Geo: 32.05, 118.78We have been invited our drivers son's 1st birthday, Bruce.Their surname is Li, so his name is Bruce Li.He is so cute. He was dressed in a traditional outfit.White with gold trim and with split pants. If you don't know what split pants are they are trousers that have the crutch open. This is so the child can go to the toilet where ever and when ever they need to. When we arrived the fire crackers start. Matthew has been given the honor of setting them off. 1st they give him a lighter. There is a pause. They then take the lighter from him and replace it with a light cigarette. Matthew didn't want to take it. He was trying to tell them that he doesn't smoke, but they had given it to him so ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Yes it was time to go fishing once again.Back to the same place but this time in the easy pond first. This was great because everyone caught something. Even Anna and Myself. The girls.... because girls don't usually go fishing... just the boys. But we showed them.We caught one each. But you don't kill them. You put them in a net and back in the water so they can remain fresh until you leave. It was very hot, overcast and very humid. We where totally soaked. If the ponds where cleaner I might have fallen it on purpose. Not a good idea. We even got sun burnt threw the clouds. We caught about 10 small fish between the 5 of us, and then decided to go for the harder and larger fish. Andy (the fisherman's son) had ... read more

This time we have moved on to the Jiangsu province as a small stop off on the way to Shanghai. We took a highspeed train there so instead of taking 20 hours it took 6!! Noice. Having had such a jam-packed schedule in Beijing though, Nanjing came as a bit of a shock. There is not that much to do or see there but luckily we were only there for one full day. We did, however, learn a lot from the 1937 Nanjing massacre memorial hall that we visited; a real plunge into China's identity and experience of the Second World War. It was a very sombre moment in our travels but worth seeing for sure. Everything was respectfully presented but also full of gruesome images of the massacred victims.. Amongst some ... read more

My experience teaching: I taught the 1st grade, ages 7-8. They were reallly cute, but very chatty in class and always touching my stuff. They have no worries going into my backpack or grabbing something of mine on the table. What I found fascinating was that the teachers leave the students on their own during the breaks. For real! When the chime goes off to begin the break, the teacher in my class picked up her laptop and took off for the teachers' room. The most difficult thing to deal with was the heat. It was 85+ degrees and that was with the AC. For some strange reason they had no problem leaving the 2 doors or the windows to the classroom open while the AC was running. I can't explain and didn't bother to ask. ... read more

'你好' nǐ hǎo Hi all! I know this might be news to some, maybe most, but I’m on a 4-week trip to China this summer. It’s a program out of San Diego, CA, that has American teachers teaching elementary and middle school children at Nanjing Foreign Language School, a private school in Nanjing, China. There are 32 teachers in all from all over the U.S. It's quite an eclectic group. We met at LAX on Monday, June 25th. More about that later. The flight left at 1:35 a.m.; yes, that’s in the morning, getting to Hong Kong by 7 a.m., a total of 15 hours. From Hong Kong we took a flight to Shanghai (2 hours) where we hopped on a bus to the Holiday Inn Express hotel. The jet lag wasn't too bad. After ... read more

For the long weekend, Humphrey, Dave and I decided to make a trip to the ancient Chinese capital of Nanjing for a weekend trip. The motto of the trip was definitely “bad luck, good times”. It seemed like bad luck just kept following us. But somehow it didn’t deter from how much fun Nanjing is. So that’s a good sign! But ya, baaad luck. Read on! We headed to the train station the morning of Saturday, June 23 to get our tickets for the little-more-than-an-hour-long trip. First, there weren’t trains for about an hour. Boo waiting! Second, executive class was all booked up so we “slummed” it in first class. Dave didn’t understand why we complained so much about the wide, plush seats and slew of European cabin-mates. It just wasn’t as nice as executive class! ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Yes. If you didn't know it is now Yabbie season in Nanjing. So we went Yabbie .... fishing/hunting/collecting?It was only a 25 minute drive from our home.We arrive at a shed at the side of the road.Behind the shed was a series of man made square lakes. In order for us to catch the yabbies we needed to catch a frog to use as bait. OK... The owner took his net and off he went. He caught some pretty quick. He then started to skin the frog while it was still alive..... Gross.OOhhh. I couldn't watch..The frog was tied to the end of a bamboo pole and off we went.It was great. You could feel the yabbies grabbing the food. Then you have to lift the line up really slow and get them onto the bank. If ... read more
