Geo: 32.05, 118.78 The Ford Family FUN Day is a day that all the Ford workers can bring their families to work and show them just how much fun the work place is.There where so many activities to take part in. There where even dances on the stage for the Korean "Gangnam Style" song.It was starting to get colder so we all danced along with them. Then there where a series of very long and important speeches. Then the fun could begin.Things to make, eat, play, watch, learn. It was a fun day just like it said in the title. It’s been quite a while since our last blog… there’s a few things we’ll post in the coming days, but first a recap of the weekend before last. Along with or two friends Nate and David (a few newcomers to Changzhou!), we headed to our neighboring city to the West, Zhenjiang镇江 as we’ve been here for over eight months and never managed to get over there. All I knew about it was that it was about half the size of Changzhou and situated right on the Yangtze and was the former home of American writer Pearl Buck. I didn’t have terribly high expectations of our short day trip, but it was actually pretty cool! The first thing we did was leave catch the bullet train to the city. The ride took about 30 minutes. Once we ... read more

A great sleep last night in the biggest bed I’ve ever slept in. So lovely to wake up and look out over the city. A bit of rain today. The first we’ve had on our China trip. Not to worry. Off to our agent visits by 9.00am. First stop is the EIC agency. The counselors send quite a few students to Australian schools but mostly to Balwyn and Glen Waverley because families in China have relatives who live in these areas. It’s understandable that parents would want to send their students overseas to stay with family. Most of the students who come into the office want to study in America, so we spent some time outlining the positives of choosing Australia for a study experience. The counselors looked quite tired and bored even for so early ... read more

So what can I tell you about life in China? Firstly the traffic. Imagine driving across the city of Melbourne at 6.00pm on a Friday night. Now add in a couple of hundred cyclists and scooters and take away all of the usual road rules. This is what traffic is like in China and it gets worse during peak hour. The easiest and cheapest way to travel is by taxi but hailing one can be a challenge, especially in the morning and evening when the locals are travelling to and from work. I have learnt to enjoy travelling up front in the taxi. It’s a bit like a tuk tuk ride with the extra protection from the car body. The taxi drivers have been generally very honest, even though I’m sure one took a bit of ... read more

So, after the hunt for the hotel we awoke in Suzhou with the knowledge we only really have 2 days here. After a chinese breakfast of noodles, steamed buns, and even the little lady in the kitchen cooking me a fried egg as i am a foreigner!bless her, she was so chuffed with herself, we set off for a day at Tongli watertown. A taxi tgo the train/coach station then a 1 hour "bus" journey to Tongli was undertaken. The "bus driver" had obviously gained his licence from the "Speed" movies, now we have been on buses in Thailand, in Vietnam, on mountain roads in Malaysia but never ever have i actually gripped the seat, closed my eyes and promised god anything he wants if he got me off this vehicle alive. It seems the horn here ... read more

Eli ... read more

17November 2009 I landed in Shanghai Pudong International airport, my Indian friends studying in Jiangsu received me and gave me two choices, go to the city either by Maglev or airport bus. I chose Maglev as I have never travelled in anything that’s faster than 140km/hour. Maglev station was in the airport complex with a sign board showing “33km in 8mins”, we bought the tickets 80RMB per person for single journey( airport bus was just 22RMB) and entered the train which was guarded by two tall Chinese officers. It was not quite a journey as the train reached the destination in just 8mins with a top speed of 484km/hr passing through the suburbs of shanghai filled with flyovers and broad roads. Longyang station was the final point for the maglev from where we had to take ... read more

New photos on: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/draftwrite/ Using a few photos from the new phone. Not great quality but I sometimes snap things I'd miss with the SLR, like the new beer in the first picture or the sunset when I don't have the "real" camera with me. …..Xiao Wei delivered a baby daughter, 3.4kg. It must have been a great relief as she looked ready to deliver about 3 months ago. As Chinese people are concerned about the quality of the powdered milk from local suppliers where possible they prefer to use imported products. As a paediatrician she has done her research & luckily the nationality of the chosen product is that of my Dutch friend, Klass. who enlists some friends to order & send some. It arrives from Holland almost on time so I take it to ... read more
