I know it's not October holidays yet, but here is a wonderful week-end in China. Leslie didn't have school on Friday, so we decided to do a little getaway trip. Since the 1st of April 2008, my life...and the one of Leslie have changed since we met Ma'ri...nearly already 6 months. Just moved together in "la maison du bonheur", but we didn't had the opportunity to hit the road together yet. So here it is...our first great family trip. Shanghai is so polluted these days, that which ever trip out is a great welcome. The Fuchun Resort is 40 minutes out of Hangzhou...not far away enough from the pollution, but way better than home already. So on Friday morning, we took the train for the short ride. My first train trip in China, but not ... read more

Monday, November 19, 2007 Hangzhou to Xiamen with a little in between. China is quite an interesting place. I'm glad I get to experience it for the length of time to work and explore. For the mos part, foreigners come here to work moreso then for a holiday, but if you do want to have a holiday into a country unknown , you come here because your dollar will go along way despite the ever declining rate. With that being said, I want to catch up from the last time I wrote my blog. I think I left off about partying at a great club called SOS and the first day of the series. I believe it 3-4 days ago. Since then, alot has happened. The sight seeing around Hangzhou was limited because of our schedule ... read more

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 ?? ? 4 (china diaries 4) Category: Travel and Places They say Hangzhou is the most beautiful place in China, although I haven't been to other places apart from Beijing, my experience here has been nothing lower then that standard or expectation. West Lake...........The last that I left off, I said we took a trip to the lake and I was to write about it after I got some sleep. Well, apart from the constant gloom of the weather, it's an absolute serene scene to see this peacefully large lake that Hangzhou resides around. We took a boat around to observe the sites around the lake, it was and is such a drastic change from Beijing. There are some nice parts of Beijing, but the area we were in was mediocre. ... read more

My departure from Guangzhou was a nice experience. Three days before, I arrived at Guangzhou East Station. But my train for Hangzhou left from the main train station. As I arrived, I saw a giant crowd waiting in front of the station. To enter the waiting room, I had to pass through 3 passport and ticket controls, that were guarded by soldiers, armed with rifles. A woman was shouting in a megaphone from the top roof. After 30 minutes of waiting under the burning sun, I finally entered the building and bought some last things for the travel. As I sat down and smoked a cigaret, a young chinese sat down beside me and we started to talk a bit. He told me that he was in Guangzhou for his studies and that it was the ... read more

Even though we had to get up at the unearthly hour of 3am to catch our flight from Mumbai to Hong Kong, I was so relieved to be leaving for somewhere we could walk down the street without being harrassed or horrified that I was almost upbeat. It was Ross' 28th birthday, meaning he was more than just upbeat, he was positively excited. At 3am. The flight was uneventful, other than me surreptitiously taking photos out the plane window. Is this allowed? I've never seen anyone do it before. I was slightly paranoid my camera would somehow interfere with the workings of the plane and we would end up doing an emergency landing in whatever sea surrounds Hong Kong (I had hoped my geography would improve but apparently not). Anyway, I took a couple of photos ... read more

We missed to view louts blossom by West Lake during the last summer. I still remember some guys regreted to die and then we were swearing would never miss the next year's. Time flee away under your eyelid, stealthily and fast. It's August now I suddenly recognize that we haven't had a look of this year's louts flower by West Lake. we must catch the last round. Next week we'll have had a big pity to regret one more time, if we stay home today... ... read more

Wow, I just finished up a whirlwind time in Hangzhou. This place is known for its lakes, with it’s biggest one called the Wu Xi Lake. The first afternoon we got there, we barely saw the lake, and only by accident. We decided to head over to their bustling night market to see what interesting, realistic fake goods and janky street food we could buy. There weren’t any fake goods and the actual goods were a little pricey by Chinese standards. Not much bargaining was to be had there. We saw a giant pagoda at the top of the hill, and our instinct to hike kicked in. Even though the roads were fairly paved, night hikes are a wee bit frightening. But we were rewarded with an excellent view; and, to our surprise, the pagoda was ... read more

Today we caught an 18 seater bus to the Water Town about 100km northish from Hangzhou. It picked us up from the hotel at about 7am and on the way through the city Kwan’s father intercepted us on the side of a busy road to give us breakfast! It was a bag of Baou (no idea how to spell it but it’s pronounced bow) and they were like soft doughy pork wontons and they were great. The trip took us out of the city which was what I was hoping for so we could see a bit of the ‘heartland’ so to speak and it was really interesting. Passing through the ‘suburbs’ we saw a lot of new high rise accommodation being built, and it’s been the same wherever we’ve been. Each project looks like up ... read more

I've got to say that it's not easy to keep up with this blog, especially when my typing skills are hopeless. Been doing a fair bit of walking and sightseeing around Hangzhou over the last 2 days and they say a photo speaks a thousand words so I thought I would just add a few photos and write about them. A few observations though; Traffic can best be described as fluid motion, if there is a gap that is physically big enough for a bike/car/bus to fit into then you can expect that a bike/car/bus will flow into that gap. Lanes or direction of traffic are not important and a metre of clearance is a metre wasted! The same goes for pedestrians on the road - pedestrian crossing or not. Tourists - We have been in ... read more

No breakfast again! We really must get out of this habit! Bed was very firm once again but not uncomfortable. Room was OK but aircon wasn’t working properly so no respite from the warmth and humidity, not as bad as further south though. We are staying at ‘Hangzhou The New Hotel’ (built 1913) next to the West lake. It is a very beautiful area with lotus gardens and many walkways around and across the lake, pagodas, temples, teahouses, boats on the lake and golf carts driving around it. Kwan met us at about 11.00 with a friend Dana who speaks fairly good English and we went for an early lunch at a well known lakeside restaurant called Lou wai lou. Meal was excellent, Kwan even ordered sweet and sour pork just for us, she knows us ... read more
