Happy New Year everyone! Ok, so Christmas and New Year's has come and gone, both in their special way. I certainly didn't spend them in a traditional way, but they also weren't spent angsting over what I couldn't do or who I couldn't see. For Christmas, I actually spent that day and the days before struggling though various blackouts of electricity and, of course, no water. Having no power sucks. Having no power when it's almost freezing out sucks even more. Thankfully on Christmas Eve I was blessed to have a wonderful party to attend which got me out of my apartment from 7pm to 1am. A friend of mine, Esmeralda, had been planning this party since the beginning of the month and it definitely showed. I had helped a little bit with decorating her apartment, ... read more

Obviously I knew it would come eventually, but to have it only a few days away makes it so much more real. Of course I think the same thing happens to me every year so it really shouldn't be surprising. : ) I'm still doing most of the normal Christmasy things thankfully. There will be gift exchanges, parties, and of course being with friends (though sadly no family). I'm just grateful there's so many foreigners over here to make up such a good group of people. Shopping for me isn't fun at the best of times, but shopping in China is ten times worse. Not just because of the language barrier, but also because to get to one of the better places to shop you have to travel over an hour by bus and carry you ... read more

I finally got to hang out with my students today! They've invited me out before "to play", but I've usually been busy with volunteer work or travelling. So today we took a short trip out to the nearby mountains to go hiking. I wasn't sure what to expect since most of my students English is mid level at best, but all of them tried to include me in conversations or whatever activity we were currently doing. What really impacted me though was their level of giving. I've heard about it from other teachers and foreigners, but this is the first time I've experienced it to such extremes. First it was the food. My students kept trying to give me food from when they first saw me in the morning all the way up to when we ... read more

So I'm now dutifully repentant. : ) Thank you Jen! My last blog entry was written on one of those days which had been prefaced by one of those weeks. Nothing horrible happened, just an accumulation of frustrations, emotions, and problems building up till I just wanted to hide under the covers for a while. So thankfully that's passed and I've moved on to bigger and better things. Like Christmas parties!!! Today was an incredibly long, but good day. We had a Christmas party a "nearby" orphanage. The kids had a great time eating, playing and doing a variety of crafts with all the many volunteers. The only down side was how far the place was away from Nanchang. It took us a good 3 1/2 hours there and back and we only got to spend ... read more

Sorry it's been so long since my last post! I thought I had lost internet, but it may have been just me not knowing what buttons to push. Happens all the time. : ) Anyway, this weekend was pretty cool. On Saturday I got to help out for the first time with Nanchang Cares 4 Kids and visit some children at a deaf school. The kids were super cute and pretty normal. They were all outfitted with a hearing aid, but they all laughed played and pouted just like any other child I've seen. We came bearing crafts that had stickers which led to hours of amusement and no end to the messes and sticker covered faces. My completely OCD mind wanted to stick to the boundaries of the crafts, but I let the little girl ... read more

Not much to report, but I did want to show off some pictures I took. On Wed, I walked to school that's down the road a bit to take some pictures. The school teaches metal working and they have these enourmous statues all over their campus. I was actually afraid to go in at first because it didn't seem like a place you could just wander around, but a took a chance and approached the gate to pop in for a bit. The gaurds were pretty confused as to why I was there, but I showed them my camera and made motions of taking pictures. They still didn't seem like they knew what I wanted, but I just wandered around within sight of them and then thanked them on the way out. Also, on one of ... read more

OK, so it's been an interesting couple of weekends. Last weekend the Cherians, plus some of their friends plus me all went to Lushan Mountain. I wasn't sure what to expect but was just told it'd be about 180 RMB to get in and then up the mountain. So we left early Saturday morning (7:30 >_ When we first got there the mountains honestly didn't look that impressive. Then we got closer. I've seen lots of mountains in lots of different countries and these could defnitely compete. They were large and made even more beautiful with the fog that had settled over most everything. It took us a bit to get sorted out because Pravine wanted to use our bus but it turned out it was a few seats too big. We had to take a ... read more

So I've almost been here a total of 4 weeks come this Saturday. It certainly doesn't feel like it. When I first got here I felt like time would never go by quickly. Everthing seemed to slow down and take forever, but now that I have a routine it feels like next year will be here before I know it. Right now I'm planning for Halloween though I don't think it'll be anything spectacular. I just want to give my students a taste of what we do and maybe show a movie during English corner the Thursday before. For Thanksgiving I'm not sure what we'll be doing. I don't think any time is given off, but I think the Cherians might celebrate and I'm sure I'll get to crash whatever they're doing. : ) So I ... read more

So there's a desert in Nanchang apparently... It's not very big and it's mostly man-made, but it was pretty fun to go to. Mostly funny, but fun in it's own way. It took a while to get to. Not because it's far, but because the roads there were almost one-way streets and in about ten different spots there were hold-ups that completely stopped traffic going both ways. The scenery leading up to the desert was confusing because it was mostly moist areas like rice fields. When we got closer there were pine trees and finally we got to the "desert" which pretty much just looked like a big sand based theme park. There were dune buggy rides, four wheeler rides, horse rides, camel rides, donkey rides, sledding down the sand hills and zip-lining which involved a ... read more
