Today, a group of us went bike shopping for three of the new staff members. We headed out to a town in the countryside about forty minutes outside the Wuhan city limits to an area where we knew there were was a good selection of bikes and scooters. It was the first time Nancy and I had ventured outside of the city on our motorcycle, so we didn't know if it was up to the task or not. After a heavy night of partying last night by some of us at one of the local clubs, it was a miracle that the crew was up and running by 10 this morning. We personally got home after 3am but were ready to rumble by the scheduled time. As we rolled out of town, my machine decided to ... read more

Yes, we are still here! It has been ages since I have documented my latest adventures here. Anyway, we got back to China on August 10 after freezing our butts off in Ontario for three weeks. A great time was had by all but damn it was chilly. Who has ever heard of 15 - 20 degree weather in Southern Ontario for the last week of July and the first week of August? Either we have become acclimatised to hot weather or Canada is getting colder. We have loved the heat since we returned. I know, I know...enough about the weather but you can't beat the climate here....although some would disagree on the greatness of 100% humidity and forecasts that read daily, 38 but feels like 50. As we move towards the middle of September, it ... read more

The last time I was in China I promised myself that if and when I returned I would invest in a motorized ride. Well, I'm back - so on to the hunt for a set of wheels to call my own. This past weekend after a solid night of partying (2 clubs, dancing and street food.) A group of us were up and ready to head out in a search for wheels! Our lovely little group consisted of 3 neophytes (myself included) and 4 well seasoned road warriors that earned their stripes weaving, dodging, and maneuvering the video game like traffic of Wuhan. Strapped to the back of one of the teachers bike's (might I add, it was a lovely 1938 vintage side-car) we headed to the next town over. We were definitely a sight for ... read more

School is back in session, and I'm optimistic about the year to come. They moved my classes around a bit, so I'm not teaching grade five, as I expected to be. they've also added an extra class to my workload (and a substantial salary raise.) based on my performance last year. I'm teaching four grade two classes, and one grade three class. Two of my grade two classes consist of students that I taught last year in grade one, and two of the grade two classes are mostly new to me, though I've had a few of the kids in Sunday class. My boss's son is one of my new students! My grade three co-teacher is one of the Chinese English teachers who shared an office with me last year, and one of the ones that ... read more

Adios, Ciao, and Cheerio After finally completing our Yangtze “cruise” and the Three Gorges Dam our tour bus dropped us in yet another parking lot, this time in Yichang, downstream from the dam. We showed up at the Yichang Hotel and found our bags in the parking lot. An employee from the boat tried to say we could not pick up our bags, but I was not in the mood at that point. We grabbed our bags and started to look for our “local guide” but were not met by anyone. We found our River Guide Ben and he said to enjoy lunch and that our guide would find us. We made our way into a tiny room with five banquet style tables and once again we were sat with our usual crew from table ... read more

Yesterday, under scorching sunny skies and 150% humidity, we took part in a large motorcycle parade, one of the major publicity events of the Wuhan International Yangtze River Crossing Festival. It followed a 24.5 km circuit route across Number 1 and 2 Bridges through Hankou and Wuchang. Today, the swimming race across the Yangtze River occurs, which is the reason for being for the festival. We had to wake up at 4:30 am in order to rush across the Number 1 bridge by 6:00, a strictly illegal activity for motorcycles! Our early morning plan worked and we successfully evaded the police and arrived at the starting location by 7:00, after a couple of short stops. We were the first to arrive but others soon started drifting in as we ate our wonderful Wuhan hot, dry noodles ... read more

After leaving Chongqing (furnace one of three) and mking our way down the Yangzte we made boarded the bus and made our way to our second furnace, Wuhan. We were only spending one night in Wuhan to wait on the train to Nanjing so we used it as a chance to rest up, recouperate and get our clothes washed after the river cruise. The Irish couple and the montreal-ians were also staying just for the night and then we were all going our seperate ways. We all spent the evening together in the hostel pleased to feel and smell clean and still laughing about our cruise ship expereince. Glad that we'd done it but relieved that it was over. The next morning we got up and ventured out into the heat to visit a Buddist temple ... read more

On Wednesday, the Wuhan International Yangtze River Crossing Festival is taking place. The local motorcycle association is organizing a large bike parade as part of the festivities. Yesterday, a group of us rode across the bridge into Hankou to register and take part in a little practice run. I have rode in many North American cities over the last five years but nothing comes close to riding in this crazy metropolis of 10 million. It took us over an hour to get to the practice location from our starting point here in Wuchang. The other guys have been riding sidecar machines for quite awhile and bombed along through the traffic, without a lot of sympathy for the Wuhan rookie driver! I managed to keep up as they dodged cars and buses, ran red lights and quickly ... read more
