It is hard to put everything I see, hear, taste and experience into words. I went for a 'hair wash' yesterday. My hair was washed while sitting in the chair opposite the mirror, I received a wonderful head and neck massage for about 20 minutes then I was headed over to the wash basin where I lay down on a comfy leather bed with my head on a leather pillow inside the wash basin, the shampoo and condition was rinsed out and afterward I was asked how I would like my hair blowdried.. $3 and 45 minutes later my hair was so soft and beautiful. We have been told that the best way to settle into our new homes and not go into too much 'Culture Shock' is to set a routine as early as possible.. ... read more

wow.... what a weekend! On Thursday 6 of us laden with backpacks went to Shenzhen. Me, Laura, Em, Nadia, Sian and Doris. While the rest of them chilled out in a cafe and went shopping, i attempted to find us a way for us to get to Guilin by nightfall. Trains, buses, Sleeper Buses...all booked up! I was beginning to think we would never get there but in the end we paid tripple the price of a bus, hopped on a plane, and were there in an hour. So it really was rather convienient if a little stressful at the time! (Later in Yangshuo i met a guy who i had met at the Shenzhen bus station, who had bought one of the last tickets, and he said that they'd had road blocks and bricks thrown ... read more

Today I got out and did one of the things I was really looking forward to in Yangshuo - Rock Climbing! In yet another amazing coincidence, I was left a short comment on this blog by a poster jess tipping me off to a great climbing company known as Xclimber, noting that for a real challenge, I should get to the cliffs. Little did they know, I had booked a half-day climb with the same company only 2 hours beforehand! Craziness. Now to the climb. I arrived at Xclimber at 10am, ready to get to work. I was to be joined today by a slightly older man, who sat quietly on a couch inside with a look of doom plastered across his face. I gave him a Hello, responded immediately by a rather quivering Hola. My ... read more

The day began as most do around here - with peanut butter pancakes. Naturally, I asked for a side of chocolate for dipping, along with the freshest glass of pineapple juice this side of Bhutan. Once I had my fill of paradise on a plate, I set off for my real goal of the day. One of desires during this month-long trip was simply to get out and enjoy where I was. I didn't have to be going anywhere special, or honestly, anywhere at all, but instead just get going and let the road take me where it pleases. I wanted to get lost in China, and let the country reveal itself rather than I desperately searching for it. To this end, I stopped at my now favorite bike shop, and popped for the ultra-fancy 20 ... read more

Somebody has to be up there planning these things... Following my death-defying motorcycle down to Yangshuo, I awoke the next morning with a sense of both excitement and confusion. I was ready to get out and explore the area, but hadn't done much research and didn't know where to head first. So I didn't. Instead, I enjoyed a fine chocolate banana pancake and yogurt muesli at the aptly named Minnie Mao's Cafe. Breakfast, though not quite a pancake, just can't get much better when dining on a small lakefront with an overarching karst peak sitting directly behind. I strolled town for the remainder of the morning, shopping for cheap hotel rooms and what not. It is the off-season down here, and therefore a deal is to be had at every corner. Quite literally too, as every ... read more

Sorry for this one Mom... Every bone in my body ached. I had just spent the better half of my day enjoying what was the tail end of a 31-hour train ride from Chengdu to Liuzhou. I was hungry too. Two bowls of Kang Shifu noodles just don't seem to do the trick like Top Ramen does. I made my way out of the train station, dreary-eyed from the night of sleepless Chinese train riding. I needed to get to Guilin, where I could find an easy, and cheap, ride to nearby Yangshuo. I take one step out on the water-soaked pavement, and immediately am confronted by ten toats dying to take me there. "50 kuai." Not unreasonable, but the car had better be nice. I agree to go, but before we are off, my man ... read more

Took a bike ride today, in the opposite direction as yesterday. Road through a bunch of little villages, and farm land. The farmland is impressively groomed, clean, well taken care of. The villages are dirty, garbage alll around, generally uncared for. A weird disconnect there to me, but I guess to them the priority is the fields. It was another sunny nice day, a perfect day for a ride. Got a flat tire on the way back, but managed to find a few places with bike pumps along the way, it usually lasted a half hour or more before needing to be pumped up. Tough being without my tools! Could have made some adjustments on the bike, like tightening the seat. But it was in good shape overall. Had a good lunch at a river village, ... read more

Hi Everyone, Today I rented a bike for 10 Yuan a day (~$1.40) and headed out of town into the nearby rice fields, farms and villages. I took a route that was along a river, the Yulong. The raod was mostly dirt, and rocks, but easy enough to drive. Kind of like a 4-wheeler trail in AK. bikes, hand carts, cows, motorcycles, scooters, tractors, all use the road. Well, I rode for maybe an hour or so, when I was stopped at an intersection, and 2 guys started talking to me about floating down the river on a bamboo raft. Well, after yesterday's experience on the tour boat, I was more into being alone and biking, but after talking to these guys for a while, somehow it seemed like a good idea. So one of them ... read more

Finally I am in Yangshuo! Great place, beautiful karst peaked scenery, river, and farms. I'm staying at the Yangshuo Culture House, a place run by a man named Wei. The family lives here, they have rooms for up to 8 guests, and I get all my meals cooked for me. Tonight's was delicious. The room is clean, simple, nice. Getting here today was an adventure. Some of which was great, some was tiresome, some was just silly. I booked a river tour yesterday for a boat trip down the Li river, which flows between Guilin and Yangshuo. So I had to be ready to go by 8:00. Well, at about 8:40, the tour director comes rushing in and hurries us (there were 2 women waiting also) out to the bus. So, about maybe 45 minutes later ... read more

Did you know that although Hong Kong is technically a part of China now that the British gave the territory back, they still have their own money, rules, even language, and you have to get your passport stamped when traveling between the two?! We weren't so aware of the separation and when we left the train station in HK for mainland China we expected to arrive in a similar type station with money changers, food stalls, McDonald's, ect. but boy were we wrong. We got off the train in Guangzhou and were ushered through customs. We were trying to make a train that left within the half hour, but found out from a guy who worked for CTS (China Travel Service) that the train left from the other station and we wouldn't be able to make it. ... read more
