At Guilin airport, there was a CITS-operated shuttle bus to the city centre. We explained that we wanted to get a bus to Yangshuo so the shuttle stopped near the train station, where the Yangshuo buses also congregate. As soon as we approached the station, a tout intercepted us and told us the bus was about to leave and cost 50 Yuan. We knew it sounded too much and had read in the guide book that minibuses cost about 10Y per person. We tried to haggle but she wasn't having any of it. Next thing, a different woman appeared and told us to hurry as the bus was leaving, the driver grabbed our bags and put them on the bus. We asked her how much and she said 40. We agreed, much to the disgust of ... read more

After all the bus & train jurneys I really needed a break 'from it all' and spend the remainig day of my time in China in Yangshuo. I only did a river cruise which I wouldn't classify as too exhausting.... read more

We clambered down from the sleeper train, tired and hungry, at about 5am, and went to check into our hotel in Yangshuo and get some grub. Yangshuo has a really amazing landscape with stunning limestone peaks for miles in every direction. We were lucky enough to get into the heart of this beautiful town on an excellent bike ride. The ride was punctuated by photo stops and interesting events, not least of which was when David managed to cycle right over a snake that was slithering its way accross the road. We're not sure whether it got chopped in two as he was disinclined to look back! The local villagers were always round the corner, armed with postcards and souvenirs, and always ready to make a 'special' deal. One local was operating a primitive contraption in ... read more

I last left you in northern Viet Nam where I'd spent a great few weeks relaxing, meeting friends (and saying goodbye to others) whilst taking in the sights. Well I've now made it back into China - I'm currently in Chengdu which is in the south-west, waiting for a train to take me somewhere I've wanted to go for many years now - but more about that later. Determined to continue the theme of overland travel (so no flights to Oz) I re-traced my steps up to the Friendship Pass in north-east Viet Nam by taking a mini van and then taxi to the border. A lot more building work had taken place since I was last at the Pass and you no longer have to clamber over so much rubble which is a bonus when ... read more

Well, my entree into mainland China was both interesting and exciting. Travel advice from Hong Kong with regards to any travel except flying was minimal so I arrived at Shenzhen (the border of Hong Kong and mainland China) a little after midday in the hope of getting an overnight train or bus to Yangshuo. And I should have studied up on my mandarin before getting here.......unfortunately, I still have Arabic floating through my brain so trying to ask for a ticket and what time I will arrive at my destination was all too much. Thankfully there were a few bilingual Chinese passengers to help me out with my bus ticket. As time has gone by since then, I have started to remember and learn phrases that get me by. In particular, I have become addicted to ... read more

Yangshuo is touted as a backpackers paradise. Away from the fast pace and congestion of the big cities, it's lies on the banks of the Li River about an hour south of Guilin. A place, it's said, where travelers can stop and rest for a few days or even weeks, relax and enjoy the scenery and culture. Maybe it's the lingering effects of my stomach issues or maybe the stifling humidity but I'm not that impressed. There is an odd haze (read smog) that curtains much of China. Almost as though the sun struggles through the morning, battling to burn off a heavy fog only to relent by midday and hang behind a shroud of gray for the afternoon. There for the is no blue in the sky nor any definition of clouds. It seems tobe ... read more

Hello! Is it Li you're looking for? After the bright lights of several big cities in China, it was time for a change of pace, so we headed for Yangshuo, a small town on the banks of the Li River in the south of the country. Despite the tourist dominated town centre, it wasn't hard to escape the busy main streets and head into the countryside. For the princely sum of two pounds, we hired a couple of sturdy looking mountain bikes for the day and armed with a (rubbish) map headed for some of the local sites. Managing to go in completely the opposite direction from that which we intended turned out to be a perfect mistake. The surrounding scenery of karst peaks and paddy fields was an almost perfect representation of what rural China ... read more

there's not really much to do when you arrive at half past two at the northern station in guilin. i took a taxi to get to the main train station, not a very busy place either at this time by the way. to my surprise the ticket office was open. so i went ther to buy my last ticket to shanghai. this time this was a pretty relaxed exercise. there was no crowd this time behind and besides me trying to get in front of me, pushing to get his hand into the counter to get a ticket before me. so i could take time to "explain" what i wanted and really got a decent ticket for the right time and in the right place for my final journey. still i had some time to wait ... read more

Yangshou Despite the overcast sky and slight drizzle the cruise downstream the famous Li River was pleasant - chugging past craggy peaks and semi-submerged water buffalo doing what ever it is water buffalo do. A fitting journey to the legendary Yangshou, which has been a backpacker hangout for many years. The whole gamut of Western food is on the menu and we must admit that we indulged in our weakness. This was particularly spurred on by our last crappy meal in Guilin! Another attraction beloved of Chinese tour groups in Yangshou is the 'Light Impression Show.' It has a cast of 2,000 people/actors and takes place on a lake surrounded by limestone karsts. The actors use flat bottom bamboo rafts to move around the lake, but it looks like they're floating on water. The choreography, lighting ... read more
