Hey guys! So, we made it! Mostly alive and almost entirely intact. Just a really quick post today because from 8:00 in the morning to midnight Brisbane time was spent in airports or airplanes and, best case, nothing interesting happens in them. So yeah, the flight was good, kids were good, food was less good. Border control in Shenzhen was somewhat arduous but that was pretty standard I think, and it wasn't hard, it just took a long time and now we have our fingerprints on file, so our plan for the Chinese 'Heist of the Century' is now going to require some tweaking ;-) From there we caught a couple of metro trains back to the area Kate and Lloyd live and then walked through a bit of the city to get to their apartment. ... read more

Hello! We went to an area in Shenzhen called Dafen today - it's a really cool art district with a gazillion (I counted them) galleries for oil painters. It's awesome, basically an art factory - which sounds less romantic than it should - but some of the stuff is really really good. There was enough there to keep us going through the whole afternoon - lots and lots of walking but it was a really nice area. All the streets look the way you imagine they should, crowded and narrow, and even though it's in a grid there are little alleyways that stray off the main roads. There was one alleyway that we walked down that opened up into a bit of a bigger square where some guys had laid out a massive painting - it ... read more

So, to give a bit of a background, I am going to tell you a story. About Mid-May I received a text message from my husband. It simply said “Call Nick. I want to talk to him.” Nick is a friend of mine from high school; we also went to the same college together and had similar circles of friends. Since we moved to Richmond, I told Blake that if he ever had questions about God, that my friend Nick could give him the best advice (sorry man, but I did). So hearing this, my heart lept. I had been praying to God that Blake’s heart would be healed and he could fully rely on God. Blake is a Christian, we had gone to church together most of our relationship, but there’s a difference betweeen knowing ... read more

I will be honest. I have no idea how to title my blogs. But the hubby and I did routine maintenance the other We took it back to the basics All of the hustle and bustle of city living, metro hopping, appointments for things like internet and light fixture replacement, locating a grocery store AND locating things in a grocery store .... and we were worn down. And it was only Monday! So, like teenagers, we wandered around the mall with no destination. We ignored our phones unless it was to take photos of the scenery. We held hands and meandered through the different food stops...and even contemplated catching the train like we would do if Madison and Carter were with us. Fashion Plaza Tianhe is unlike any mall I have stepped foot in. There are ... read more

Good evening! (Morning for my East Coasties) Last night we hit burn out. We are averaging 15,000 steps via our fit bits; it’s mid to upper-80s with 100% humidity. My hair hasn’t seen conditioner in weeks....and my hair is finally curly! We were tired, hungry, sore, hot, sweaty, and we needed to walk about 4km to food. At this point, I still hadn’t found a supermarket with fresh meat (or smelled that way) and neither of us wanted any resemblance of rice, noodles, spicy, or bones. So, we found a Mexican restaurant WITH an actual website! So, off to explore we did. And even with our tired, aching, blistered feet, we happened upon a paradise of sorts. Modiesha Park. Elephant eared plants, Pam trees, and a slight breeze near the River, we walked on a brick ... read more

So, there’s a lovely American saying that goes, Third time’s a charm! and that definitely applies to this blog. I have two unpublished articles, but I am bound and determined to make this one published. Blake and I have been here approximately two weeks and have finally gotten settled into our apartment. Our first place together, with both names on it. It’s loft style, with a gorgeous night view of some buildings along the Pearl River. If you strain your neck, you can see the antenna of the Canton Tower. Our flooring is cherry wood, and we have wrought iron features. Our couch is a silver, and it came complete with some cooking supplies, an ikea pup, and a yoga ball. As for the sites we have seen and the things we have tasted: Day 1: ... read more

Good morning! It’s 10:48am China Time and back home, our family and friends are tucking in for bed. After uploading some pics from my trip to the Guangzhou Zoo, my high school English teacher suggested I start a blog. So, without further ado, I present to you: The Fryed Life. Blake and his orientation class are going over how to interact with kids and keep their attention...meanwhile, I am sitting in a mall massage chair and received a great massage for a whole 12¥ ($1.75 USD) and oh man was it worth every penny. Yesterday I explored Guangzhou Zoo. Mom tells me I have been to the zoo in Washington DC as well as the Natural Bridge Zoo near my hometown but I have ZERO recollection of this. So for 20¥ ($3 USD) I decided to ... read more

During one of my subsequent visits to Guangzhou (since it’s only 45 minutes away by rapid train) to meet with an old friend, I discovered YueXie Park while waiting to meet them near Xiao Bei metro station. It was only a short walk down the street where I spotted archways along the main road which shared the same name as the metro station. As always, my luck had me on the right side of the wide street to stumble across a large gate house by the road. I slowly entered to explore a bit to discovered this park that stretches between two main roads (Xiao Bei Lu and Jiefang Bei Lu) along Huanshi Zhoug Lu. I definitely did not have the time to cover the entire park but only got to wander through the east section ... read more

I am happy to be back to China after about two years but, this time, it will be a travel/work/study experience. At my arrival in Guangzhou Baiyun airport, I had an inconvenience, my luggage was delayed and I had to go back to the airport the day after to pick it up. That was not enough, when I caught the metro to go to the hostel I booked, it seemed that the address I had was incorrrect because looking on my phone app the place was in front of me but there was no sign of the accommodation, none knew this place, I walked around the area to see if I could find it but with no success and at the end I found out a hotel near the metro station Meihuayuan. The place was very ... read more

Today was the last day in Taishan for Kate and I. Her father really wanted me to visit the village where he himself grew up from. Before him, his father lived there. And before that, his father lived there. The rural village was roughly only 30 minutes away and he told me when he lived there, there was a community of 200 people. Now, today since he still owns the original home, the village only has about 10 people. Upon arriving there, I noticed that the village has been kept in the same shape as it was 100 years ago just like how it was founded. The houses were extremely old, limited running water, and poor infrastructure. (see photos). Her father wanted to bring me here to pay respect to the Lin ancestors. Upon entering the ... read more
