Well, maybe Chinese beer culture anyways. We had a fun, relaxing time in Qingdao. We took a bit of a photo break here and focused more on what this city is known for...BEER. Home to China's most popular beer, Tsingtao. We skipped the museum tour and opted to head straight to Beer street instead. Here we tasted a couple different flavours including a really good stout. We only spent 2 days here, but one of those days was spent searching for a non-existent Thai restaurant (looking for something different). We settled for Vietnamese instead.... read more

Qingdao We were going to the seaside city of Qingdao, which I had read about several months before coming to China. I had originally thought my university was in Qingdao, but I discovered that I would be living about 192 miles away. I'm not completely disappointed though, because Ji'nan isn't as westernized as Qingdao. We purchased our tickets and the night before got hammered--which is not uncommon for the French or the Dutch--and prepared for our morning commute to Qingdao by fast train. This was simple, easy, fast, clean, and efficient. The boarding process was hassle free, the seats were decently comfortable (I mean, you're in China. At this point you're taking what you can get.), and most of us slept. We slept hard too. Being hungover and realizing you're going to be late for your ... read more

I arrived early in the morning due to the train taking 18 hours when I thought I would arrive in 10 hours. The hostel I booked was not near the train station and far east towards the financial district. I showed my Chinese address to the taxi drivers and three of them had no idea where the street even was. I showed them a map of the city with a dot that showed where the hostel was, still no luck. I did not see any bus stands or signs near the train station. I decided that I would walk to another hostel that was in the Lonely Planet and see if they had any rooms that didn't show on the Internet or see if they could get me a taxi that would work. As I was ... read more

As you well know, I had this past weekend off due to the Dragon Boat festival. That means I could lie down, relax, and take the weight of my traumatized and bandaged left foot, right? NO. Instead, I resolved to go traipsing around Shandong province all weekend. Although my foot was aching and throbbing and bleeding and festering the whole time, I got on the bus and headed up Qingdao. It was not that remarkable an adventure. Here's some stuff about Qingdao: First, Qingdao is a coastal city in Shandong province and is one of the 10 largest cities in China. It used to be a German colony, or had some type of German patronage over it. As a consequence, they make beer. The brand is famous throughout Asia, and is called "Tsingtao". I hate beer, ... read more

Qingdao is a smaller seaside city of 2 Million inhabitants on the N.E. sea-coast of Shandong Province, China. At the end of the 19th Century, an ambitious Germany was looking for a place in China to continue its colonial expansion. That moment arrived, when the Chinese Boxer Rebels killed two German Catholic priests in 1897. German troops were sent in to establish their presence in Qingdao, and the Chinese were compelled into a forced agreement to lease the surrounding Bay of Jiaozhou to Germany. Before the first frigate arrived in the bay, Qingdao had been a quiet fishing village. But soon, German officers, sailors and traders were promenading up and down the "Kaiser Wilhelm Ufer". They dined in the luxurious, seafront "Prinz Heinrich Hotel" and drank beer from the "Germania Brewery", which later became known as ... read more

Nestled into the hills and sitting on the coast of the Yellow Sea, Qingdao offers wonderful reprieve from China’s polluted urban interior. Home to China’s 2008 Olympic sailing events, at least one generation of Germans (they caught whiff of subtle hints and left post-haste during the Revolution), and China-famous Tsingtao beer, Qingdao made for an excellent sensory recharge before plunging into the final six weeks of our work here in China. At the turn of the past nineteenth century China sat ripe for the plundering by outside interests as internal power struggles slowly weakened imperial rule. Thanks to Lonely Planet we learned that in 1898 German forces got busy in taking over the exceptionally ideal harbor and after the murder of two German missionaries, and a bit of military huffing and puffing, the harbor town was ... read more

Every year i, with guys in my class would go outing in the spring for fun.We decided to go climbing Mount Lao. Mount Lao is famous to tourists home and abroad. There are two two views. Yangkou is a better one bcz you can even see the blue sea on it,which is attractive. We started out early in the morning. After forty minutes by bus ,we reached the foot of the mountain. In order to evade the tickets,we gave up the main entrance and were led by the locals up to the mountain. Through the main gate, you are requested to buy the ticket and climb the mountain on the regular path.Of course, the price of evading ticket is the steep and grassy path which took more energy. The guide told us to keep quiet on the way or ... read more

Again we had three days off every year at this time ,the Tomb-sweeping Day.On the first day i did nothing but stay in my dorm sitting beside the laptop, browsing the internet sites over and over.I would definitely feel fed up with this kind of life.On the second day,two friends of mine ,with me together went to a indoor theme park enjoying ourselves a lot in the funny games like the pirates ship. We sat at the end of the ship. The ship goes up and down as if you were in a hammock being pushed back and forth. When it goes to the highest point,it stops for one or two seconds, you would feel nervous and scared and hold your breathe, then it goes down, the other end goes to the top,we nearly touches the ground ,then you scream ... read more
