Well, it is my final blog from Beijing and if there is one thing I will always think of when I look back on my year it will be the extremes and opposites of life in China. Behind every glossy department store is a narrow street bursting with local life, vegetables being sold on the pavement alongside myriad tiny independent stores, all thriving. The vendors sell baked sweet potatoes and corn on the cob next to towers of cardboard and plastic bottles, hoarded on the back of a bicycle cart for the few pennies they bring. In one area the rubbish will be piled high and happily ignored by people perched on kid sized plastic chairs in the gutter, eating noodles or standing on the street corner with skewers of meat, yet around the corner an ... read more

Nowadays so many things produced in China. Sopping in China mast to be just amazing but in reality, so many goods produced in China, which are cheap in Europe or in US are more expensive in China. Some company produce staff in China but most of their commodities is not available at Chinese market. Some time it is really surprising that some of Chinese stuff is cheaper to buy outside China than in China, especially if you are tourist and you are planning to buy something during your trip. When you buying something in China it’s always lottery, some time you even can expect what happens with your staff in few days later. Everywhere fake staff… Sometime it just unbelievable, fake electronic, photo equipment and even toilet paper. Friend of mine, bought fake chilly paper at ... read more

This week we have to work in groups. It supposed to be four groups, but for some rezone our group split to two. It was very kind of Jason invite me in there group. After long discussion, we decided to make video clip and ask people to sing popular Chinese song without words. I mean that song is without words. We discussed how we going to do that and where. All my function in clip making was to be there, Simone was with camera ,Jason with sound recorder, Bohan was talking with people and me and Berta were frizzing and boring. It is difficult work in a team, which actually not a team, especially in international team. Sorry Jason, we just live in different reality and think in different way. Anyway it was useful, I sow ... read more

Good news. I bought my camera! Canon 60D. I really like it. Early Saturday morning I went to park, to take some video about morning exercises. I never seen anything like that before. It just amazing. Early morning but all the parks are full of people and they are doing tai chi, playing, dancing with swaps, shouting, and singing. It is going on something interesting in each bush. Wau. I wont to join them. But…The video. I recorded lots of stuff. I took an interview from one English speaking guy in a park. But I was using my new camera first time and I didn’t record it. Next morning I spend in a park again. It was brilliant. And this time I recorded everything. Then I was editing all the night. Sorry Berta, I know that ... read more

It was one more frustrating week. Some people don’t understand me because of language, some just because they are so different. I thought what the hell I’m doing here? I lost my student card, key from my room, some money. And the lift didn’t go when I’m coming in. I thought that I’m ready for any challenges when I came here. I have to speak with DJ… ... read more

Today was the first day that I felt like I was going to a home…my home. Today was also the first day where I had countless conversations, ranging from a comical phone call in class about the airport, to a conversation about stocks and my passion for JP Morgan to my host dad, after seeing him look at charts, in Chinese. We both laughed about our losses from 2008, and I shared with him my top stock picks from both the Chinese and American exchange. I went to the gym with my mom, and we actually talked half of the time during our walk there! It is still difficult to know exactly what they say in response, but I am at the point where I can infer what they say if they speak slowly and directly ... read more

Looking at my last few weeks and I really can’t believe it, it has all suddenly speeded up (as people warned me it would). So how much more can I fit in before this weird and wonderful year comes to an end and I land back in Britain with a bump………... I have experienced a Christmas, New Year and birthday here, Chinese style, with a little help from my friends and now we are looking forward to Spring Festival (what in UK we call Chinese New Year) and the frenzy for 2011 the Year of the Rabbit is building up here, just as Christmas does for us at home. I have just returned from a VSO business trip with Sifan, to Sichuan – the home of famously spicy food (not my thing unfortunately). You cannot go ... read more

My friends and family, It has been nearly a week since I have arrived here, and my conception of China has changed dramatically. In class today I was finally able to understand the words that were coming out of my teachers mouth...sort of. Our pronunciation class was tragic for my teacher, as she realized that the mistakes that she thought to be cute yesterday are going to be a brutal war that she has to deal with this whole semester. I move in to my host families home tomorrow. They don't speak english, are retired, and smoke. My room is also 14m squared, at least I think. The sheet for my host mom says that she exercises. Something tells me that it isn't the conventional eliptical and weights type of deal that I am use to, ... read more

Tonight, I ate an insect. Actually four insects. We went to a homestay families house for dinner (not mine) and they served delicious food, as well as the insects. I had to try it because I can't say no to them. So I tried it....well it was like a crunchy mushroom, not bad but the legs and all are out of control! Then the wife came in and gave me another...ate it...then I asked how they were prepared and she gave me 2 more. I had 4 insects! The family loved me, even though I couldn't say more than thank you and delicious. He gave me the big head of the table chair, the most wine (with the biggest glass while giving the ladies a shot glass size glass) and invited me back anytime. I have ... read more

I had my first Chinese meal on the plane, fish and rice. It was great. To my dismay, the person next to me had hers replaced. I suspect because it may not have been cooked correctly, but at that point I finished mine and it was too late to check. First lesson of the day - check food. I had tea with the meal because it is smart to boil the water; I feel like I will be having a lot of tea. After sleeping about 8 out of the 12 hours in the plane, I was picked up at 5:45 AM my time by my RA and his friend, who live in the dorm I'm in for the next week. It was great to ask questions, and immediately have new friends. As we got into ... read more
