Auch ... read more

Antarctic is done for the time being. Someday I may try to go back to that type of life and travels. But now a new adventure awaits me. It took two years and a forest of paperwork, but now I have a job working as support staff at the American Consulate in Guangzhou, China. Ive been in country for seven weeks now on the start of a two year contract. Every weekend I explore the sights, sounds, culture and people of this marvelous city. My current photos are listed by city location and month taken. My first two+ months, I walked every where, but now that my bicycle has arrived I get to see much more of the city of Guangzhou and surrounding area. Some people place a stuffed critter of one kind or another in ... read more

For me these Diaolou or Watchtowers were a great discovery, to escape from the guangzhou hustle and bustle. The diaolou are fortified multi-storey towers, that were built by returning Chinese immigrants from North America and other parts of southeast Asia. The Diaolou were constructed at the beginning of the 20th century and there were more than 3,000 of these structures spread allover the place. The diaolou were used as housing and as protection against the bandits and, during the Second World War, the Japanese. Nowadays there are probably half of them that are still standing and I decided to visit the watchtowers of Kaiping which is situated 110 kilometers from guangzhou. once I got to Kaiping bus station I had to catch another local bus to head at the Zili Village which is about 25 kilometers ... read more

Hey Guys ! After beeing busy for the last month I decided it was time for another update on whats going in. I’ve been in China for more than 3 month already and a daily routine has start to set in. Last week I successfully passed all my Chinese mid-term-tests in University and I’m currently preparing on my next test on December 6th. This test will be an official test called HSK test which I can later use for job applications etc. The Hsk tests are split up in 6 levels, of which I will be tested in the 3rd. Besides studying for my Mid-term-exams I also took some free time and went on further adventuring Zhuhai. During normal School days I normally spend my free time either studying with my friend Dima ( He’s from ... read more

Wednesday 4th November 2015 Today we were on the move again and we had a fast train booked for 12:20 from Guilin North train station direct to Guangzhou. We jumped into a taxi after checking out and then sat down into our fast and comfortable journey on the train. Leaving Guilin offered some stunning countryside views through the train windows, so the journey out was something special too. We'll miss this scenery of Guilin. Arriving at Guangzhou station, which is just outside of Hong Kong (well, about 2 hours), we were met by my other flatmate from University who lives here. Like Michael, I hadn't seen Ryan in a long time so it was good to see him after all these years. He had arranged a hotel for us and drove us straight there to check ... read more

Tuck away in a short distance from Lianzhou city is the old village Baoan, where they claim to preserve a traditional festival for more than a 1000 years. The Tai Da Shen Festival is held every year on the 9th day of the Lunar September. The legend said it was granted by the Emperor after one of their great ancestor Wong, who success in reshaped the country when it was falling from corruption, possibly helped by the Supreme Deity(Da Shen) . Wong brought back the same celebration to his home town Baoan and arrived on the the 9th of Lunar September the year 740. and the event kept on until this day only minus the 39 years banned during the culture revolution. 你好 Ni Hao ! Hey Guys ! So its been more than a month now that I have lived in Zhuhai and its time for a little update with what is going on in my life right now. The first 3 weeks of my stay so far where really interesting and I think a good start for me to adjust to the Chinese culture and food. While Jeff the Dad was working in Beijing, Ingrid took me to different places here in Guangdong ( The Province I live in ). We went to an Ocean Theme Park, to a small replica of the summer palace from Beijing, and we stayed for 2 nights at a Hotel on a nearby Mountain where we went wild water rafting. Besides all of this we also went to the nearby ... read more

After my flight was delayed again, ( I’ve been pretty lucky so far ;) ) I arrived at the Airport of Zhuhai at 8pm. There, my Hostmother “Ingrid” picked me up and we drove back to the apartment. The Kids where still up and I could meet them. As you will see in the pictures they are twins. One is called Christine and the other one Crystal. After a nice and friendly welcoming Dinner, I discovered that my Bed was in fact hard as stone. It took me days to finally adjust to the Bed. Over the next days we went on different Trips. Zhuhai is famous for its Statue of a Fisher girl, so I was quit eager to see her. We went to the Lovers Road, which is a road next to the see, ... read more
