3rd September 2006 We spent the morning reading and chatting and arrived in Guilin at around 2.30pm. We then caught a bus to Yangshou which took about an hour. Yangshou and the surrounding area is full of ‘limestone up-thrusts’ which are like mini tree lined mountains, that are dramatised by the hazy mist that surrounds them. The area is also riddled with lakes and streams. The town is built in-amongst these baby mountains and they are literally hundreds of them in every direction. We walked in the extreme heat to our hostel, named Monkey Jane’s, picked due to its cheapness, location and fabulous looking roof top bar. After checking in we went for a bite to eat at a bar along the pedestrianised West Street, watching the world go by. 4th September 2006 Today we hired ... read more

BRIEF ENGLISH INTRO: (Pequeña introducción en inglés para los que no hablan español --después vienen todos los posts en castellano.) Yangshuo, in the Southern Chinese province of Guanxi, is one of those places where you can really feel you belong to something. The natural environment is simply astonishing: great karsts hiding behind the mist as sleeping giants, lovely rivers slowly carving green beautiful valleys, beatifully sparsed villages and rice fields, many little paths to hike or cycle... And the people are so nice! In one hand, I met wonderful Chinese who gave me the warmest welcome, regardless of their English speaking level: Apple, Olivia, Isabella, Joy, Silvia, Cathy, Forrest, Simone, Ocean, Karen, Julia, Hanna, Jacqueline, Destiny, Nancy, Heng Fen, Jane, the 98 bar and the If bar girls, etc. In the other hand, the small expat ... read more

Bangkok - Macau - (Zhu Hai) - Guangzhou - Yangshuo - Guangzhou Ni Hao - as a quick into I should point out that this was written a few weeks ago (around 23rd July). It's taken until now to find a place to add a few photos. Hence it predates the previous entry that I posted a few days ago. Ni Hao from Yangshuo. We are stuck in Yangshuo, which is a good place to be stuck. It may be the 'very hot & very wet' season, but it's also the Chinese summer holidays. Hence there are literally millions of Chinese on the move - meaning that busses, trains & planes are all full. We were trying to buy a train ticket out of here for almost a week with no success. As former travel advisers ... read more

Sadly, our time in China is coming to an end. The past three weeks have been an amazing blend of urban/rural Chinese life and from what we've seen and heard from others, China wouldn't be a bad place to live. At the very least, we've got a list of cities to visit the next time we're in the area. A Different Type of Government The last posting seemed to come across a bit too-harshly on the China's political system and the rapid urbanization of it's cities. After seeing clean, world-class cities built from nothing in less than a decade, it seemed necessary to remind ourselves that there were still problems under the sparkling exterior. However, to be fair, we should also mention some of the things that China seems to be doing better - or just ... read more

Monday July 17th The first thing I remember when I woke up was that I was totally freaking out because I couldn't find my daypack (my camera was in there). I quickly realized that I probably forgot it at Susannah's where I had a bit too many beers. I quickly ran there and found my daypack which had been kept by the staff with nothing stolen. I was so relieved yet felt so stupid. I thanked everyone and left to go back to my dorm. I'll definately go back there just to encourage their honesty. I really need to be way more careful about this because losing my camera would be a huge pain. The day was just as rainy as the others which really annoyed me. I went to Everest Cafe where Pepe, the french ... read more

(Just to warn you, this entry ended up being incredibly long and may be best read in multiple sittings. I hope it's worth the effort) So just to say it right up front, screw typhoons. They're really starting to mess with my travel plans and are hampering a schedual that's packed fairly full already. The only plus is that they bring a refershing breeze with them that helps to blow away alot of the humidity, and can bring the temperature into the region of bearable. This is nice as I have been sweating like an athiest in church, but it is not enough considering all of the headaches it has caused. The reason for all this complaining is that a typhoon has indeed been wreaking havoc along the south-eastern coast of China for the last week ... read more

I wish I could say that all our experiences here have been amazingly successful, but as everyone knows, in travel, nay in LIFE, this is never the case. Still, we live through these strange, sometimes unpleasant, sometimes scary, adventures so that afterwards we can bore our friends with the stories and reflect on them with smiles. Our latest mishap, so to speak, is entitled Putuoshan. Putuoshan is an island off the east coast of China, in the East China Sea. Its main attraction is a sacred Buddhist mountain, one of the four in the country, hence the name. ('Shan' is 'mountain' in Chinese). (On another brief note, we gave Kyle the chinese name "Wai Shan" which means "foreign mountain" because he towers above everyone so much and scares all the chinese people away.) We decided to ... read more

Due to extremely bad weather in the first days of my trip to China I don't have pictures here. Don't worry they're coming in the next blog. Friday July 14th I was still in a bad mood from the day before. I woke up late and took time to prepare everything so by the time I was in the ticket office for the bus company that would take me to Guangzhou it was 10:00. I got a ticket for 11:30 at the other side of the border and I took a bus going to the border. I did all the border formalities things which took about 30 minutes, withdrew some RMB and went looking for the bus station. The first thing that caught my eye when I crossed the border was the tour groups and the ... read more

We've covered very little ground since our last update, but we fear that our route over the next seven to ten days may take us past very few modern luxuries, let alone an internet connection. Although we have not travelled very far from Guangzhou, as the crow flies it's probably only a couple of hundred kilometers (or just round the corner in Chinese terms), we have used just about every method of transport imaginable, and seen the landscape turn from the industry and wealth of southern Guangdong, to the "other-worldly topography" of Guilin and Yangshuo. We travelled from Guangzhou to Guilin on an over night bus, which is always a bit of a lottery in China. There are various thing running through your mind as you approach the departure stand: is it going to be a ... read more

After a late start, today continued along in lazy mode. Brunch was again at Bar 98 (says something about the food I guess), followed by a spot of shopping amongst the throng of tourists on West Street & some exploring along the riverbank. After getting rained out, I returned to Bar 98 for a quiet beer & attempted to catch up on my so far non-existant journal. We checked out late & minivaned it back to Guilin, where we boarded the overnight train to Shenzhen (near Hong Kong).... read more
