It has been an interesting first part of the school year here on the other side of the globe. We have only got to the middle of November and the staff is turning into a war zone. It all began with Nancy breaking her leg! Since then we have had at least one person seriously ill with an infection who missed a couple of weeks of school. I had a short five day bout with the flu but only missed one day of school. Other teaches have been battling various degrees of illness, all unrelated to China. This weekend two teachers had to have emergency operations, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday for different reasons. The only family one has here is the school staff so we all took turns at the hospital over ... read more

The countdown to Christmas is on! Today we found out our schedule up until our New Years vacation, and it's amazingly easy. We've been told to slow down our teaching (the first term is short compared to the second one, so we must have units in the book remaining to teach), and then the week before Christmas we're only supposed to review and play games - no new material. Then we were surprised to learn that we get TWO days off for Christmas, not just one... so we're stoked about a 4 day weekend. We come back and work a couple days more, then have 4 more days for normal New Years. After that we work a few more days and have a month off. Not bad hey??? Don't you want to teach English in China? ... read more

Today was Jean's 30th birthday, and he says that he is surprised at how much fun it was! It started off with... me forgetting that it was his birthday. LOL really, those of you who know me know that I am not a morning person... well, it was about 30 minutes after we'd left the house that I realized it was his birthday, and I felt SO bad... but he forgave me, so all is good. Ha thank goodness! Everyone at the school knew (because of course they have all of our personal information for visas and such), and at lunchtime they surprised Jean with a huge cake (which we don't have picture of yet because we forgot our camera - Jenny will email us pictures, and I will add them soon). And Jean's kids surprised ... read more

Today was a normal day until about 35 minutes ago... Jean and I decided to get groceries from our local supermarket (something we don't often do). First of all, we discovered some areas we didn't know existed (like the butcher, where we scored some chicken legs really cheap, and the produce area, where we got at least 4 different veggies and 3 kinds of fruit for less then $3!). Then we thought maybe we'd get some snack - a bad idea usually, but we're watching a movie tonight so we figured why not. That's when magic happened. THEY HAD DORITOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For those of you who don't know, Jean and I are crazy about Doritos, always have been. And lately I've really been craving them. Doritos have not caught on in China yet because most Chinese do ... read more

Yes, Nancy finally got her cast off yesterday. We took the big trek to the hospital in the morning and, once again, went through all the pocesses...x-rays, doctor consultation (along with a dozen others at the same time!!), waiting and more waiting. But in the end, out came the scissors and off came the white stuff. Both of us would have done a dance in the room if we could have. I asked if I could take pictures but was was informed by the nurse not to so I was a good little boy and kept the camera in my pocket. Ok, so I did sneak a few shots here and there as I was waiting around. Last night, we took a taxi to the Cafe Brussels, a great restaurant with western food and lots of ... read more

Tonight I had one of those experience we label as "Only in China". Vivian invited Summery and I to go with her to a concert - given by Jolin, a superstar in China! She is the Chinese equivalent of Brittany Spears (back in her prime anyways). Vivian's uncle has some pretty good connections, and scored her three tickets free of charge! Just so you have an idea of what an amazing experience this was - the cheapest tickets to this concert were going for 1288Y (more then $200CAD!!!), and we had tickets for the VIP section! So not only did we get to go the hottest concert of 2008 in Wuhan, but we were among only 200 or so people who had VIP tickets. Pretty cool hey? In answer to the question I'm sure you have ... read more

I had expected Halloween to pass by without notice here in China, but in fact it turned out to be one of the most festive holidays I’ve had in my adult life. My students had just finished their midterm exams, and were disappointed because the two day sports event that the school was supposed to have was cancelled due to bad weather. As a result, I was given permission to have parties in all of my classes on Halloween day. The kids loved it! We learned the words “vampire”, “werewolf”, “witch”, and “monster”, learned a rhyme about trick-or-treating, and drew Jack-o-lanterns. Of course, the kids got some candy at the end of the class as well. There are a few students in my first grade class who always behave very badly, but I was surprised to ... read more

Two weeks ago while I was on MSN chatting to my mom, an old student of mine logged in. Her name is Grace, and she worked at Citroen - a car company that I did some contract teaching at 4 years ago. We've been chatting quite often now. Grace no longer works at Citroen - she spent 2 years living in Shanghai, and is now living in Wuhan again, managing her own little shop on Wan Song Yuan Lu (for those of you that know where that is). Last week Jean and I were walking down Wan Song Yuan Lu (it's on the same road as our dvd shop), and we found her shop. It's the first time I had seen her in four years, and I found that she hasn't changed much outwardly. But she ... read more

The last four days have been enlightening to say the least. Somebody on our block has passed away. Do you know what happens in China when someone dies? We didn't know every ritual either, but now we do! First of all, firecrackers are set off at all hours of the day and night to scare away ghosts and evil spirits. Imagine Canada Day fireworks, but 10X louder and nonstop! Yeah, it's not a fun way to wake up - and this has been the last four mornings!!! Then the elderly people that know the deceased get together, and along with a PA system proceed to sing horrible songs at the top of their lungs - for hours!!! Seriously, we're a block away and 20 stories up, and we hear every word clearly with the doors and ... read more

Let me start by saying that for the most part, Halloween does not exist in China. Trick or treating is a foreign concept and the whole costume thing is even stranger for most people here. Apparently, there are places here and there across the country that do have the odd event happening because of a few stranded expats that happen to be located in the area. You can find costumes here and there, and if you look hard enough, even the odd mask, but don't count on it. Last night, a few teachers organized a Halloween party and dance at the school. For many students, it would have been the first time that they attended such an event, especially dressed up. But many rose to the occasion and we were impressed with the variety of costumes ... read more
