Another foggy day in Qingdao. I really need to look up what they did when the sailing was here at the Olympics - the cloud/smog cover is so thick that I find it very difficult to believe anyone would have been able to see anything.... I think I am getting a cold today - not good times. Of course, it might just be delayed jet lag but I'm dosing up to try and fight whatever it is off. I'm flying back to Tarik's in Tonglu tomorrow and they won't let me on the plane if I am displaying any signs of a cold. Yesterday was a tough day (!) I got a facial and then a head massage. The facial lasted an hour and a half and while the mask was setting on my face she ... read more

What a whirlwind couple of days. I got a call on Thursday to say that my aunt and uncle were visiting my other uncle in Qingdao so booked a same day flight to visit. Sadru mama lives in Qingdao but is going on holiday on Sunday so I really had to get my skates on. I was worried about the flight becuase I seem to rememberthe domestic flights being a little bit bumpy last time I was here, but it was okay. It seems obvious to say this, but the biggest difference between here and the UK is the people and the attitudes. I was sitting in the aisle and as soon as the plane touched down everybody else jumped up. The aisle was filled with people so I just sat and waited for the doors ... read more

I decided to go to Qingdao by hitch as I known that Gu Yue and Liu Chang's trip, which is hitch form Beijing to Berlin.I pucked up and borrowed 400yuan from Kun,then I began. DAY 1: At begining,I took the route 9 bus to the highway's entrance of Xi'an.I hoped I could catch a car to arrive in Zhengzhou in the first day. After 1.5 hours,I found it was too hard to hitch a car in the entrance, although there is a yard not far away.No one stoped. So I changed my plan and I took a taxi to the nearest gas station among the highway. There were several trucks in it and I asked an old man to look after my pack when I was asking drivers wheteher they could take me to Zhengzhou today.Luckly, when I asked the third ... read more

Qingdao/TsingTao Our first stop is Qingdao (青岛; 青島; QīngDǎo; TsingTao), easily one of the most beautiful cities we have seen in China. Old town has a strong European influence from the Germans (hence the beer) and it reminds us both of southern California, around the Laguna Beach area, or even a little like Carmel by the Sea as the multitude of beaches are littered with high rocky hillsides, huge boulders and craggy shoreline. The weather is also beach-like; it's hazy in the morning, warms up nicely in the afternoon to dripping sweat temps, and then cools down in the evening so walks are enjoyable. I can see why this is one of the most popular holiday resort areas in all of China. But the beaches themselves, are, well, these aren't beaches like we are used to, ... read more

Sunday 26th July 2009 train to Qingdao We boarded the train to Qingdao at 7.30am, its always a surprise what kind of train you end up on and in what seats, even where it is going in China since you just go up to the counter with a sheet of paper and hope that whoever wrote it for you isn’t ripping the piss and sending you on a hard sleeper to Mongolia. Because if they ask you any questions all you can do is shout, Qingdao or something at them wherever it is you want to go. We were expecting a hard sleeper like before, but this was a much newer train, quiet like the trains at home almost and seemed to be all normal seats, bit of a pain when the journey is 10 hours ... read more

Blog #8: July 7th - 14th: Shanghai, Qingdao and on being a victim of crime. Well dear readers...where have we got to? I left you in an internet cafe in Shanghai...so from there I will pick up my story. Tuesday 7th I cooked a meal for the 4 of us to say thanks for letting me stay at your flat. As I only had a 2 burner gas stove, the inside of a rice cooker and the smallest frying and saucepan in the world, I did quite well to muster up lime and garlic prawns with a kiwi fruit and lettuce salad followed by sweet and sour pork noodles. We all dived in, it all got eaten, thats the end of that story. Wednesday 8th, I got up early and went into Shanghai...its so ridiculously hot, ... read more

This weekend was the best! I went traveling with my room mate (Demi), and two other guys from our program (Sam and Sheldon). They were really great! Every one was so laid back and down to earth; it was a huge relief. Our first stop was Taishan mountain in Shandong province. As the legend goes, in ancient times there lived a man who kept growing and growing and growing. Eventually after some thousands of years he died from exhaustion and fell to the earth. His arms, legs and head formed five mountains of which Taishan. The mountain formed from his head is the holiest mountain in Daoist thought. It was believed that the heavens would reject any one found to be unfit from ascending the mountain, so before assuming the throne, the emperor would have to ... read more

We boarded our, space ship like, bullet train from Beijing to Qingdao (complete with blood stains on front from an unsuspecting railway crossing mammal of some description). If we were to take the Lonely Planet literally, which we did, we would have expected a quaint little seaside retreat which has been described as 'China's Switerzland'. We had pictured Qingdao, a former German settlement, as a little seaside town but, to our surpise, it is a bustling city with a population of Belfast and Dublin combined. We are now starting appreciate the shear scale of China and understand that nowhere in China is small. To give you an idea of the size of China, its population is about the same as Europe, North America and South America combined. We arrived to a busy seaside city but was ... read more
