West Lake Youth Hostel is on Nanshan Road and right beside the lake, just out of the main city area. It’s a fantastic little place, with such a nice ambience, friendly helpful staff who speak some English and within easy distance of restaurants, temples, museums, bus and of course the lake and the magnificent walk and paths and gardens. We booked a private room, with its own shower and toilet with towels and linen supplied; just bring your toilet paper. Tea and coffee facilities are provided in each room, with plasma TV and reverse cycle air con, a neat little home away from home. The hostel has no self-help kitchen, but instead has a cook and a little restaurant with both Eastern and Western menus, at quite reasonable prices. 16 -26Y for a bowl of noodles ... read more

So now im in beijing and have been literally spending my time seeing some amazing sights so this is the first of a few entries that will go in the blog. When i left you last I was in Hangzhou , So i suppose I should start there. Well a little history about this town is that many towns in China have a lake called the west lake , but this is the original one , and it it absolutely beautiful. although it is half man made from the old marsh lands that an emporer had dredged up and the lake was formed. It is an amazing place to head out for a bit of the old mixed in with a bit of the new. There are many tourist sights here to see and although usually ... read more

hi, we have now left shanghai, we left this morning at 9 and arrived here in hangzhou at 12. we were on the cheapest class on the train it cost us all of 15 yuan (about 1.5 pound) it's called a hard seat, which is definitely what it was. Anyway we are getting better at the backpacker thing now, taking public transport instead of our own personal driver, also staying in hostels rather than posh hotels. we met loads of people in the last hostel in shanghai we actaully had a good time, we made all of 7 friends we were so happy! yesterday we went to the bund in shanghai and then onto a sex museum, you can guess which was more interesting. we went with 3 of our new friends! there was ray, who ... read more

We are safely back home from a wonderful, fun, and memorable week in Hangzhou (hon-joe) and a fascinating night in Hong Kong (a layover that turned into, gladly, an overnight stay). Every aspect of our trip went very well, from the long flights to making fast friends with our "posse" of translators, drivers, and real estate agents (7 people catered to us 4). We travelled with the Wilsons and we had a great time together. We travelled in business class, which I have to admit -- I felt like a redneck who won the lottery. Your chair folds down into a bed, you have your own TV, and the food and drink are abundant and tasty. The flight from JFK to HK was 15 hours. 15 hours!!! Lord, I thought I will not make it this ... read more

The Yangtze cruise docked in a placed called Yichang. Like loads of places in China you’ve never heard of, this actually turns out to be a city much bigger than Manchester or Birmingham without the public transport! Our next real place to stay was Nanjing, but to get there we had to follow a convoluted route of a taxi from the dock, a bus to another sprawling place called Wuhan, a night in the airport hotel and then finally a flight to Nanjing early the next morning. Our time at the airport hotel in Wuhan, was one of those “why do we do this” experiences. Cleanliness in China sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, but there must have been more hair stuck to the bedroom carpet in our room than carpet fibres. Those of you ... read more

FIRST INSTALMENT I had the great privilege of travelling with a group of young Australian students to the cities of Hangzhou and Beijing in the months November 2005-January 2006. It was one of the great experiences of my lifetime, not only for the travel experience, but the university experience, and the wonderful new friends I made. The trip started for me with leaving my hometown of Otorohanga, New Zealand, and travelling by car to Auckland airport. Actually it started a whole lot earlier than that with the finding out about the proposed trip being done through the University of Western Australia in Perth. I'd been studying the Chinese language for a while, and thought the experience of actually attending classes in China would enhance my learning! However, I thought I might be outside the age limit, ... read more

The holidays are nearly over sadly but we have packed loads in and I think we would all agree that we feel like we have had a proper break (and that it was very much needed!). On Tuesday evening, I went to get my hair cut at a local Toni & Guy salon, newly opened and got a very relaxing haircut and manicure at the same time (like that is ever stressful). What a luxury, I hear you cry, but far from it considering that altogether it cost less than £25! I had a lovely long hair wash and head massage, then had my nails painted as I was coiffed! One thing I have noticed in Chinese hiardressers (where they cut hair) is that they are all men who cut hair and wash hair, all the ... read more

Today we booked our only tour of the entire trip: a day trip to Hangzhou, about 3 hours outside of Shanghai. We had been excited for this trip and booked it for the main purpose of visiting a Dragon Well or Longjing tea plantation. Since it seemed far too complicated to arrange to get out to Hangzhou on our own, our tour ended up being almost a private tour with only 2 other people in the group with us. We lucked out and had a great guide named Maggie from Gray Line Tours, who was incredibly helpful and friendly. After an early start at 730am, we arrived in Hangzhou for a cruise on the West Lake. We saw a few man-made islands (one of which is sinking) as we took in the views along the lake ... read more

As mentioned in the previous entry (which I was unable to edit, but could actually publish) written earlier this month, its been difficult to get a computer that doesnt have conniptions when I try to load this site. So stop whinging that you dont know where I am, here is news in postcard form! Ulaan Ude (Russia, more than a month ago) - Enjoyed some delicious shaslik (kebabs) and seeing the biggest Lenin head in the world. WHY? WHY?? Ulaan Bataar - (see last post). Everyone should go to Mongolia! Everyone. Even if you dont like fermented mares milk, you should try the cheese. Remember when everyone used hankies, and you'd find an old forgotten one in a coat pocket at the beginning of a winter? Those hard bits are Mongolian cheese! Same texture (concrete hard), ... read more
