One of the teachers in the English department told me this story today - it's about her family. Please, don't read this if you don't want to cry, it's very sad!!! She just got a call this evening saying that her uncle (her mom's brother) had passed away. He was only 40, but this teacher thinks it was a blessing, and here is why. When her uncle was young (maybe 2 or 3 years old) he got a very bad fever which damaged his health. He was always sickly, always getting severe migraines that would begin in an instant. When he finished high school, he got a job working at a factory, but one day he got a terrible migraine at work while using machinery, and cut off three or four fingers on his right hand. ... read more

"Morning. Which place to go today? We haven't been to that one beside the Machine Tools Factory for a long time. How about that? Alright, I'll meet you there". It is 6:30 in the morning. Lao Wang, a middle-aged man is making a call to an old friend to discuss the breakfast café they are going to meet at. He runs a China Hotel in Wuhan, a city in central China dubbed as the stove city for its hot weather in summer. Their breakfast get-together (can be literally translated as Guo Zao: to spend the morning) has a history of 10 years since Wang was laid off. So are many other people of this city. Thanks to the rich variety of snacks in Wuhan, a leisurely taken breakfast with friends has long been a necessary start ... read more

I tried uploading videos yesterday, but they were taking too long and I head to head home. So I'm trying again. Keep your fingers crossed, there should be two videos here when I am done. The first is of our kids (mostly Jean's grade 5 students, a few of my grade 4 students) - they are putting on a performance for the Swedish delegation we had here last week. Honestly, the best part of having those ladies here was seeing what our kids can do! They're amazing, they put their all into everything they do (well, most of the time:). The second video is of the ping-pong club - this little guy is only in grade 2, and already he can hit that ball faster then I could ever dream of! And this teacher, no matter ... read more

I swear there must be thousands of legal taxis in this city. Everywhere you look, you see the familiar green or red cars zooming by, sometimes five or ten in a row. Indy 500 drivers should only hope that these guys and gals never get behind the wheels of a race car because they would soon take over the sport. One ride around the block with a Wuhan cabbie and you realize that they are very skilled at their job. If there is an opening in the traffic or enough room to get by something, they will make their move. At first, we held on for dear life in the back seat as we raced along dodging pedestrians and other wanna be targets. Now, I sit in the front seat and enjoy the ride. Most of ... read more

It was somewhat of a shock to turn on the computer tonight and find that the internet was working. It’s been nearly a week since it did anything of the sort for more than a five minute stretch. Well, it’s been seven minutes, and the net is still functioning, albeit very slowly. I made a friend this week. A Chinese girl who goes to college near my school met me at a restaurant and invited me to her apartment for dinner. We’ve been hanging out almost every day since. On Sunday she came over to my apartment with some friends, and I taught them how to cook French toast. As far as western food goes, French toast is very easy to pull off in China. I had maple syrup and canned wild blueberries from home. I’ve ... read more

Phew! What a week!!! The weather turned cold, we had a delegations of teachers here from Sweden (as you already know), another large group of important people were at our school, the Bank of China lost our money, and then it poured for two days!!! LOL thank goodness every week isn't like this or I'd be back in Canada by now. I'm incredibly thankful that both Jean and I have good senses of humour, and that we can laugh our way through most tough days. And here we are, on the other side, thankful we're still in China:) We went to the Bank of China today, and they are finally taking us seriously, and are searching for our money. They had received confirmation from Canada that the money had arrived, but I showed them a copy ... read more

"Do not hit the children, arrive ten minutes before your classes start,..."

This week we have a delegation of Swedish teachers visiting Wuhan, and in particular our school. These four ladies are only here for 6 days, and our school has been preparing for their arrival for well over a month. Today all of us foreign teachers were included in the plans for the morning, and I was part of the guide group all day. The morning began at 9am, where we all gathered in the conference room for introductions. Our school put together a powerpoint presentation about our school and it's role in Wuhan, and the Swedish teachers informed us how the school system works in Sweden. After this we gave them a tour of the school - the ping pong classroom, the library, the art room, music room, dance studio, and science technology classroom. They were ... read more

For those of you who don't really have an idea of where we are living, I though I'd paint a colorful word picture for you:) Are you ready? Ok - turn your imagination on! Wuhan (武汉 in Chinese), located in the middle of Hubei province, in the middle of Central China, is a "small city" by Chinese standards, with a population of "only" 10 million (give or take a few). It is known in China for it's spicy food, it's history, and the Wuhanese people are known for their temper (attributed to the spicy food!). Wuhan is composed of three cities that grew together - Hankou (where we live), Hanyang, and Wuchang, (stereotypically Hankou is known as the business district, Wuchang as the educational district, and HanYang as the industrial district - but this is changing) ... read more

Another couple of weeks have passed and we are settling into the routine of life in China. The blog has taken a back seat as Nancy's leg slowly heals and we stay close to home for the time being. We spent three hours at the hospital yesterday only to be told that she has to wait another three weeks before the cast comes off. Nancy was a little depressed but life goes on and she is going back to work tomorrow. The only major challenge is getting up and down the eight flights of stairs to our apartment since there is no elevator in the building. We have decided that I will take her back and forth on the back of the scooter, saving her lots of walking to and from the bus and the school. ... read more
