Suzhou is a small city called the "Venice of the East" by tourist guides, so we had imagined a gentle, peaceful place, forgetting of course that in China a "small" city is still huge by European standards, in this case ten and a half million people. We took a boat trip through the canals, but although it is pretty, with pagodas and traditional homes, there are plenty of visible signs of industry and of the huge population, as we passed under concrete flyovers and past Soviet-style apartment blocks. The heat in Suzhou took some getting used to: by the afternoon it was in the high 30s, and we began to relish walking down the shopping streets, because every time we passed an open shop we would feel a blast of the cook air-conditioning.... read more

Rainy days in Suzhou... I had been looking forward to our Suzhou trip for a number of weeks and checked the weather frequently. Therefore, I was quite surprised to find that the forecast had changed dramatically in the hours before our departure; moving from a mere 20% chance of showers to a torrential 100% Still, we’d booked our train ticket in advance and decided to go make the best of it. The ride to Suzhou was my first experience on one of China’s newer trains. During past trips we had bumped around on the older variety, which, though efficient, consisted of a mad dash for hard plastic seats and the occasional cockroach sitting. This new train was a marvel: sleek, fast, and clean. The broad aisles and bullet-shaped nose made it look like an airplane without ... read more

New photos on: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/draftwrite/ …..for someone brought up in the UK one thing that is impossible to get used to in China is the queue bomber. Not all Chinese people do it & Chinese friends tell me they don't like it, although they don't always say anything. Stainless steel rails are erected in every bus & train station in every major city in China to direct those waiting for tickets to the right. After buying their tickets they exit left. Except for the queue bombers, who occasionally, brazenly, enter left &, as though you don't exist, thrust their money through the hatch while loudly requesting their ticket. I am waiting patiently behind a petite lady when, just as she receives her ticket, 2 men & a woman block her exit & do just what I described. ... read more

It occurred to me that two days left isn’t enough. Not enough time left to do all the things I haven’t done yet and all the things I don’t know that I haven’t done and are still left for me to find - but two days is it. So, I sit on the roof of my kitchen and write a list and I figure a route to best cover as many things on the list taking the most efficient route but I’m always awake before the train ticket shop is open, or the calligrapher opens his windows, or The Bookworm is open and my tummy is rumbling through not eating breakfast. It is 6.30am and, in some parts, this city has already been fully awake for 2 hours. So, I figure I’ll start the day by ... read more

Please don't think that I only see and write about bad things - I don't. I've lived in this city for about 2 years in all over a period of 5 years and know it very well. I don't write about regular things like the shops or Jade, or dresses or Chinese umbrellas or any other things to buy or eat or do because I don't see those things as important and actually, I hardly see those things at all because I'm used to them. I write about the things that make me stop and feel. Here are some real things of beauty. In a small room at the ‘Innovation Center for disabled persons of Suzhou’, facing Ping Jiang Lu, the child has come for her one hour calligraphy lesson. She is seven years old and ... read more

Gui (龟) I'm at the hostel with my feet in a bowl of water. I'm exhausted – I thought it would be a normal day – it’s only 10.30am. Zao Shang, I kept my promise with the ladies in the park and went to play shuttle cock footy with them before 7am, backed out gracefully through inability to play after about 5 minutes, watched for an hour, then went home, showered, ate, then decided I would go to Ding Hui Zi Xiang and sit in the temple but on the way, whilst crossing Gan Jie at the entrance to Ping Jiang Lu, I saw a man selling a Wu Gui. It’s the third I’ve seen in as many days. All being sold in the streets, all in sad conditions. … I ask him how much he ... read more

I walk down the lane skirting what little shade there is. It’s 10am and already 30 degrees. There’s no getting away from this heat or the people or the noise. I walk over Big Heart Bridge, down the next lane and round the corner, start walking up the old stone bridge by Cai Gen Lin’s house and come face to face with him after 2 and a half years. There was no way of letting him know I was coming, I can’t write hanzi, the post is unreliable especially when I stick a photo of him on the front of the envelope and make a stab at the address and hope it will arrive - I just thought I would turn up. We both stand in silence looking at one another. He’s thinner, taller, older and ... read more

Today we woke up early and headed to the Lingering Gardens, a traditional Chinese Garden. Here we were able to walk through the stone paths through bonzai, lotus lillies and Chinese opera performers. Although the gardens were absolutely beautiful, I think they highlight of the tour was the small group of random Asians that started following me around. A woman and her husband, about 60 years old asked to pose with me in front of the pond. A few minutes later, a group of high schoolers crept up behind me, when I turned around they all shrieked and then asked if I would take pictures with them. I guess I must have been the first (approachable?) white person they've seen...unless their was some inside joke I was missing. At least they didn't call me Lady Gaga ... read more

Europen sanoin, viimeinen lähtölaskenta on alkanut. Lomalla tuli viikon aikana ajeltua noin 570km, mikä on kohtuullinen määrä. Ajaessa tuli nähtyä taas nähtyä kaikenlaista omalaatuisista muuttokuormista mitä ihmeellisempiin liikennevälineisiin. Kiinalaisten mielestä erikoisin tielläliikkuja oli kuitenkin minä, koska eihän täällä ole polkupyöriä ennen nähty. Hienoja hetkiä lomalla oli mennä lautalla Jangtsen yli, ajella keskellä autioita rypsipeltoja, väistellä tienvarsiankkoja ja eksyä Rammsteinin takia. Kyllä, "eksyin" koska kuuntelin Rammste... read more

Loma! Mitä sitä tekisi? No tietysti ajaisi pyörällä joka päivä itsensä kuoliaaksi! Ajomatkaa sinne tuli noin 48km. Toisin kuin Hainanilla, Jiangsun maakunn... read more
