So...... The packers have packed and gone. 10am until 6pm of pure stress and relief that everything has been packed and was on its way to the new life. But, I didn't recheck the cupboards....... big mistake. Left behind the printer and the pasta machine. The printing cartridges have gone but with no printer. And the pasta machine that I so needed but never used, but I suppose I am moving to Italy so who needs a pasta machine? Right? So a word of warning when you move.... check the cupboards, and then check them again. A friend is moving right now, as I am writing and I have just sent her a messages saying just that. Check, check and recheck. The following day I caught the fast train to Shanghai to bring the shipping list ... read more

Yes. One week until the packers arrive. By this time next week I will be elbows deep in boxes, tape and bubble wrap. When you are in the right frame of mind, it becomes easy to decide what you want to keep. Then there are other things that are too good to throw away so you give them to someone who will treasure it and appreciate it. Then there are things for the Ayi and the rest goes in the bin. Saying that....... It is usually then after the item has left your house that you say where is that thing I have been keeping all this time and now I actually need it? Now I have several lists around the house. Things to sell. Once they have sold who has brought them and when they ... read more

Its a rainy day and just perfect to be saying goodbye to friends. The mood is already gloomy and grey. Reflecting on good times spent in Nanjing. The craziness that we have experienced together in this amazing but crazy place. Looking forward to the future when we will meet again, somewhere in the real world and catching up on the good and bad times. Tears are shed and smiles are exchanged knowing that the important people..... you will meet again. Life is odd..... and then you become an expat and you experience an even more crazier world. Everyone experiences these changes very different.... but I know deep down the people that have touched your heart we will see again. Maybe it hurts too much to say goodbye? So its easier to pretend that it isn't happening ... read more

It's official. We have a home in Verona. Well a three bedroom apartment on the 5th floor with a huge roof top and a view. After 6 years in China it will great to be back in Europe and especially in Verona, Italy where I can understand what people are saying to me and reply. Not to forget the amazing food, wine and fresh air and the sun. China has been a rollercoaster for me. Starting in a very interesting but strange place. The language is very difficult. I thought I would pick it up easily .... so I thought. I already know 2 languages so surely I would pick up Chinese...... Wow. I was very wrong. Its all just a load of noise and sounds to me. One word could mean 5 different things depending ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78So waking up at 6am to go to work is probably something that lots of people do.For me its a struggle. Its far away. I have to organize and pay for a Taxi. There are 23-25 students per class and aged around 16years old.Its only one day a week and maybe that's the problem. So either I go full time or give up?I chose...... Give up. So I resigned today at 1:22pm.But as it happens I was offered a job at 6:08pm, closer to home so I can scooter or catch a train, (3 stops away) and there are less kids in a class about 3-7 per class the other huge difference is they are anywhere from 4-10 years old?? Interesting. So when you close one door.....Another opens.... read more

Classes are over and I've begun a roundabout trip back to Shanghai and, ultimately, SF. The University has taken us on a two night trip with Nanjing the major stop and Shanghai the final destination. Nanjing has been the capital of China several times over the past centuries, including in 1368 when it was the center of power under the Ming Dynasty, which built a wall around the city. More recently, Nanjing became the capital under Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government in 1927 and ultimately the capital of China with the overthrow of the emperor then ruling in Beijing in 1928. Now a city of about 7 Million, Nanjing may be best known by what has come to be called the Nanjing Massacre or the Rape of Nanjing. It was the fact that the city was the ... read more

Moving on from Yichang, it was another high speed rail ride eastwards towards the coast, this time 6h from Yichang to Nanjing, the capital of the province of Jiangsu. Nanjing is also known as Nanking, and is probably most well known amongst foreigners as the city that was subjected to some horrendous rape and pillaging by Japanese soldiers just prior to WWII. The Rape of Nanking, which saw hundreds of thousands of civilians brutally murdered, continues to deeply rankle Chinese sentiments, and is a highly sensitive topic, especially in view of Japan's sometimes indignant revisionist-leaning tendencies. Distrust, indeed even hatred, of the Japanese runs deeper in no other country, especially amongst the older generation, and continues to be a very prickly thorn in the relations between both countries. Alas, fortunately the history of Nanjing is more ... read more

NANJING: REST DAY Last night ate Salted Boiled Duck the speciality of Nanjing. The duck was probably boiled in brine. It was mildly salty and delicious and made you thirsty for a second SNOW beer, only 2.75%. Subsequently ordered other equally delicious dishes. 7 of us at dinner. Meal cost for a very satisfying meal and 2 beers ea. 61 RMB ( $11) This morning, after a very poor breakfast, walked down to the city wall. Nanjing old town is surrounded by a 33.5 km wall built by the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Each brick used in the construction is enshrined with the name of the village in which it was built, and in some instances by the individual craftsman. The wall offered good views over this huge city. It was a blue sky, ... read more
