We arrived in the small town of Young Shuo after spending one night in Guilin with our newly-made Italian friend Francesco. Earlier that day, we boarded a cruise boat for what was to be about a 5 hour cruise down the picturesque Li River. The weather hasn't been the greatest since arriving in China and this morning was no exception. Gray clouds covered the sky as far as our eyes could see. Despite this, the natural beauty of this place shone through. On both sides of the Li River, steep karst hills rose up from the green valleys and we took a great amount of photos from the boat's deck. Of course this cruise was a tourist trap and vendors actually paddled up to the boat on bamboo rafts and tried to sell us tacky merchandise ... read more

26 hours on the train + an hour long bus ride and we finally arrived at our hotel, the “Fawlty Towers”. We had a quick change and then late dinner at a local pub which is one of a few Aussie pubs in town. Yangshuo is a touristy town and has lots of western-style bars and food available but still has a local market complete with flattened rat. The scenery is amazing with huge peaks that jut straight up out of the ground like they have been pushed up violently. The next morning we went kayaking despite some concern (by me) about the cool weather. Eight of us piled in to a beaten up old van and then paddled down the river for a couple of hours. We were splashing ice-cold water all over ourselves ... read more

This blog is continued from the previous entry. The middle of the night on the sleeper train I needed to go to the toilet. This was the moment I was dreading since boarding the train. 3am and a squat toilet awaits. I got dressed shoes and all, as I had been warned about the floors in the toilet. Grabbving my flushable wipes I made my way stumbling downt the dimly lit rattling train. Yes - the toilet was as bad as was reported. I did my business and flushed - imaging my effluent running out under the train. They lock the toilets when we stop at stations - one assumes because a flush ejects the waste onto the tracks and that would be unslightly at the station. I washed my hands with the water on the ... read more

The bus to Yangshuo took about an hour, greatly facilitated by the fact that the driver drove like a maniac (who doesn't here?). I was the only foreigner on the bus and no one was waiting to harass me when I got off for once. It took me a couple minutes to get my bearings and then I found my way to West street, which is the center of tourism in Yangshou. Once again, I think the lonely planet goes a bit far when it describes Yangshou as "...That legendary backpacker hangout." There were certainly more westerners here than I'd seen in Guilin, but it was nothing like SE Asia. I made my way to the second HI hostel and found that it was essentially empty. If you want solitude (from other foreigners), travel in China ... read more

After the train story we reached Yangshuo - near the city of Guillin - famous for its amazing tall and steap granit hills. It was raining when we got down the bus - and like two hapashim we looked for an hotel. Noa with her ninga turtle look and I am carring the bag and the trolly which is not very comfortable in rainy weather. we found the "lotus hill hotel" just in front of the river, with our own balcony, where we enjoyed reading and drinking coffee with malbin. We did the general staff - a cruise on the river (seeing the great granit hills), window shopping in the nice midrachov full of chinese on their new year vacation and many stores selling faked North Face jackets. There are many western style bars/coffee/resturants. On ... read more

It's been a while... I haven't updated my blog for over two weeks now, mostly because I've been climbing in China, and never really seemed to have time (or the inclination) to sit in the internet cafe for an extended period of time. I'm in Kathmandu now, and will be in Nepal for 2 months so should have a bit more time to update this site (apart from when I'm trekking...). Anyway, the last time I updated the blog I was in Cambodia in Siem Reap: since then, I've been in Bangkok for two days, Hong Kong for 2, Yang Shuo for 9, Hong Kong for another 2 and now I'm in Kathamndu. Siem Reap-Bangkok We took a bus trip from Siem Reap to Bangkok, and despite everything we'd heard about this journey being horrendous, it ... read more

Saturday all of us went on another bike ride with an American girl we met that morning named Nicki. (We were also joined by Dave and Sean's friends Dom and Sophie, who arrived thursday night.) This time we moved north along the river instead of south. (or maybe it’s east instead of west.) Dave claimed to know of a good place to go swimming. We moved off the path, through some rice paddies and gardens (the people were very friendly), pushed through some bamboo and finally found the river. We parked the bikes, stripped and jumped in. AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone wanted to swim across the river, but someone needed to stay and guard the bikes and our belongings, so I volunteered. I have to admit I was pretty bored, until a couple of little girls ... read more

The third day, Friday, we actually got some sunshine. Dave had lessons, but Sean and I took the afternoon to take a bike ride along the Li River. We got lost a couple times, and denied bridge crossing without paying a heavy fee (which we opted NOT to pay). We went through a couple villages, some rice paddies, along some gardens. It was very pretty. We eventually found the river again and took a break while we watched an old woman wash scallions in the water. We saw a few ferry boats go by, a few rafts too. If there had been more time we might have hired a raft ourselves, but 4 o’clock crept up on us fairly quickly. On our way back we hauled our bikes part way up and around a peak ... read more

In China, you never can escape the feeling you are in a country with 1.3 billion people. Despite that, and our travelling slogan - Always Look Up (China is still catching up on modern waste disposal) - this is a beautiful, mystifying and magical place that for us has lived up to our dreamy image of classic China. The landscape in Guilin and Yangshuo is stunning. It is littered with vertical karst limestone spires jutting up between the meandering lifeblood of this region - the Li River. The ever present mist and haze (although frustrating at times) only adds to the mystery, creating a real life serene watercolour. We spent the first couple of days exploring the town (only 1.3 million) of Guilin. Chinese New Year has been in full swing, and street markets cater to ... read more

The next morning we snagged a bus to Yangshuo. Originally we were going to take a boat, but they were charging about 400 kuai. Yeah right. The bus cost 28. Sean’s friend Dave met us at the bus station, and then walked us to the school. Dave had been staying in Yangshuo volunteering at an English school in exchange for free room and board. He arranged the same deal for us. In exchange for a couple two hour English corners in the evening, Sean and I got a free bed and two meals a day. Not that the hostels were very expensive, they were in fact remarkably cheap, but it was a good way to meet people and save a bit.
