Today, Saturday, found me heading off to Mo Mountain with 7 others from our group of teachers and friends. The group probably would have been bigger if it hadn't been for a birthday party we all attended last night till 1 in the morning! Nancy decided to stay at home and send me off on my own for a change. Mo Mountain is on the side of East Lake and one of the top scenic destination parks in the area. It is a part of the East Lake Scenic Area which covers about 82 sq. km. The lake itself covers over 33 sq.km. It is the biggest “city lake” of China. The park was only about 20 minutes away from our apartment by bus and still in the Wuhan city limits. The weather was clear and ... read more

This is one entry I probably shouldn't publish but what the heck! I spent the day recovering from a night out on the town experiencing some of Wuhan's nightlife for the first time since we have been here. The place never sleeps as far as I can tell so far! We spent the day walking along one of the main streets fairly close to where we live. I'm sure we walked several miles and the new dinner plate sized blister on my foot that I am still nursing is the proof. As we settled down to a quiet night at home, one of our new friends called us up and invited us over for a few drinks on her balcony. That is how it started. She has been here for several years now and has a ... read more

Well, I am feeling guilty for not posting anything for awhile. We are in the middle of a week off school but Nancy was writing her end-of-term final paper for the course she is taking at the moment so we haven't done much except truck around the area and vegetate. After getting up at 6:00am to start teaching at 7:30 for the last few months, I haven't minded having a good break! Not to mention it has given me a chance to get caught up on some of the marking that I have been putting off for too long. Yesterday, we put up a mosquito net around our bed that we purchased last week. The bugs aren't bad but we hear they will soon get worse so we are getting ready. Apparently the flies can be ... read more

As much as we would like to travel to other locations in China, we are saving our money for our summer trip across Canada, knowing we will have lots of opportunities in the next two or three years to travel to other parts of this country and other nearby Asian locations. Wuhan is quite central and most places we would like to go to are two hours or less by air. Xian, the location of the uncovered terra cotta army is only about an hour and a half away. We are thinking this might be one of our first destinations when we return in September. Beijing and Shanghai are not much further. What makes it a little more difficult is the fact that we can't drive anywhere and would need to take the bus, train or ... read more

The thunder is crashing, the lightning is flashing and the rain is pouring down outside as I write this. The pattern for this last week has been very hot, humid and beautiful during the day with torrential downpours in the later afternoon and early evening. The plant life outside the apartment is taking on a new life as it soaks up the heat and huge amounts of water every afternoon. More color appears everyday as more flowers appear and it seems that the last thing to bloom is going to be the roses, which are almost ready to explode. Today, we found ourselves traveling on the "shopping bus" to "Tailor Street". Although it is still in the same part of the city as we are, Wuchang, it still took almost an hour of driving through traffic ... read more

This week Maple Leaf School held its first recruitment “show and tell” for parents interested in enrolling their children in the school for the upcoming year. A small busload of us traveled to yet another part of the city to a nice hotel/conference center for the presentation. Craig (the principal), his wife, Wendy (ESL director), myself and two other teachers were the staff members on hand. About ten students came along with us to act as translators for any parents that wanted to ask questions. Each of us were assigned a personal translator! Also on hand were Jim Beeke, the superintendent of the Maple Leaf school system, and Peter Owen, the assistant to the Deputy Minister of Education in BC. It is a unique school in that it is the only system in the world where ... read more

Sitting by the picturesque East Lake of Wuhan, the 70-hectare Wuhan Botanical Garden was established in 1956 for the study of plant resources in central China and water plants in inland China. The garden is divided into a dozen or so special gardens for the cultivation of 4,000 or so kinds of plants. It is the largest center in central China for the preservation of plants. It only took about a half-hour to get there by bus from our apartment. It is located this side of the main city center so it is not necessary to cross the main bridge into the worst part of the city traffic. Most of the information signs were also in English which was great. Much of the garden is located along the shore of East Lake so there were many ... read more

Several people have asked me how China differs from where we were. Well, in my after dinner reflecting mood, here goes. Definitely the first thing that stands out is the air quality. Let's get that over with at the beginning. We have got used to it but it is always there. The sun is rarely bright when it is low in the sky; clear blue skies are few and far between but they do occur on occasion. There is always a haze in the air that varies from thick to almost invisible. It doesn't smell, is not really irritating, and is rarely a bother. It is just always present. Having said that, the country itself is quite clean. Because of the incredibly cheap cost of labour, there is an army of people cleaning everything in sight ... read more

Has it really been over five weeks since we moved here? It has seemed like a flurry of activity since the day we set foot in our new home. This past weekend was a throwback to the land across the pond. We shopped for a few more household items at WalMart, had coffee and snacks at Starbucks, lunch at KFC and pizza delivered a couple of nights ago. So I guess we are not that far from North American civilization after all! It is definitely getting to be a small world. Our big-ticket item this week was a super-sized toaster oven. Well, you could say it is one step down from a regular oven. Ovens are not something you see over here. The only thing you can get that is close is a toaster oven and ... read more
