I have been fortunate to have visited this wonderful country twice before. What makes it different now? Our friend, Roath, who was our guide on our first trip here, is now a wife and mother of two children. On our last visit here, she was still a single lady and joined us for dinner at the fancy French restaurant in our hotel. Before I tell you more about this interesting and changing city, let me tell you about that dinner. We were staying at the best hotel resort in Siem Reap, and invited Roath to join us. She had never eaten French food before, and was most pleased to be invited to join us. But she was not treated very nicely by the staff. Perhaps they perceived she did not "belong" there, since she was one ... read more

When I first listened or watched to the news and heard Cambodia, Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, and genocide, it made me sick. They ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, and were autocratic, xenophobic, paranoid, and repressive. The genocide was part of their social engineering. The resulting deaths from diseases like malaria, and the Khmer Rouge's ethnic cleansing, for lack of a better word, took its toll on minorities and the less fortunate. Fast forward to about 2004, on our first trip to SE Asia, specifically in Bangkok. We were eating at a little noddle stand in a small grocery store in Bangkok when we struck up a conversation with another American. He stated, matter of factly, that Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia was the greatest, most interesting place he had ever experienced. While we ... read more

Pada rozhodnutie, idem do tych predrazenych chramov (domaci maju vstup gratis). Vcera zjednavat nik nechcel. Ranajky vybavene v pojazdnom stanku . Doprava v pohode, vsetci jazdia ohladlpune. Predak listok je od komplexu cca 7km . Nebolo treba kukat ani do mapy, stacilo sledovat tour busy a tuktukarov. Parkujem bicykel (nieco ako nasa liberta), zamykam ho a sup ho kupit listok. Kopa okienok, rozdelenych podla toho aky chce clovek vstup (1,3,7) Najviac ludi pri jednodennych listkoch ale vsetko to boli busove tour. Tie uplne mixnute, stary lude, mlady lude (zvacska uk). Idem k poslednemu okienku, tam nikoho. Fotka, vytlacenie listka, platba kartou a hotovo.

No ani o 10.30 (odchod busu) nik. Nakonec chlapik co to vybavoval ma ukludnoval, pick up je tu zachvilu. Jasne, jasne. I have been meaning to get this blog written for some time, but time flies… and life gets away. Often when scrolling through Facebook and Trip Advisor I see people wanting to volunteer in orphanages or do some form of paying it forward on their upcoming trip. I, too, am one of these people. I have done it all over the last 12 years of South East Asian travel. I have participated in Orphanage visits (bad me), raised money for a house to be built for a single Mum of 5 kids who was living on a stilted piece of tin with dirty old pieces of cloth as her walls; I’ve raised money to buy school bikes and school ‘packs’ and I have taken Cambodian children on a school excursion to Angkor Wat and the local ... read more

Four days in Siem Reap was very relaxing , July is a humid time of year to visit but the rain was kept to a minimum , The Angkor Museum in Siem Reap is worth a visit to gain insight to what you will see in Angkor Wat , Pub Street in the evening is abuzz with restaurants , food stalls ,markets and bars . Angkor Wat was a lot bigger than we realized and a couple of days is recommended to cover the main sights and temples , there are 2 circuits , the large and small circuits , the small is best covered by a Tuk Tuk and the larger by car , both require the majority of the day as there are numerous sites to see , there are a lot of stairs ... read more

There is such beauty and unspoken magic roping around Siem Reap. Of course, Siem Reap is home to the temple complex, Angkor Wat; considered to be the most impressive monument in the world. Angkor Wat. It costs $37 for a day ticket to see Angkor Wat. A useful tip is to get your ticket after 5pm on the day before so you’re able to see it for sunset and have the full next day. We hired a tuk tuk for the day for $30 for both days which is expensive but our driver Peter was fantastic and gave us a full tour and it’s worth the money. Angkor Wat complex covers the size of a small city, littered with a variety of stunning religious sculptures and architecture. The structures date back to the 11th century (close ... read more
