Went to Qingdao for a weekend trip to see some ocean and get away from the smog and bustle of Dongying. The weather turned out to be pretty nice. Qingdao is famous for its beer and beaches, the former coming by the plastic bagful if you are so inclined. No comments in this one, just pictures! Enjoy!... read more

Though it just like dreaming,my friend who hasn’t seen for many show up again!Ha ha.Though Portia just spent 2days in Qingdao,we had a lot of wonderful time!I felt uncertain and unconfident when I roaming in Qingdao 3years ago, because I am a totally stranger to this city, but now my Australian friends who I met in Dali is walking with me.I think they won’t feel uncertain like I did three years ago. This Catholic church is called St.Michael’s Cathedral, which was desinghed by a German architect Pipieruch in a Gothic and Roman style. This building is occupying a land area of 1,900sg.m.The design of the church forms a cross.Between the two symmetrical towers and in the 30 meters high,a terrace was built. There are four big bronze bells in the towers, whose voices are melodious and conxrete.the top of the church is ... read more

We finally set out on our travels to Japan on 9th after having packed up house in Tai’an and sent everything we didn’t need for travelling on to Nanjing. (This involved quite an involved and baroque session at the Post Office, and we are hugely grateful to Emma, Jack and Gene for their interpretation and help with sewing up the postbags.) We waved goodbye to everyone, were advised by all our students one last time to wrap up warm so as not to catch cold, Emma gave Amy a pack of tissues for the journey, and off we went. Our first night was spent in Qingdao, A seaside town about 3 hrs by express train west of Tai’an. This was the first time we had taken an express rather than a normal train and the difference ... read more

Three years !!! Even though I have been in ,a coastal city,Qingdao three years.I haven't been so happy &excited!I have never found so much fun in the sea. I am from southwest China ,my hometown is wedged between Mt.Cangshan and Erhai lake (a fresh water lake,2000 ).I had not saw the sea until I attempted my university in Qingdao 3years ago . when I was 19years old,I saw the sea for the first time in my life .I will never forget how excited I was to see the real sea !Last week when the 11surfers (Todd,David,Simon,Lindsey,Tammy,James,Chirstina,Jess,Marion,Moira&Nora)from California come Qingdao to teach ,Chinese students,us to surf.Which recall me how excited I was three years ago. Thanks for Todd,David,Simon,Lindsey,Tammy ,James,Chirstina,Jess,Marion,Moira&Nora for teaching us surfing this week. They are very nice person. All of they have take their surfborad ... read more

I can hardly believe that I have got the chance to surf again! Still in the Old stoneman beach in Qingdao. Those friends from California also come to teach us today! It's really exciting to do so,after that day's surf I think I have almost made it ,to stand on the surf broad with my two feet! The waves are stronger than yesterday's,so I didn't need to paddle very much .I can feel the water pushing me ,and I try my best to stood on it as soon as possible.Once I stood on it I felt that I can almost control it ,and I can keep my balance by my two feet! And then I can surf further and further .What's more I never fall into the water! It's just a little pity that ,the wave is ... read more

Wow!It's my fist time surfing in my life!Yesterday 11 surfers from California come to Qingdao to teach Chinese students surf .I have watched surf on television for hundred times ,but I have never tried before .So it's such a surprise when an American told me about this one day before. I met all the American surfers at their hotel this morning and then led they to the coach which took us to the old stoneman beach ,where we have surfed there for a whole day. It's a lovely day ,and the wind is just right for surfing. After everything got ready ,Gearhart told me "Alex go first " and then I put on a suit with long leg and short arm ,borrowed from David. James ,Sherman jumped into the sea fellowed by me .They tried a body ... read more

Holiday week falls disconcertingly early. We were just getting settled in, our first year students had just finished their mandatory two-week military training (seems to consists mostly of learning the basics of marching, popular military songs, and a little camping on the side) and had had their first week of actual classes, and then there's a holiday and it all stops for a week. Odd. So we went to Qingdao. Qingdao is a seaside city about 6 hours' train journey from Tai'an- quite a few of our students come from there. In fact, I did a quick poll of two of my classes and the students mostly come from Tai'an, Jinan, Liyi and Qingdao (or small places in the area around these), which means they're all from the same province of Shandong. The Shandong students say ... read more
