As far as small places go, a cathedral usually does not qualify but, being only slightly bigger than the square footage than the church on Shamian street, the Sacred Heart Cathedral is such a place. It is a beauty of ancient architecture placed in an older section of Guangzhou with a metro station that opens right on the small alley-street that leads to it which shares it’s name with that of the street (Yide Lu). From the old stained glass windows, gargoyle like heads, and the sharp peaks, it speaks of the ancient times when this nearly Gothic architecture was being used around the world. As I do with temples, I refuse to take pictures once I am inside ancient holy place out of respect but with wide open doors, it is easy to get a ... read more

And with a more complicated metro transfer, I arrived at the Canton Tower station. Ever since the Pearl River boat tour, I wanted to find this nighttime rainbow coloured tower and learn more about it. And after just over a month, I was finally coming out of the metro in the courtyard of this monolith that had surpassed the CN Tower in Toronto. It had not remained the tallest tower ever built but it did hold the title for a little bit. Coming from Sudbury (Ontario, Canada), I did have respect for tall structures thanks to our own “Smokestack” but no one gets the chance to climb that icon of my hometown. I did have the chance to climb to the observation deck of the CN Tower (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) but never stand in the air ... read more

There's a song by TLC called "Don't go chasing waterfalls" and after this adventure it is definitely something I think everyone should live by! Laura and Val had read about a mountain that had beautiful cherry blossoms, gushing waterfalls and fruit you could pick from the trees and eat. The waterfalls, cherry blossom and fruit were all on the same hike path so we decided to do it. We found out where we had to go and met at the tube station. We then had to take a bus. We thought we knew which bus we wanted but a Chinese lady said we needed a different bus. Why wouldn't we listen to her? She's local and knows the area better than we do. The bus she suggested arrived and so we got on. The hike was ... read more

My next venture out was more of a surprise which was one of my friends (and guides) typical procedures. She would message me that she had found a new place to show me. She would have me meet her at a metro station before whisking me off on a new adventures. Unfortunately, some of her adventures did turn out badly, like entering a park as a major rainstorm started. I unfortunately had learned my lessons from Jinhua about how hard and long it would rain for and the fact that my cellphone/camera did not do well in the rain if I tried using it. This trip was one of the good ones if a little short on time for me to explore everything in the Southern China Botanical Gardens in Guangzhou. It size was as big ... read more

As I stepped out for my lunch and self planning session for where I should be visiting next, I received a text from my deaf guide to meet her at the metro station by my hotel. When I asked her why, she simply said that she was taking me to one of the many places I had on my list. I took a deep breath since it had been nearly a week ago she had last contacted me. This was after 3 failed places to visit including the rainy day in one of the many large parks here in Guangzhou and two closed exhibits. I decided to forgo having a sit-down lunch and grabbed my food to go and headed to meet her. It was a simple ride this time without even needing to change lines ... read more

I discovered Shamian Street on my own and because it was mentioned to me by my Chinese friends in Guangzhou. After a long walk by the Pearl River, I ended up at a coffee shop which is the border of Shamian Street. It is technical more of an island than a single street with it’s own nearly self-contained society. Shamian is an older section of the city of Guangzhou that kept slightly frozen in time because of its value as an open attraction. The older architecture and street style makes a good place to look back at what this city once was like while still seeing some more modern signs of life. The main central street has been turned into a garden of sorts with many statues and giving everyone a good chance to see all ... read more

Once again my guide and friend drags me out early in the morning for a long metro ride and taxi ride to the edge of Guangzhou with very little explanation from my guide. Maybe I should take this opportunity to explain that my guide never “spoke” because she was deaf and mute. She could understand written English and Chinese but would only sign comments when she couldn’t simply type it up on her phone for me to read. It was sometimes hard for us to communicate but it is less difficult than with most Chinese people if I don’t have a Wi-Fi or WLAN connection. This trip did challenge my legs more than any others because of the sheer number of stairs I needed to climb. Arriving to what appeared as nothing more than a string ... read more

During one of my walks to familiarize myself with the area I had moved into for my second month in Guangzhou, I discovered a small museum. It took a few attempts before I actually was there when it was open to the public. The Guangzhou Pugong Handai Ceramic Museum is not a big place with a bit of a limited collection. They do cover indirectly 5 different dynasties (Han, Northern Qi, Tang, Song, and Ming) but mostly focuses on the Han Dynasty. Good reasons to visit it would be first and foremost the small price you pay for admission with your ID (or Passport) to see a good collection of ceramics. It is a small place, yes, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is a good place to have your first exposure to what ... read more

Christmas isn't really a holiday over here as we know it in the West. Schools don't shut, there's no before or after sales shopping. We were lucky that our company gave us Boxing Day off so we had a three day weekend. In Sea World there's a lovely Mexican restaurant which the Irish and Malika had never been to, so Christmas Eve we decided to visit it. We went for lunch knowing it would be quieter than at dinner and we would probably eat enough not to need dinner. We started with cocktails and finished with cocktails and somewhere in between there was some Mexican food. We stayed in the restaurant for most of the afternoon leaving at around six. No one but me had been to the Snow and Ice exhibition so as it was ... read more

For the past few weeks we have been rehearsing Christmas songs with our children to perform at the Christmas show. Today is the dat of the show and our Christmas Party. The show is all day with K3 first, then K2 and K1 finishing it off. I started the day at the entrance gate waving hello, and handed out seaweed as a present from the school to all the children, dressed as Santa. Yes that's right, I was dressed as Santa Clause -I even put a pillow under my coat. After that parents and children crowded around a red carpet that ran around the whole school. K3 walked the red carpet first saying Merry Christmas to every one as they walked past. I had to walk with our class at the front smiling and waving and ... read more
