6:15 am - time to head to exercise class with the students - or military marching and formation if the campus "ROTC" (don't know if they really are "ROTC" or actual military or what - some are pretty young - but they do have a military training program of some sort on campus) shows up again this week. Gray bleak rain settles around me as I leave the hotel - wait SILENCE! There is no music blaring from the building around the corner this morning, so the music doesn't play all the time. Someone turns it off - so only gray and the quiet sound of rains this morning. I head across campus in the slow drizzle - reminiscent of a spring day in Washington. Thankfully the gray rain has made the temperature tolerable. Jogging to ... read more

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun, but the joy and the song like the seasons has all gone . . . . the melachonly tune wafts across campus on the warm summer's night air. As she wanders closer to the origin of the music the sound becomes a blare! She wanders across the NIT campus with a smile on her face after her evening shopping spree at the All Home Mart grocery store. Ahhhh the complexity and diversity (or perhaps the word should be oddities of China). The Mercedes and the Beamers and the Audis that frequent this very road along with the electric bikes and the recycler pulling his rickshaw type wagon, the "ROTC" students doing drill and practice, and the few college students on campus. The same rode ... read more

July 10, 2012 ABSURD! That's what it was . . . . As I stand somewhat hiding behind the clothesline with my western clothing hanging there people walk by as if it is normal . . . normal for some white woman to b hanging her clothing out on a pink clothesline on purple hangers in the middle of a college campus in Nanchang, China. Yet white women must hang out their clothes all the time across the street from their hotel on the side of some other non-descript tall building. At dusk no less! So different from out western culture where people would have been staring and daresay some business owner would have come out to chase me away or maybe even call the police. Yet 6 days later the clothes line still hangs there ... read more

Sunday, July 8th So the day closes and tomorrow starts classes - what a day! Breakfast was about 8 an and then we were in our classrooms by 9am cleaning and arranging (after we spent a good 15-20 minutes lost in the wrong building - we felt better later when we found out Steve Ray- director of chinaconnect in the US - and David Du - director of chinaconnect in China - did the same thing and NEVER found our classrooms!). Then from there we went to the tech building to use the computers to prepare for classes. We ended up missing lunch - ended up with junk food from the local grocery store and I purchased a shower curtain while there too! Oh the little comforts from home you don't think about until you don't ... read more

The campus is large and fairly new. It is across the river from the acutal city of Nanchang. We are going into Nanchang soon to tour about, visit Steve and Deb Holm, and to eat REAL pizza. We are told there is a Chinese woman in Nanchang that used to work for the Pizza Hut. She decided to quit and open her own place. She stole Pizza Hut's recipes when she left and supposedly makes VERY good pizza - we shall see. Also Steve told us Deb is making brownies! I hope it is true - I LOVE BROWNIES. So I must keep this short - more about the campus when I have more time. Linda... read more

Watch for many more pictures - hopefully tonight. Day started at 5am. Took a group of 31 students walking/running at 6:45 this morning for about 30 minutes. Tonight we will go running at 7pm for about an hour - if we don't all melt. The heat is BLAZING - there is a wind but some times it is just stirring the heat. We had all our students together today. This morning for the usual Chinese opening ceremoy and then for introductions and activities. WE have 49 students from age 8 to 26 - quite the age range! So from grade 4 to one that has finished college. Some with almost no English and several that have studied at language schools. It should be a fun, challenging and VERY interesting 3 weeks! Class starts soon so I ... read more
