Night train to Xi’an, full of hustle and bustle and I don’t know how we would have ended up in the right bunks without our Chinese support team - but slept amazingly well, until the Chinese muzac at 6.30am. 4* hotel - what luxury - had to make the most of the last bath I will see in a long time! Then off to meet the Terracotta Warriors, yes all of them, and there are thousands, a stunning sight. Stopped off at the hot springs which we would dearly have liked to dip into - it was very cold and raining at this point. This was home to history ancient and modern. The Emperors used this summer palace and there is a legend of the most beautiful woman in China who of course caused all kinds ... read more

March 12, 2010 Ellen and I are nearing the end of our two week stint here at Beijing Normal University; classes have been completed and there remain some last minute add ons… meetings with some students seeking some help in planning their future, a session this evening with the social work students association, and the two way pass of paper between ourselves (we hand over notes from our lectures) and the administration here (they hand over an envelope of 100 RMB notes, with a youthful Mao’s visage.) And of course, the necessary farewell dinner, likely to be held at some nearby restaurant, in a private dining room with many plates on offer. The flight over went well, smoothed no doubt by the availability of 335 movies on the in-flight entertainment system. Watching Slim Pickens make his ... read more

Did I say it wasn't that cold? - I lied! We have had snow this week and all my thermals, scarves, extra goves etc. came to good use. Even the trees are wearing winter coats and the lake in the park is frozen over. This week I have spotted ............. a whole group of people linedancing in the park in the dark while the security policeman sang along, and a girl acrobat all in white entertaining in a restaurant, balanced just by her mouth while juggling mats on both hands and both feet ! Tried Mongolian food last night - potatoes instead of rice - hurrah! We were treated to Mongolian throat music and then birthday cake courtesy of some other guests. So just the usual sort of thing really! I explored Tian'amen Square with its ... read more

What a time to arrive, the very beginning of the Year of the Tiger, so I can get my teeth into this adventure. Egg fried rice for breakfast, jasmine tea - and if you look closely at the pic you may see some of that food is still wriggling! Staying in a hotel to start with and flat hunting for my own little nest. But I already have a desk and an office and a new boss - Mr Guo. His first words were to remark that I looked too young for my age - flattering possibly but not very PC - they are very direct. His second question was whether I was good at drinking! I was given a very thorough tour of the offices and every picture, prize and poster was explained - don't ... read more

What other city in the world can you tour a royal palace, eat grasshoppers on a stick, and have your own following of paparazzi...all on the same day? Ah, Beijing. The longer we're here, the more this crazy city grows on us!! As usual, we've crammed so much into the past two days, it's hard to know where to begin! Yesterday was actually a pretty chill day for us. Sherpa's grueling hike left us pretty wiped and our legs were screaming for mercy when we woke up. The sky was gray and the Arctic winds were howling through the city, kicking up dust and debris like a Chinese hurricane. We took care of a few necessary evils such as laundry, hunting down an ATM, and booking our onward train tickets to Xi'an...which is going to be ... read more

If You Won’t Go into the Tiger’s Lair, How Can You Catch The Cubs? HAN DYNASTY PROVERB, 202 B.C. - A.D. 220: “NOTHING VENTURED NOTHING GAINED.” As I wait for my connecting flight beneath the towering canopy of Dubai International Airport I welcome you to my Beijing blog, “He Who Dares”. Accompanied by an overpriced bottle of imported beer and the back of my boarding pass, I begin what I hope will be an honest and entertaining account of my pathway to China. Throughout the past six months family and friends have raised questions concerning my career path upon graduation, “Where and what next?”, they would ask candidly. My standard answer would begin by referring to arduous and lengthy graduate scheme applications within the banking and finance sector followed by, “the application process is very competitive, ... read more

A Journey of a Thousand Li Begins from Under One’s Feet. LAO-ZI: THE TAO AND ITS VIRTUE C. SIXTH CENTURY B.C. “Do not sneeze, cough or form any bodily gesture that may alert the swine flu police”, I warned myself upon entering China. Striding past equally dreary traveller’s en route to swine flu screening and customs I gave my nose one final blow, those around me scattered in search of germ free air. I felt relieved, if slightly embarrassed, but pleased that I would no longer be competing with half of China for the square of carpet ahead. After five minutes of walking, without any pushing or shoving those in front began to slow and those around me, with much trepidation moved ... read more

We arrived at the train station, ready for a shower after our wading experience leaving Xi’an. All that stood in our way was a taxi ride to the hotel on the northwest side of Beijing. We followed the signs to the longest taxi line I have seen. And, of course, people were crowding in a large group at the end of the line, and then merging into two side by side lines. I was pushy. I learned you have to be to get anywhere in China. My Chinese friend Cathy taught me this while waiting for a table at a busy restaurant in Chinatown, Chicago. In this case, somehow, I was way more pushy than Eric because I turned around and he towered over a group of tiny women, about five deep behind me. There was ... read more

Staci and I were planning on going to the vegetarian restaurant last night, but as we were headed out the door, a fellow teacher, came our way and invited us out to dinner with a few others. It's so nice to be here with a big group as it allows us to make friends and experience being in a foreign place with like-minded adventurers. We had a bit over an hour to spare before take off, so the two of us headed out to get some bubble tea from this place we've seen next to our hotel. They had a small menu translated in English and we ordered a pineapple tea and a blueberry tea. It turned out not to be the type of bubble tea we were expecting, yet still delicious. Crushed ice with flavored ... read more
