Déjà Vu It wasn’t until this trip was well under way that I realized my sneezing was not from allergies, but from a cold that was spreading around the Shanghai Summer Program students. The worst of it hit me on the mountain, making the climb extremely uncomfortable. I tackled Philmont with mononucleosis, though, so I wasn’t going to let a cold hold me back. Getting There The bus trip went by pretty fast since I slept through most of it. I was awake for the last hour or so, so I got to see some of the sights along the way. I noticed several small villages surrounded by rice fields. The land was very uneven, but that didn’t stop these people from planting rice on every possible spot that they could flatten. I wish the bus ... read more

Thank you for all your kind posts and helpful advise! All will be considered in our journey outside of Beijing this August... We are intrigued by the China countryside, and our lonely planet lists some small towns in the south to explore...Has anyone traveled to Honcun, Xidi, Nanping, and further on in Jiangxi, and the Wolong mountains.... Would love to hear some more information about lodging (?) and experiences!... read more

Well, I don't even know where to start. I suppose that adding "chrono" to the beginning of "logical" would make the appropriate word; however, there's so much to say that it will be difficult to stick to that. I have returned from my escapades in Shanghai and Huang Shan. Granted, I returned the Sunday before last (May 4), but I had to rent an apartment, do some work for my internship, final exams, presentations, and projects. so it has taken me a while to post this. My apologies (especially to you, Andy - I will be make this my first priority over my grades next time). That being said, I hope that I am able to paint this picture as well as I had planned 2 weeks ago. Shanghai When people say, "I love Shanghai," they're ... read more

Ok, so it's been a while In my defense we have been working really hard. Things are beginning to quiet down now as we head for the end of term. Unfortunately, the last week is "promotion week" a polite way of saying....we can send you to any school, anywhere, any age and you'll teach a lesson that'll make Aston Language Centre look good!! So I came to China with the Grinch thinking that this year he'd have nothing to complain about. China - non religious country - right. Ignores Christmas - WRONG!! At least the tat only arrived in December not right after the kids go back to school in September (like the UK) And trust me when I say tat, I mean garish, tacky, toxic and likely to break before you get it home. The ... read more

hey! so i've been slack on updating this thing, largely because china decided to cull my access to wordpress. it's hard to maintain a blog in this particular location. anyway since hefei we've been slowly adapting to life in china. i've learned that you can convey pretty much anything simply by pointing. i never really knew what a powerful linguistic tool pointing can be up until now. just two days ago i pointed my way into some custom picture frames, which i picked up about 30 minutes ago. a few days ago lj & i decided to finally walk up to the river. we went down the sketchiest alley i have seen so far. this particular alley seemed to thrive exclusively by the lucrative trade of forging large ship anchors, and, true to chinese safety standards, ... read more

Hefei was a sweet day trip. It would have been more comfortable had someone thought to check the weather report - it rained for the better part of the day and my one sweater and thin jacket was not up to the task of keeping anything warm. BUT the day was nice. We were met at the train station by Ling, who is Sunny and Wendy's friend and we then walked to a shopping street which closely resembled the one in Huainan. We went to lunch at this restaurant, which Dave has already described basically to perfection. I filled up on rice because it was the most palatable option in the offering, but even then I had to put spicy tofu on it. Do not be deceived by the sound of 'spicy tofu' - think 'spicy ... read more

At the offer of visiting the legendary Yellow mountain we could not decline. We bought the tickets and endured our first Chinese train ride in the sleeper berths. These consisted of six beds per unit with small seats and tables in the hallway. Having the option to stretch out is fantastic, I tell ya. I let Dave sleep on my lap and rest his legs while I took in the Chinese country side which was comprised mainly of micro-farming plots and concrete ghettos. I was told that many of the buildings are actually pretty new, but no one keeps them up and they all just seem to fall to piece after about 10 years. This is the case of our apartment - the inside is completely fine, but the outside looks like a concentration camp. Anyways, ... read more

we went to hefei yesterday to visit friends. the train ride was only 1.5 hours and passed quickly enough. hefei is a lot like huainan, only bigger. i got my hair cut and ate this tasteless gelatinous soup that was roughly the same consistency as snot and had little wet rice balls in it. we went to the park and got on a ferris wheel. unlike rides back home, you can stay on the ferris wheel for as long as you want. which is kind of funny because the ferris wheel is largely unoccupied during the day, so for a paltry 5 yuen you can basically keep this giant piece of machinery in motion for hours for your own personal amusement. it was cold and wet yesterday; i wish it had been warmer. the restaurant where ... read more

so they sell baijo in squeeze bottles here for something like 2 yuen, which i think is somewhere in the 20 cents cdn vincinity. this stuff is fermented rice wine, usually 110 proof, and tastes terrible. my first night here i got suckered into drinking a large glass of it, but have fortunately only had to hit up the squeeze bottle once after a late night run to the 'big profit center'. anyway, here's a picture of what the south end of our city looks like at the foot of the mountain. they seem to be tearing down the remains of a small village (that people still live in) in order to build god knows what. the results is miles of brick rubble and trees. we found some graves way up in the mountain while exploring, ... read more
