This morning the group took a leisurely bike ride into the surrounding countryside & I sweated out all the alcohol from last night. Cormac suffered a minor setback when his seat fell off, but a new one arrived within half an hour & we were back on the road. The Yangshuo area is famous for it's many thousands of limestone karsts (hills) & so our journey was very scenic. We stopped off for a drink at the base of Moon Mountain, which is a karst with what looks like a moon cut clear through the centre. After heading back to town I had THE most AMAZING foot massage EVER at Dr Lily's. Back to Bar 98 for dinner & headed home for a quiet night that turned into Leqh & I gasbagging until well after midnight. ... read more

Up early(makes a change) for our bike ride. We were leaving the Fawltey Tower hotel to ride to a smaller hotel in the country side called the Yangshuo Outside Inn, it is the same place that we had our cooking class. It is so easy to ride a bike around Yangshuo, have to admit a tad scary at first untill you get use to the cars and hundreds of other bikes around you. We rode for about 3 hours taking in the scenery. It was really just so hot. Everytime we stopped the sweat began pouring off of us. We got so hot that whilst riding our tour guide let us stop t a river to take a dip. It was lovley, untill I touched something in the water and it scared me and I jumped ... read more

Another travel day - ho hum. A minibus back down the mountain then two local busses to Yangshuo where we walked to our hotel. We were rewarded though with happy hour drinks, awesome pizza, free pool & internet at Snow's place, Bar 98. Had a few too many & stayed later than planned, but that's what life is all about isn't it - spontaneity.... read more

Up bright and early for our first day in Yangshuo. Was a bit surprised though, as I pulled back the curtains there was a massive green mountain, its a brilliant view and I didn't even have to pay extra!!! Unbelieveable! Yangshuo looks completly different in the light of day. This little city is surrounded by mountains on every side. So beautiful. Anyways back to our first day, most of us in the group enrolled on a cooking class, so we set off from the hotel, which by the way is called Fawlty Towers (I kid not) and had a stroll through the local food market to see where our ingredients had come from!!! Quite an experience I can tell you that. Started off all well and good, started at the fragarnt and coulorful fruit and veg ... read more

Yangshuo is a picturespue little town set more or less on the river Li. The town is about 1 and a half hour drive from Gulin train station, so we landed in pretty late. I would really recommend Yanshuo to anyone, especially back packers, It has more of a hippy feel to it. After our transfer we refreshed ourselves and headed for some grub at the local night (food) market!!!!!!!!! Animal lovers BEWARE. Yangshuo may not be the place for you to visit. Believe me. I will start with the night market, there are loads of stalls selling various animals. For instance, chicks on sticks, frogs on sticks, intestines on sticks, snakes on sticks, fried frogs, eels on sticks or fried, little crayfish things (shelled alive) I am trying to think of more things but my ... read more

For the first time since arriving in China, the stopover in Guilin provided some beautiful scenic views without highrise buildings, swarms of people or too much smog. We stayed in Guilin but spent a day over in Yangshuo where most of these photos are from. It was there that we were able to take a bamboo raft down the Li River, mentioned among the few destinations in China in the book "1,000 places to see before you die". It really is picturesque and we made it there and back just before the storm hit... We reluctantly booked another one of those coffin buses to take us to Xiamen where we were due to fly to Bangkok. As luck would have it, the bus was cancelled and we had to get a last minute flight to get ... read more

Day 1 We arrived Wednesday lunch time from Guilin to the hustle of Yangshuo, after a bus journey giving us tantalising snippets of the natural beauty we were about to see. Sadly, after ariving in our Hotel on West Street (essentially tourist hell street packed with hostels, bars, souvenir shops and tour companies) and having a spot of lunch we decided to ignore the many offers of a guide and go off into the countryside on our own, on one of the hotest days they have had here, on a tandem. After numerous scares on the main road out of town, we got lost. Almost immediately. In fact we could still see town as we scrabbled down dirt paths through rice fields pushing the rather underwhelming tandem to its limits. This was the first time on ... read more

China was only an afterthought on the road to Sydney, undertaken partly because I had more time than expected and partly because I didn't think the lads were capable of making up to Beijing on their own : - )! But I'd have hated to have missed out though on what we've seen over the past week. We could never come away from this trip and boast that we have "done China". Giving 2 weeks to such a fascinating and vast country when it deserves 2 months means we only have time for the well worn path and popular cities of Yangshuo, Hong Kong, Shaghai and Beijing. But it already feel like we've been here for months. By the time I leave Beijing next Friday I'll probably be the size of a small house, in fairness ... read more

26th May Friday Paul - The morning and afternoon was a little bit hazy. Hazy in the sense that I can't really remember what we did. Had breakfast and sat in a cafe all afternoon watching "Hero" on DVD is about the best I can do. Emailed our friends Andy and Anna who are supposed to be in Yangshuo this week and generally lazed about drinking milkshakes and reading. A very "Chinese" day. In the evening we ended up in "Bar 98", a little bar beside a river with a pool table and playing reasonably decent music (well except for Jet). Friday night so obviously all the local expats were out in force and a chirpy Australian bloke managed to convince us to play in a pool tournament. Laura - The first round of knock out ... read more
