"What we do for ourselves dies with us; What we do for others remains and is immortal." Albert Pike I came across this quote on a volunteer website I think it’s time to introduce you to some of my Chinese second family who are making me feel at home here and keeping me entertained. Some of you have asked me what I do at the weekend and in the evenings but to be honest there always seems to be something going on and sometimes I am actually glad to find I have a day to myself. Guozhi is the Director of VSO China but spent 3 years studying in San Francisco. His wife Jian Wen is a dance teacher - would you believe it! They took me to see a contemporary dance workshop at the wonderful ... read more

We flew direct from Washington, D.C. to Beijing. Our stewardess was really nice and told me we would fly over the North Pole which was so exciting!!! The North Pole was cloudy, but parts of Siberia weren't. Soooo cool, I want to backpack through Siberia some day!... read more

‘You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take’. Wayne Gretzky Thought for the week, nothing to do with China - just struck a chord……………if you don’t try …………… A short pause since my last blog, but then I have been busy climbing a mountain the height of Ben Nevis, so that’s my excuse. And I am continuing the exercise and my conversion to “Chineseness” by starting Tai Chi classes which I take in the park early Saturday mornings. In the same local spirit I have bought my own personal chopsticks to use at home - how Chinese is that! A favourite official phrase here is ‘ ………with Chinese characteristics’. This can be used to refer to all kinds of things and I have decided to apply this to my apartment - so it is ... read more

Unfortunately, I didn't make it to this morning's trip to the Beijing Dragon Seal Wine Museum due to a bit of dehydration and a touch of exhaustion. However, I made sure not to miss out on lunch; the famous Peking Duck. As it turns out, this duck is sliced into ninety pieces as part of the service, and each piece is masterfully cut off the duck in less than 3 minutes by a highly experienced server. The duck was extremely crispy on the outside, cooked to tender perfection on the inside, and served with a rich, delicious sauce among other accompaniments. What I probably liked most about the meal was that the duck was put out with both flour and corn pancakes, a variety of vegetables, thick sauce, and the understanding that you should eat it ... read more

Well I have to get into training for my Taishan challenge so I started with an outing to Mr Mao’s Chestnut Orchard, run by the Beijing Hikers, and a very international group they turned out to be. We had to take a coach an hour and a half north of the city. A young guy from USA sat next to me, he was in China for 6 months working on an animation film, but I also talked to French, Dutch, Australian, Malaysian, Chinese and English with a mixture of tourists, embassy staff, teachers and IT experts, so it was a very multi-cultural day. It was incredibly well organised, right down to providing sun tan lotion - and yes we did need it - walking sticks, water and chocolate biscuits. They even tied red ribbons to the ... read more

Just so you don’t think it’s all sightseeing and eating perhaps I should tell you what I am actually out here for ……….. My placement employer is the Beijing Volunteer Federation and they are in partnership with United Nations Volunteers on a project called Spring Shoots. This is a response to their success in using volunteers at the Beijing Olympics (400,000 of them! one thing China is not short of is people). The idea being that this volunteer workforce could be mobilised to make a difference through projects which are for public benefit rather than just on high profile sporting events. The official bit - "to develop Volunteerism 4 Development model projects, leaving a legacy of good practice which other projects can follow in future". So I work with grass roots, not-for-profit organisations, building their ... read more

I haven’t told you yet about my first visits to the two most iconic cultural sites in China- The Forbidden City & The Great Wall. There is something rather special about seeing these places for yourself, so familiar from books and films and tourist guides, there’s nothing like the real thing. I went to the Forbidden City back in February and it was bitterly cold, which may have coloured my initial response, because I was actually a little disappointed. It is so empty and austere. It is huge in scale and grandeur and overwhelming in its own sense of importance. Courtyard follows on from courtyard, gateway after gateway, vast expanses of cold, unforgiving and uninterrupted grey stone - no trees were allowed because they would have made it easier for intruders (or would be escapees?). Everything ... read more

‘May you enjoy good fortune as expansive as the Eastern sky and longevity as long as the Southern mountain’ Well I didn’t think I would come to Beijing and meet an angel but this week I was invited to attend a Chinese wedding and thinking it might be very different I was pleased to go - and there I met an angel, well 2 actually. In the absence of cute and appropriately aged relations these two got hired and paid for their services and with one wedding every half an hour and the next one waiting in the courtyard -they are doing very nicely thank you! Fortunately it was a beautiful sunny morning and there is no tradition of not seeing the bride beforehand, so bride and groom and guests all casually mingled waiting for their ... read more

Well to make up for what the apartment lacks I shall introduce you to some of the wonderful food, which I know is of great interest to some of you ……. So far, I have tried Sichuan, Mongolian, Taiwanese hotpot, traditional Chinese banquet, Muslim quarter, Yunnan (South China) ethnic restaurant, many and varied noodles, dumpling bar ……….(and Italian at the opening of a new restaurant) I cannot believe the number of restaurants and yet you still see queues for the favourites. They are around every corner and down the smallest alley or lurking in a dark corner of a ‘hutong’ and half I would probably not dare to go into without my Chinese buddies. They each seem to have their own system of ordering and thank goodness for the ones with pictures - but most just ... read more

Well I know some of you can’t wait to see my 5* accommodation, so brace yourself and follow the picture story …………. I haven’t seen any area of Beijing yet that is not built up, the roads are huge and crossing is at your peril. There is a series of 4 ring roads with huge pedestrian crossing bridges - which turn into mini shopping malls as guys set up their wares on a blanket on the floor absolutely anywhere.(why anyone wants to squat on the floor and buy a dodgy MP3 player on an overpass in the biting wind I do not know but they seem to?) My main street has a Macdonalds on one side and KFC on the other (but no chips!) and a very expensive department store with designer labels and cosmetics. But ... read more
