Sammy is coming along in leaps and bounds. He’s putting on weight, his eyes are sparkling, he loves to joke around, he has learned to love water if his Jei Jei joins him, and he’s generally an easy kid. He has incredible patience for a three-year-old, which Kym attributes to his lack of mobility – you have to learn patience when you often can’t move anywhere unaided. He hasn’t (yet) manifested any behaviours relating to the sudden loss of his previous life, so I’m waiting for the hammer to fall, but right now, he’s a surprisingly normal kid. Tooh tooh (spits on fingers superstitiously). ... read more

Sorry for the radio silence. Between the copious paperwork, adventures with three children and terrible internet service, it's been a struggle to blog. I've quickly drafted a few blog posts while the internet is up which I will now upload. I'll only send a link to the last one, so you're not inundated with emails. Read them at your leisure (or don't - no pressure!).... read more

I just want to say a great big thank you to my fantastic friend, Kym, who has been so incredibly supportive to us through what has been a very stressful journey, both physically and emotionally. We couldn't have done it without our amazing guide and mentor.... read more

I travelled via bullet train to Shanghai yesterday to collect Sammy's citizenship certificate and begin his passport application process. I had a bureaucratic problem, which I won't bore you with, but long story short, instead of waiting for Sammy's passport to be issued and then potentially having to travel back to Zhengzhou, the Australian consulate has kindly agreed to issue Sammy with an urgent exit visa, which means we might be home two weeks earlier than planned. I won't count my chickens, but I will keep you posted!... read more

…..I'm guessing Adele didn't write the song Hometown Glory with this country in mind but I'm thinking a lot of it is somehow appropriate; I like it in the city where the air is so thick & opaque, I like to see everybody in short skirts, shorts & shades, I like it in the city where 2 worlds collide, the people & the government, everybody taking different sides …..not many shorts or shades around just yet, as winter hangs on to the end of February, but the rest of it, well … It was raining & almost literally freezing yesterday, & even after the rain stopped it was not a nice night to be going to a gig on the scooter but after waiting about 20 minutes for a taxi I just gave up, put on ... read more

…..sometimes her driver takes her in the Cadillac but on this particular day Zhu Ping was driving it herself. She stopped at the lights & was surprised when a woman on an e-bike hit her car, not hard enough to do any real damage, even more surprised when the woman then flung herself onto the front of the car, as though in a head-on smash & refused to get off until Zhu Ping coughed up ¥500, or about Au$90. Calls to the police revealed a distinct lack of interest &, according to our teacher Mike, her boyfriend, she reluctantly paid up. Stories like this make it more credible, & maybe understandable, those stories about people walking straight past apparently sick or injured people on the road only for fear of being caught in a scam..... …..I've ... read more

…..I am exhausted. I just washed up, a bowl, 2 cups, a fork, a spoon & a lunch box. Doing it balanced on one leg, in the bathroom, (there's no running water supplied to the kitchen / living room in our 2 room apartments), a trip back to fetch the dish washing liquid. I need to lie down... I'm doing it on one leg as the other is in plaster, after I slipped on the wet floor during a pre-Christmas clean up..... …..it seems I am doomed to periodic accidents with accompanying orthopaedic issues, like my current fracture in one of the lower leg bones where it connects to the ankle. They've told me I should not bear weight on it for 3 MONTHS! (It's always been 6 weeks previously, & I do have experience in ... read more

OMG... ten days on the Yantze ... no WiFi ... and then on day nine the computer fries!!! Now sitting in hotel one and a half hours out of Shanghai very uncertain that this message will get thru. Plan A is to fix Notebook; plan B is to buy something new...i-Pad?why not? At the moment am very frustrated because the travel blog site has some errors, gemail is impossible and all I want is to let all know that I have survived so far with nine days to go with the group and eight days more of prisoner on the bus! All is well except for fried notebook and one day of engorged intestines which needed a day to clean themselves out. Too much food in; not enough eliminated and the intestines revolted. Same thing happened ... read more

…..a man is kneeling & kowtowing in the middle of a bike lane at a busy intersection near the Da Run Fa supermarket. On closer inspection he has an old woman, possibly his mother, wrapped in blankets, not looking particularly well, lying next to him, as the bikes dodge around them. When I ask if she is sick he just nods in affirmation so I give him the benefit of the doubt & put some money in his container. I also wonder, if the current Australian government starts winding back Medicare & people are reduced to similar methods, how long you'd be allowed to do this before being moved on..... …..progress isn't always what it's cracked up to be. As China lurches into the 21st century, sometimes way ahead of supposedly more advanced countries, sometimes hopelessly ... read more

Geo: 31.3, 120.62Our breakfast at the Pan Pacific Hotel was as elaborate as all the previous mornings with the addition of ice cream. Yes, Brennan had mango and "yum" ice cream for breakfast. The hotel had a 10-acre garden with ponds filled with koi, pagodas, foot bridges and flowers still in bloom. The downside was that we only had a few minutes to walk around the grounds and it was our first day with rain.We were loaded onto the bus and headed to the Garden of the Master of Fishing Nets, dating back to 1140. While driving, Jo told us how the city of Suzhou was situated at the south end of the 1100 mile Grand Canal that begins north of Beijing. The canal provided transport of goods, connecting the Yangtze and Yellow rivers. Suzhou now ... read more
