I’ve officially survived my first week of teaching English. There are many things that I love about my job, the kids in particular. My first graders are absolutely adorable and sweet. During the course of the week most of the little girls would keep saying this one sentence to me in Chinese, but I had no idea what it meant. I finally asked my co-teacher, and she told me that it meant “I love you”. Of course I completely adore them. It’s difficult to leave the classroom when my lessons with them are over because they all surround me and grab on to me. They do that to all of the foreign teachers. Whenever one of us so much as steps into the first grade wing about fifty little kids just latch on to us. The ... read more

I start teaching today! It’s actually around 3 am right now, but my internal clock is a bit off, and I just woke up. In fact, I feel entirely awake. For my first two days in China I feel into a pattern of sleeping for four hours at night and four hours in the middle of the day, both at weird times. Last night I went to bed at around 8 PM, but didn’t nap in the afternoon. I’m wide awake right now. Yesterday afternoon we got information on our teaching schedules. The final verdict is that I’m teaching two groups of 5-6 year olds (the same age as my favorite cousin!) and two groups of 9-11 year olds. Apparently I’m in charge of coming up with “English names” for my groups of 5-6 year olds. ... read more

Last night most of us went out to this bar called “Vox” which is apparently quite popular with foreigners in Wuhan. It must have been, because we were able to order our drinks in English. The walls of the bar looked like chalk boards, and every inch of them had things written on them (mostly in English) in brightly colored chalk. The bar seems to do themed nights, and last night’s theme was “emo”, but the music was mostly bouncy instrumental dance music. There were lots of flashing lights and things, and all in all the place had a pretty fun atmosphere. The drinks were around the same price that they are back in the states, which means the place was pretty expensive by Chinese standards. What I’ve been noticing is that most things here that ... read more

Lets see… I arrived at the airport in Wuhan at around 10:00 pm last night, where I was met by two of the Chinese English teachers at the school. They were both very sweet, and several people who I don’t really know showed up once we reached the school to help me get my bags into my room. I’m living on the fourth floor of the foreign experts’ building here, and my floormates were also quick to greet me. Two of the people on my floor have been in China for more than six months now, and they had lots of information to share. The girl living next door to me is really sweet and fun. The other teachers here are from The USA, Canada, Scotland, and England, but so far I’ve only really met the ... read more

This is just a quick note to friends and family to say that we have made it safe and sound back to China, but it has been a long three days! After a few days in Quebec City and a week with my parents in Brockville, Ontario, we flew from Montreal on Friday morning to begin our return trip. After almost a full day of traveling, and eleven time zones later, we arrived at the Nikko Narita hotel outside of Tokyo. The next morning we boarded the plane to Dalian for the first leg of our Chinese air travel. The plane sat on the runway for an hour before takeoff because of a medical emergency on board. The person was taken off the plane and we had to wait while they unloaded his/her luggage. This should ... read more

No, it is never a dull moment here! I have been seeing an eye doctor at the local hospital. We went to the hospital the other day for a follow-up eye exam for myself. We also decided it would be a good opportunity to get our eyes examined and buy glasses which we both desperately need. It is easy since all this takes place in the same general area of the hospital, including purchasing glasses. When we walked through the front door of emergency, the once familiar nursing station and greeting area was hidden behind a wall of people, cameras and lighting equipment. We soon figured out that they were shooting a tv series or movie. It was difficult to say which doctors and nurses were acting and which were real. No movie sets here....just march ... read more
