Hello Everyone! This is Jennifer again, and we are back from over a week of vacation as our students were taking the College Entrance Test (the Gao Kao). I know it has been a long time since I have written. I am still angry about the other blog website access being “taken” away from us, www.blogger.com, so part of my absence has been some sort of rebellion at having to start up again on a different website. But, I have missed writing and I do have some great things to tell you about... so here I am! We just got back from a mini-trip which took us from Shanghai to Hangzhou and then on to our ultimate destination of HuangShan (Yellow Mountain). The purpose of starting in Shanghai was for me to find some shorts ... read more

so, the first month of my stay in china is almost over. it has gone by so fast, and i am sad to see my friends leave. i will miss carolyn and hayley a lot and am glad we became such good friends while they were here. we plan on having chinese dinners at school so we keep in touch and practice our chinese... and eat! tonight we are going to have kao ya (roast duck) for dinner to celebrate carolyn's birthday, which isn't until she is back in the states but we want a reason to celebrate. this weekend we are traveling to suzhou, a small city outside of Shanghai. it is renowned for its beauty, often refered to as heaven on earth. it has many beautiful gardens and traditional southern architecture. i am excited ... read more

Xuijiahui has become familiar and people have found their favorite places to go for restaurants, cafes, bakeries, xiao long bao. This past week in cooking we made a delicious sweet and sour chicken that I definitely plant to make at home. On Thursday night the SJTU students threw a welcoming party for us at the Minhang campus, the main SJTU campus (I am at Xinhui). We sang the Ramblin Wreck song and put on a couple other performances; including a Backstreet boys song (which they all knew) and one of us even break danced. They provided most of the entertainment with some karaoke, band performances, a song from High School musical (some fo the volunteers told me they learned several of the musical's skits in P.E.) and games. Its interesting interacting with people your own age ... read more

Last Sunday we went to the Science Museum and the Zoo. The science museum wasn't very exciting, we went mostly to experience the earthquake simulation room, but arrived between show times and weren't interested in staying around for two hours for the next show. We went to the Zoo instead, which was a nice ride into Hefei's suburbs. The Zoo was huge, and not aweful like the stories you typically hear of zoos in Asia. At the entrance, there are a ton of peacocks roaming around free, they were so beautiful. We saw tigers, pandas, lions, bears, kangaroos, ostriches, giraffes, zebras, hippos... It was a huge place. I think we were a greater spectacle than the animals though, many people stopped to look at the foreigners walk by and one guy even stopped and asked to ... read more

At the main entrance, we had to pay an entrance fee of 115Y (student discount) while Cherry and Se Young also had to pay 80Y more for a cable car ticket. They didn't like the idea of hiking all the way up the western (front) path with their back packs. The other two girls Se Won and Helen decided to take the cable car after 5 minutes of hiking up stairs. Joey led us for a while at a decent pace, each of us sporting 2.5 Liters of water and all of our other extra weight! It was going to be a workout, but I was extremely excited. We tried to speed past group tours (which we didn't see that many of at first) and didn't stop for the first 30 minutes. Our first break was ... read more

This weekend we decided to go to Huangshan - Yellow Mountain - a very famous scenic/cultural location for a majority of Chinese people and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We would leave Friday, stay in Tunxi (an hour from Huangshan) for the night, then hike up Huangshan, stay at a hotel on the mountain, and then hike down. We had 4 guys and 4 girls (more inclined to use the cable-car). Groups of four make transportation and accommodations, SO much easier! Oh and as you'll notice in the pictures, I got my first haircut in China, they tried to charge me 85Y, but I bargained them down to 30Y (who knew you even had to bargain for haircuts!?). It was decent, but had to finish it when I got back to my room with a razor, ... read more

Yesterday was a busy day. After a full day of class, my tutors met me to go to the bank so i could exchange money for our shopping venture on Sunday. We walked there, it was hot, i was not wearing appropriate shoes and we weren't sure how far the bank was. So we kept walking and walking and walking... we passed many banks, but there was only one I that would exchange my travelers cheques. Despite the pain i endured to get some renminbi, I was glad to have a look at another part of the city. At some of the intersections here they have big circular walk ways raised above the street so that pedestrians don't have to wait for traffic to cross. We finally made it to the bank after about an hour ... read more

The past two days have been very busy, so I will do my best to recap for you all. Here goes: Yesterday we were officially able to leave our house and go out into the city of Hefei! But first we had class. The building I have class in is on the other side of campus and takes about 15 minutes to walk there. It was so refreshing to see people and get out. The campus is huge, and the dorms are so cramped. We are lucky to have an apartment and most of us have single rooms. The Chinese students live six to a room, its very tight living quarters with very little privacy. Our class is on the sixth/top floor of one of the foreign language buildings. Its quite a climb. Zhu Chen, my ... read more

Today is the last day of quarantine. It is beautiful outside so I will likely sit outside and soak up some sun :) Last night, Hayley, Carolyn and I went on a walk around our apartment to find the frogs that croak all night. They are located in a pond surrounded by bushes so we were unable to actually see them, but since we were out we decided we would try to get a look at the city. It felt like we were doing something dangerous since we have been quarantined for so long. We kept arriving at dead ends and locked gates, before we decided to go down the path beside our apartment. On our way down the path we found a couple making out, apparently our part of campus is the most private and ... read more
