Weekend Outings Shenzhen is a big city and even though I tried I didn't get to do and see everything but I thought I'd talk about a few of the things I did manage to see and do during the weekends. The weekend after Destry and I went to Hong Kong, Laurent, Destry and I went to Happy Valley. Happy Valley is a theme park in Shenzhen which also has a water park. I'd never been to a proper water park before so the aim of the day was to get on all the water rides. However, when we arrived at the park the water section wasn't open so we went on a few of the theme park rides, including a roller coaster that uses a swing shot motion to activate the car, it was pretty ... read more

Geo: 22.53, 114.1311th April, 2017The day started early, up at 5.15am and caught a Taxi to the meeting place, the taxi dropped us around the area but once again we were lost trying the find the pick up place, getting their at 6.40am when the tour was supposed to leave. A good brisk walk for us and google maps was not much help.Picked up with a family from Caulfield, Michelle, Mark and son Max, driven to the Station where our guide Elton met us and we connected with two from India. First class train trip to Tuen Men, very comfortable, elited and walked to customs which when we passed through we were in Shenzhen, China. Elton had to hand us over to Bruce, he did not have a permit to work in China so stayed with ... read more

Dapeng is a sea side town split in to two parts. There's the newer area of Dapeng and the older area. The older area has a fortress, a temple and an area with lots of bars and restaurants (called the new fortress). From the Shenzhen Dapeng is around an hour and a half journey by bus. As Laurent lived in Dapeng, the Irish and I all spent some time in Dapeng. We had only been to the new fortress and not visited any of the historical parts. So one weekend the four of us decided to go there for that reason. Unfortunately Val was leaving to return to America that day so couldn't join us. We had gone out for a meal the evening before to say goodbye. We started by going to the fortress, a ... read more

It was the middle of March and Laura and I decided to try our hike again. We did more research and went a completely different direction to last time. This time our hike started in the sea side town of Xiaomeisha. We had read that the hike could take up to five hours and as we knew we would want to stop for photos and the bus ride took over an hour we arrived in Xiaomeisha at around 10am. We started in the right direction and we were doing well. We followed the path and came across a viaduct. We crossed it and found the way we wanted was blocked by building work. We were starting to think China didn't want us to hike, there was always building work. We couldn't turn right and turning left ... read more

Trip details: Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Toronto, Sudbury, Toronto (again), Beijing, Langfang, Beijing (again), and back to Shenzhen. (Pictures: Toronto, Sudbury, Beijing, Langfang, and Shenzhen) Last Few Days Before the Flight Back ... :^( My time in China was coming to a close. At least my first trip in this foreign land far from Canada. I must admit that I have seen very little of China over the past 9 months. The simple beauty of Jinhua, Jishou, and Wuhan; the tourist-traps of Guangzhou and Shenzhen: all this made some of the sights of Paris pale in my memories. It has been a wonderful adventure but, with 4 days left here, I started realizing how much I still had not seen. It was earlier than my originally planned return date of February 19th (2016) and slightly forced ... read more

This was one of the many return trips I took to Guangzhou helping a friend and returning to my Adventurous self. I spent nearly half my first month in Guangzhou and the rest in Shenzhen upon my return to here. A new view and location in Shenzhen was found including a small but quaint apartment close to the Shenzhen North Rail and Metro Station. This freedom didn’t help me much as I felt too much like I was “nesting” here in Shenzhen instead of hunting down the wonders. I was still taking my normal exploratory walks around my new area but it was more to search for needed items instead of finding hidden gems. My return trips to Guangzhou helped me remember the feeling of being an adventurer once more. This feeling lead me to explore ... read more

My incredible luck once more came into effect as I went to visit an area called “Xili Lake”. It is one of the new metro stations created in Shenzhen and I was thinking a nice park could be found there. Instead of a lake with a lakeside park or beach, I found Safari Park Shenzhen. I relished the chance of seeing another wonderful safari park after the great experience I had in Guangzhou (Chimelong Safari) but wasn’t prepared for this slightly smaller place. I will note that with the bright colours and cartoonish statues within the place, the Safari Park Shenzhen is geared for children but still enjoyable for adults (or children of all ages). Once more, I will not list the many animals present in this safari park since you can see all of them ... read more

I was now indirectly living in Shenzhen by now but I would return often to Guangzhou trying to complete the last major item there: The Guangdong Museum. It would be about a week after my official departure from Guangzhou that I finally was able to visit this last place and at the same time see the Hanxinsha Asian Games Park near by. But it was also a moment of minor inconvenience for me as my ever present courier bag ended up being locked in the museum after closing time due to my absentmindedness and need for a coffee. The Guangdong Museum host not only their own exhibits but also many travelling exhibits from around Guangdong and all of China. During my visit, they showed you the history of the navel trade routes created from China to ... read more

My second view of Shenzhen: After a 45 minute rapid train ride, I was back in Shenzhen but with an alternate purpose for my visit to here. Yes, I was offered a job to teach English in a high school. It was a bit of a nervous time in my life which colored how I saw this city upon my return. I was also displaced into a new part of Shenzhen which was not the technical end point for my long-term stay here. This 5-month layover spot was an older part of the city which was very similar to where I ended up living in Shenzhen over a year later. Both were beautiful quiet places but very simple in structure and definitely not like my starting point at Luohu (first set of photos). It was here ... read more

As a writer by choice, libraries have always held a special place in my heart. I could not resist the chance to visit the Guangzhou Library. It was an impressive structure to say the less about this “Mecca” of literature I was able to witness. With 10 floors separated into two towers with a central elevator and escalator system, it was a work of art for me. Unfortunately during my visit, I could only enter the North Tower since the South Tower was closed for the evening. I was also only allowed to go up to the 7thfloor because of the time of my visit. I will state the fact that this library never closes fully, running the small section of 7 floors of just the North tower 24 hours a day except for holidays. This ... read more
