Hello all, We made the decision last night to book a hostel for two nights in Zhongshan, with the intension of getting a bus into Macau two days in a row. We couldn't afford to stay in Macau, and Zhongshan is only about 30km away and at about a 5th of the price. However, after we had booked the hostel here we were informed that we would not be able to go to Macau for the day and then re enter mainland China (i.e. back to our hostel, where our bags are) due to immigration laws like HK. So, we have decided to hopefully go to Macau on the ferry when we are already in Hong Kong. We have come to this hostel in Zhongshan anyway because we would have lost money on the pre-booking fee. ... read more

Hello Followers, So today we woke up in Guangzhou, Vicky had a good night sleep I on the other hand did not!! Looking, we found my mattress was about 1 cm thick so it was like sleeping on the wooden slates however Vicky was 4 inches!!! We had planned to head to Foshan today to see Vicks ex step cousin Aaron, who she hasn't seen for about 10 years. We were lucky as we could get the metro all the way there with only 2 stops and it was only 77p/single!! So an hour and a bit later we arrived. First impression was poor it seemed a bit run down but it was on the edge of the city so we held back our expectations. Aaron is teaching English out here which definitely appeals to Vick. ... read more

Teacher, Leave us Kids Alone Upon arriving in China, I was surrounded by so many new sights, smells and sounds, but as the days turned into weeks, I knew something was not quite right… Alas, I realized as I reflected on the thoughts of Wilde, “I am not young enough to know everything”. What was I to do? Aging is such a flaw to growing old, but despite this, I did not want that to hinder the fact that I am still not old enough to know nothing! So with that ambitious thought in mind, I decided I must enroll in a course and learn Chinese! So that is what I did. I found a course offered by the university and enrolled in basic Chinese classes, and as I entered class on the first day, I ... read more

Hello People, So we were lucky enough to get another lie in this morning, it was good but same as normal we were both up at 7am!!! Still out of bed at 8am. We headed into town for some breakfast, I had dumplings, as the Chinese were and if its good enough for them its good enough for me!!! Vick managed to get some good fruit bread at last and bought a mango, this disappeared in record time in the hostel. (I think she enjoyed it) We sorted out a few things and then headed to the travel agents to get or bus to Guangzhou, when arriving they told us the times had changed and the type of bus had changed, one of this was good the other not so!! They delayed us an hour however ... read more

Hi All, Lovely to go to Shenzhen for the weekend and to escape the chilly weather here in Hunan. So with a wonderfully sunny and warm day I went to visit Lian Hua Shan park to see the statue of Deng Xiao Ping. Deng Xiao Ping was definitely a survivor after surviving many of Mao's purges and even ended up working in a tractor engine factory during the Cultural Revolution, while others like Liu Shao Qi were murdered. Although he was responsible for the opening up and economic reforms of the late 70s and early 80s he was also took a strong line with the protesters by sending in the army during the 1989 Tiananmen protests. The gardens and bonsai trees through out the park were absolutely stunning. Such beautiful colours. The park was packed with ... read more

Hi All, About an hour or so just outside of Shenzhen is Dapeng. Just outside the new town there is an old fortress which was a site of a battle in The Opium Wars against The British. It was very quaint and pretty walking around this old walled town, and also free of charge. There were quite a few tourists but not too many to feel cramped. It was lovely walking around the back lanes and being able to sneak a peak into the old houses. Enjoy the Photos Jah Bless... read more

As we prepare for our four day mediation course in the jungles of Northern Thailand, I have started reflecting on some Buddhist philosophies on life and meditation. From what I can tell, a monk’s life is anything but easy, and it doesn’t seem like they have much fun. Most of their days are spent living a very simple existence as they aim to clear the mind through meditation and accept that life is little more that a constant state of suffering. The monk who wrote the book I am reading, however, states that although every day is not a party, there is much to be grateful for. Buddhists believe in the idea of samsara and reincarnation; they believe that the first thing everyone should be grateful for is the fact that they are born human. In ... read more

Hi All, I've visited Shenzhen a few times in the last couple of weeks and I must say I've really enjoyed this amazing city. It's difficult to imagine that around 30 years ago this huge city was a couple of fishing villages. The city is massive but the metro is very convenient and very cheap especially when using the Shenzhen Tong, like London's Oyster. One beautiful Sunday I visited the beaches which were really beautiful and the water was very clear and lovely and warm. There are also some beautiful parks that are full of some incredible flowers and tropical plants and one evening I joined the English corner to meet some new people. Another joy is that because most people living here are migrants there is an amazing choice of restaurants. The airport is an ... read more

Did the real ever exist? As Erin and I sat discussing life – as we often do – I stopped and asked her, “Did the real ever exist?” Now that I am settled in China, it seems as if the search for the real is about as metaphorically difficult as finding the last unicorn (‘The Last Unicorn’ is one of Erin’s favourite movies). What does seem evident, however, is that the errors of humanity defy culture, race, belief and ideologies; in short, humankind is very much the same no matter where you are. In one of my past posts I suggested the simplicity of the people here, and while that perception is genuine, I realize that it only appears simple relative to the life I knew in Canada. The lives of the Chinese is in fact ... read more

One of my all time favorite Shakespeare moments has to be from Hamlet. In it, Polonius gives some last minute advice to his son Laertes before he heads off for an adventure in Paris. He is a little long winded about it but ultimately he advises his son, “This above all: to thine own self be true.” While this quote has been so overused that it is almost cliché, it is still great advice, so much so, that I have spent a lot of time thinking about how applicable that particular quote is, not only to my overall life, but also to my feet. As my parents will tell you, I was born with bad feet. Actually, to be more precise—I was born crippled and I was exceedingly lucky to be born in Canada where they ... read more
