT CAMP. WEDNESDAY 2.7.14 Distance: 148 Kms SubT. 4,438. Kms Bal 7976 Kms Road Condition: GOOD , GREAT TAIL WIND Weather: hot by mid morning. 45C at camp Time in Saddle: 5.5 hrs Av Speed: av. 28 kph. Elevation: 200 m : Decent 50 M Calories burned : 5000 Left hotel at 7am. Had an excellent tail wind all day which made riding easier. At 11 am only had 12 Kms to go, however, TL was having a hard time finding a suitably discreet camping ground, to hide from police hassle. So we all sat at large garage for 2hrs drinking soft drinks waiting. Apparently the police are more demanding this trip than previously due to the restive nature of Xinjiang province. This is one of China's largest provinces. It would like to join ... read more

Now I am some what expert at the change of tubes. Have 1 original left!!! Stopped at every service station for cold drinks. None to be had, all were room temperature. Never consumed so much Pepsi, however the sugar content does provide a short term energy boost. Luckily I have a dental appointment pre arranged at tour end. Finally found the obscure camping site, well hidden and avoided the police ... read more

KUQA : REST DAY. TUESDAY 1.7.14. weather: clear sky, hot high 30s. This is a sleepy place, probably due to heat. Main streets are tree lined which provide shade and atmosphere. The small shops sell everything. Most are similar, so I don't know how they all make a living. Found a large mall. A few shoppers, but not overwhelming. Like home, the financial metrics of successful retailing are a mystery to me. The Main Street is more commercial, lacks trees and is hot. I imagine winter here would be the opposite end of the temperature spectrum. Ate lunch which was a good start, more meat skewers and bread. Ate with Phil, he had a thick noodle dish with hot red veg and some meat. Looked ok, so will go back there this evening for a meal. ... read more

TURPAN : WEDNESDAY 25.6.14. REST DAY. ( apologies if this first comment previously posted. Cannot recall!!) Western China has its own local time zone as well as Beijing time. Local time is 2 hours behind Beijing time. More confusing than Queensland Summer/ daylight saving time. TDA is working on Beijing time. Apparently the provided breakfast was beyond description in a negative way, so passed, and went to John's Place for a slow delivered meal of pancake and yogurt, mushroom omelette, banana smoothie. It sounds better than it was! Afterwards a few of us hired a van and went to the local winery, Chateau Tuoling, not far out of town. Very impressive operation, similar to the larger Barossa Valley wineries, in size and amenity. After viewing the cellar and displays we sampled their white and red wines. ... read more

TURPAN TUESDAY 24 JUNE 14 Distance: 96 Kms SubT. 3,500 Kms Bal 8914 Kms Road Condition: highway. Good Weather: fine, cloudy and moderate wind. Time in Saddle: 4 hrs Av Speed: av. 25 kph. Elevation: 350 m : Decent 750 m Calories burned : 5000 Left our marvellous hotel at 7 am. Room was best on trip. Pity to leave it so early. The ride today was relatively short, good road, reasonable head wind. Today we road below sea level, meaning that the only meaningful direction is up! Within the next 3 weeks we climb to over 4,500 metres. Winding around the streets of TURPAN to the hotel was pleasant. The entrance was along a colonnaded, tiled road, with overhanging vines. Ate lunch at John's Cafe, a chain in DUNHUANG, TURPAN, & KASHGAR. No John in ... read more

Hey everybody! This is my first blog entry, so it is not perfect, photos will follow soon! I am right now still in Kashgar at the extreme west of China, and it seriously doesnt really feel like the good old China back in Nanjing. This is Central Asia in all but name. Turkish population, desert landscape, islamic prayer calls all over the day and dont even try to get your get your Gong Bao Chicken around here! But i am staying at this lovely Hostel just across the street from the main mosque, which offers an amazing rooftop perfectly fit for engaging in late night disussions about the capitalism, happiness and virtue...if you know me well, you will understand I find it hard to leave! The Road to Och in Kirgyztan will be a little bumpy, ... read more

18.6.14 DUNHUANG UPDATE: This afternoon visited the famed sand dunes 6 km out of town. Quite spectacular against the vibrant blue sky. The focal point is the Crescent Lake and Oasis. Quite beautiful. Hami Hami is an agricultural area famous for mellons. They are everywhere this time of year. We got stopped by the police again so they could check our passports and take pictures of our bikes. I followed my GPS down a non street, through an underpass populated by scooters, along some skinny streets, and finally got to the hotel. I had the biggest moped in town. I barely fit between the barriers. We ate at a local hole in the wall, had a great meal, met a bunch of locals, and got free beer from the restaurant owner. Everyone was happy.... read more
