The tourist facilities in Hangzhou are absolutely amazing. Everything is so well facilitated. It is really nice to hire a bike & ride along the West Lake. You could comfortably spend half day riding bike along the lake until sunset when the lights from the downtown Hangzhou emerges in the background. Then get a front row ticket for the show "Impressions of West Lake" directed by Zhang Yimou who did the same thing for Beijing Olympics. The show is absolutely amazing! I was really shocked when a huge stage emerged from the centre of the lake. How could I not have noticed the stage underneath water after having spent half day around the lake!... read more

I go out for lunch or shopping or many more things with my friends here but it is always a lot of fun to hang out with other families or with other couples. We seem to have been doing that a lot just lately and it has been a blast!!! Karaoke…. Well it was Friday night and Kevin was going out with the “boys” and Liz’s husband was out of town on business so she invited the girls and I over to her apartment for a karaoke night with her and her boys. It sounded like fun although I am not one for singing in public. Sure I have belted out a few tunes with my sisters at family gatherings and like most people I have imagined pop stardom as I sing in the privacy of ... read more

Day 15-16 (March 28-29) The following day we took a flight to Hangzhou. The weather was still wet but we headed out anyway. First stop of course was lunch - noodle soup, dumplings and peach juice. We waited for a boat to take us across the lake watching some squirrels play around a tree. Reaching a small island in the middle of the lake we saw another of the currency sites. It was 3 lanterns set in the water - 3 moon mirror pools. There were some interesting legends involving theft of light and recapturing the light from the moon as well as another that involved a woman who was a snake who fell in love with a man and married only to have a local monk discover them and after several dramatic twists they became ... read more

Sunday evening, our hosts drove us from Shanghai to Hangzhuo. The freeways were very modern, and not too busy, but the countryside was almost constant with cities and towns. Shanghai went on forever, of course, with its nearly 30 million population! We arrived in Hangzhuo (a smaller provincial city of ONLY 6 million!) at around 6pm. Our hotel in Hangzhuo is a resort hotel on the edge of the famous West Lake. The area is a favorite holiday destination for honeymooners, because of its beauty and tranquility. The area around Hangzhuo is beginning to become mountainous - foothills mainly, nothing really tall. On the hill above the Xizi Hotel is the Lie-Feng Tower, which is a beautiful landmark, light up at night. Immediately after arriving and a short rest (which seems to mean only enough time ... read more

We had a boat tour across the West Lake this morning. It was a cool and blustery day - not what we had anticipated! We were taxied across the Lake to the Little Angel island (the largest of 3 islands on the lake). The hills around the lake were quite beautiful. Some nice pictures of the pagoda towers on the mountains in the distance. This afternoon Richard, Dawn and I visited a hospital in the city, the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, to meet with the Diabetes Center staff. We share yet another large lunch, and then toured their facilities. We had a good chance to speak with them about how health and diabetes care is organized in our respective provinces. This evening, Richard and I were taken to dinner by the CDC staff, and ... read more

I thought that I had published this 2 weeks ago .....sorry! So what happened in the Wilson household for the rest of the week?? Well, first let me tell you about our visitor. Our friends and neighbors were going on vacation and so we offered to look after their dog Sugar for them while they were away. We miss our dog Charlie so much so we decided it would be nice to have a dog roaming around the apartment for a while!! Kevin was a little unsure but agreed and actually loved having her lying on the end of our bed like Charlie does and snuggling up on the couch. Of course all of you that know Charlie know that he is a 25lb Cocker Spaniel that doesn’t really take up a lot of space.. Sugar ... read more

It's Tuesday afternoon and I am lucky enough to be sitting on a comfy chair on my balcony enjoying the beautiful weather that we have here in Hangzhou today. The temperatures are in the low 70's F today and after spending the day with my friends shopping and stopping for lunch at a local tea house, I am now enjoying the peace and quiet of this tranquil afternoon. (Can you tell that the girls are still at school!!!) I feel like the last week or so has been very busy here so I may need to write about our adventures on several blogs so bare with me.... Saturday 7th- We were invited with some friends to a day out with our driver Shen De. He is the head of his "tea" village and so he wanted ... read more

Well we have lived here in Hangzhou for 5 1/2 weeks now and OK, it isn't a long time, but the first month was always a milestone in my mind so I thought I would give you an update on all the day to day happenings that have been going on and my impressions so far. Life is certainly different!! We are settling in very well and there are good days and there are days when things are difficult. I am happy to report though that it has been a long time now since we have had a "bad day". The girls are happy at school. Sophie's teacher says she is working hard and is a great help in the class in promoting the English language. She is the only child with English as her native ... read more

Because we were only going to Hangzhou for 3 nights, we were able to pack everything we needed into our day packs, and gosh does that make travelling easy. Walking around the train station and generally trying to get around is made so much easier without a huge bulk on your back, as well as the day pack on the front. Unfortunately our hopes of brighter weather in Hangzhou were quashed as the train we caught informed us that the outside temperature was 6 degrees, and stepping outside for a taxi very quickly informed us that it was raining. On the first night we tried to muster up the energy to visit the night markets, but in getting dinner we realised just how heavy the rain was, and decided instead to have a nice night in ... read more

Pagodas and temples abound in the Hangzhou are, Buddism is very much alive and well in some parts of China. One of the most famous must sees right in Hangzhou is the LeiFeng Pagoda and surrounding temples. This is a short walk from the hostel and can be seen towering in the sky day and night. It has been rebuilt numerous times, with the last rebuilding in the 1950’s with only the original 977 foundations and bricks left on display. This 6-storey pagoda is climbable with a series of escalators, stairs and lifts to take you to the top, for a fee of 30Yuan. You get an excellent view of the lake and the scenery around it, and each storey has the history of the pagoda carefully carved, painted or written, a different style for each ... read more
