Written and posted later Last night, one of my roommates was really sick. Evidently it was pretty serious because she and her boyfriend went to the hospital. It was 3:00 AM. I took the bus to the train station and got there right before they opened the gate for people to get on the train. I was at a table with two chairs on one side and three on the other. The two chairs were occupied by two female college students who were a bit older than me. The other two seats on my side were filled by three guys a little older than that. The guys bought two interesting key chains—sturdy little plastic bags with a small fish and a little plastic ball inside. They hung right behind my head on the curtain hook for ... read more

This afternoon I went to the Beer Fest. Or the Qingdao International Beer Festival, if you want to be specific. It was quite a spectacle. Some highlights were the Chinese woman singing the “lonely goatherd” song and two men juggling hats and catching them on their heads, etc. There was a certain brand of chuanr being sold where all the guys selling it were dancing to music blaring from speakers at their stalls. Some were more into it than others. There was one guy in particular, who also had a whistle in his mouth who was enthusiastically dancing every time I walked past. There were lots of festival type rides in one section. Different brands of beer had different tents set up in another area, usually with a stage and a singer. It seemed like most ... read more

This entry was posted later because the wireless was down last night There’s an elderly woman who has a morning routine of walking around in the park around the hostel and warming up her vocal cords. She does this by screeching/yelling repeatedly at the top of her lungs. I wonder how/why she decided she ought to do that. Maybe it’s an old family secret. Maybe it’s what she considers to be the reason for her good health. Maybe it just feels good. Maybe all of the above, or something entirely different. The highlight of today was swimming. There were some pretty good waves, and I only got a little sunburn. I also bought some Laoshan green tea. This is the kind of tea that’s unique to this area because it grows near Laoshan, which is a ... read more

Today I checked out some shops geared toward souvenir-hunting tourists and was largely disappointed. The highlight of today was visiting Number Six Bathing Beach as the sun was setting. I took some pictures there, focusing on the Huilan Pavilion, which appears on Tsingtao Beer’s label. My two-night streak of having the dorm to myself is broken. Three guys moved in this afternoon. I never mentioned this, but my hostel is pretty much located in the middle of a park. It’s very picturesque. Today I sat out at a little table in a wooded area long enough to find out that there’s plenty of ferocious mosquitoes in these parts.... read more

Today I went to see the beer factory. I also went in search of tea. In the evening, I visited various street markets. My favorite street market seems to be open all day. There’s lots of food for sale there, and it smells really good. The night markets seem to have an overabundance of underwear. But there’s also plastic trinkets galore, and other miscellaneous stuff. There’s always bowls of sea creatures in water. I don’t know which is livelier—the spitting clams or the prawns crawling all over each other. I also wondered on a very rocky beach where a lot of people were looking for shells. During my evening wandering, I found myself back near the beer factory, and there were all sorts of acts going on—mostly singing, but I also saw some fan dancing. There ... read more

Today I walked along the Seaside Sightseeing Pathway, until just past Number One Bathing Beach. I made a stop in Lu Xun Park, which was cool. It even had a sculpture of him. I also got to admire the Xiao Qingdao Lighthouse. It has that name because it’s on little (xiao) island (dao). Qingdao can be translated as “green island,” by the way. Qing can also mean blue or black. I also saw a lot of things for sale that were made out of seashells. Or just polished shells. Not to mention ice cream and cold drinks. I also stopped to play on some rocks for a while. There were a bunch of weird bugs crawling around on the rocks, which were fun to watch. This evening I found a store with a lot of things ... read more

Today I walked around and got a feel for the city. Another observation about Qingdao is that there are a lot more big dogs than in Beijing. There’s a tiny kitten that seems to wander around this hostel though. I got my train ticket to Guangzhou. Should be interesting—all they had left at the travel agency and train station were hard seats. It’s about a 28 hour journey. Hopefully getting from Guangzhou to Hong Kong will be relatively painless. Arranging train tickets is one of the most stressful things about traveling in China as far as I’m concerned. On the one hand, China is very well-connected by rail. If the US could figure out cross-country transportation half as well, it would make life a lot easier. On the other, there’s a whole lot of people who ... read more

The train ride to Qingdao was rather uneventful, aside from being impressed by the whole bullet train thing. Hard seat class was like being on an airplane, right down to the airsickness bags they passed out. They also passed out small bottles of water. The seats were adjustable (backs reclined and seats could move forward or back). There was lots of legroom and fold down tables. There were a handful of stops, the first being at Tianjin West Station, which was exactly an hour after departure. The sign that we were greeted with as we pulled into the station at Qingdao referenced the Olympics. The touts around the station spoke to me in Chinese. A refreshing change, but I already had reservations at a hotel. At the hostel, they started to tell me that the fee ... read more

As the school year comes to an end, our traveling adventures and my blog entries will once again begin. I look back at the year and wonder to myself where has the time gone? Where ever it may have gone, it won't be coming back which means we can only look forward to the future which, Knock on Wood, will hopefully be a bright future. This past month there has been alot of "goodbye's" said to friends as well to relatives. More goodbye's than anyone would prefer but every new city visited is a reminder of how small the world is. ( I'm too lazy to write the whole story so insert "inside story" here) Just trust me, it's a small world. Haha. Sadly, Brittany and I had to say goodbye to Alex and Veronica as ... read more

On Monday, June 18th, I went to the seaside city of Qingdao for a few days with my friends Jen and Claire. What started as a lovely getaway to the sea ended up a bit of a disaster. I'll start at the beginning. The train ride to Qingdao is only 2.5 hours, we chatted and slept along the way. The train station in Qingdao is near the water, in a prime location. Unfortunately, it's being entirely rebuilt since Qingdao is hosting the sailing races in the 2008 Olympics. So, the train takes you to Sifang, a suburb of Qingdao. When we got off the train, there were people trying to sell us maps and hotel rooms - they can spot a foreigner a mile away! We bought a map and some popsicles and then we took ... read more
