Everybody wanted chili's, so good. then we tried to exchange money in america but nobody was at the stand. So instead we went on the china plane. It was fun a lady named lisa managed to get us in 1st class it was fun. But when we landed we had problems, when we went to the hotel they said they did not get our reservation so instead we had to sleep in the hotel office. Day 2 has been an adventure. First we had to change hotels because where we were staying only locals stay and that is not meant for us. Where we are now is a lot better. We have an enclosed shower. Which is the best thing ever. Only problem is it smells weird. My mom says they have a sewage issue. Thats an understatement. I didnt realize your not suppose to put toilet paper in the toilet. ( why call it toilet paper) You put it in the trash can next to the toilet. I guess a country of a billion people the system cant handle all that paper.... read more

Food is very interesting in China. We are forced to remember that we are not in America. We are in another country so the food tastes different. It's just different. We have been playing it safe and eating at the school canteen, KFC, McDonalds, Subways, Yoshinoya- a large Japanese food chain, and restaurants that have those delicious noodles in soup with chicken or beef and veggies which is great. So of course our taste buds are in shock and even those who aren't picky eaters are saying --- WHAT IS THAT? But overall the food in China is great! We love the spinning tables with everything in the center. It gives everyone a chance to taste everything on the table. And no there are no folks and spoons unless you're eating soup. We're in China. The ... read more

OMG!!!!!!! This is an interesting trip. I never thought in a million years I would leave the country. If I did I always thought it would be to Europe but instead I chose China and what a choice that was. So far it has been nothing but people staring and talking in a language I cant understand at all. The people are freindly but there language is not. I feel like a fish out of water flopping around on a hot ground. Confused as hell. The hotel that we are staying in is not meant for foreighners. Nothing seperating the toilet from the shower. So when you take a shower so does the entire bathroom. Very different but i can deal. No ice everything we drink is lukewarm but I can deal. Nothing is in english. ... read more

Joshua Stahl Int395 Journal #3 Dear Journal, The day started off with a clear indication that our work was being followed up, as cold calls were clearly being made to America. Obi and I walked into the office, and heard one of the five main English speakers, Jack, in the middle of a phone call. The phone call began aggressively with; “Hello, I am a representative from a big Chinese shoe factory in China. Do you like Chinese shoes?” As soon as Jack hung up the phone, I immediately approached him with suggestions for improvement. Forgetting everything I learned about “face”, I asked him: “Jack, would you mind if I gave you a few suggestions?” And with a nod I continued, “Next time you are on a phone relax, and take a step back. A sunny and warm day in Beijing. I went for a run this morning with the gentleman who's van we will be borrowing for our journey. He has been such a blessing and is having it gone over again prior to our arrival in the States next week. As described by him it is a solid vehicle. Garage kept by one elderly owner for 18 years, it is a 1990 Ford Econline 150 conversion van with 86,000 miles. Our friend reaffirmed today that he hopes we can help added 10-15,000 miles to odometer! God is so good to our family to bless with such great friends!!! ... read more

With typical fury our neighborhood celebrated the Lantern Festival with full gusto. Honestly, you get rather numb to all the fireworks. What I find really scary are the floating lanterns in a dense and dry city of 17 million. These a light, paper, hot air balloons that are powered by a block of flammable wax the size of a cellphone. You light it on fire and then set it loose. The wax burns and the air in the paper canopy heats up sending the burning block of wax about 100-150ft into the air. From here it floats away ... This year it was freaky watching this burning lanterns float past above our 17 story buildings wondering ... what it the paper catches fire and drops a ball of burning wax on to a top of a ... read more
