Woolly says – An overnight storm had cleared the air and as our tuk tuk cruised through the tree lined roads it was lovely to smell the scents of freshly watered foliage. We had booked our trip for the day to enable us to see some of the other temples that come within the Angkor Archaeological Park and the same admission ticket that we had purchased for Angkor Wat itself (given the amount of research we had undertaken regarding the tickets here we will give you a mini overview at the end of this adventure). As our smiley driver pulled up at the first destination I clambered down from our vehicle and took in the magnificence that greeted me. My eyes were confronted by a bridge lined with heads with a wonderful gate house at the ... read more

Woolly says – With our tummies pleasantly full we climbed back on board and continued through the shady roads, as we bumped along avoiding the puddles there was an air of expectancy and excitement as to what we would be seeing next. Chau Say Tevoda didn’t have quite the same impact as our mornings finds but climbing down from our carriage I raced over to take a closer look, built in the mid 12th century, it is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu with unique types of female sculptures of devatas enshrined in it. Although much smaller the sculptures were in abundance and had been restored to a very high standard. Prior to 2000 the temple was in ruins, in fact much of it was in the Siem Reap River, the work was carried ... read more

Woolly says – We had little or no plan and no particular place to go, expect to explore a little more of the centre of Siem Reap. We’d passed over the river several times in tuk tuks and with it’s huge shady tree’s it made for a pleasant walk into the centre of the city. The water might be brown with green weeds, but the bridges were lovely although in need or a coat of paint, each one was decorated with pictures, certainly the best river walk we have found on this trip. I trotted across one of the many bridges and headed towards the royal gardens, from a distance they looked wonderful but on closer inspection they were rubbish strewn with broken benches, sad and neglected which seemed a shame. Four giant stone lions guarded ... read more

Woolly says – I’d been up since dawn and having crept onto the balcony I was dismayed to see that the sky was full of clouds, I tried blowing to see if I could chase them away, but they remained in place, I ambled back inside to tell Jo the bad news, for some reason she didn’t seem pleased to see me and merely grunted at my sad tidings. Who would be pleased to see him at 5.30am! Having listened to his sighs for as long as I could bear I climbed out of my comfy bed to access the weather conditions. Woolly says – The clouds hadn’t budged a single inch and as Jo checked the weather forecast I felt a sense of despondency, was this going to be the same troublesome greyness ... read more

Woolly says – Our last day in Phnom Penh hadn’t gone according to plan, having set off for the palace once again, I had my paws crossed that this time we would gain entrance. Given the queues and coaches outside my pace increased to get a place in the line. As we stood waiting to enter I peered through the gates and imagined the delights inside, which is when I noticed a guard speaking to each person who then left the queue and started walking away, this didn’t bode well. As he reached the people directly in front of us I heard the words closed and my heart sank. It appeared that it was Buddha’s birthday and rather than allow us into the palace to celebrate the great occasion the gates were going to remain shut, ... read more

Today is temples day, and involves a very early start, with a 5 am departure to reach Angkor Wat before sunrise. Our driver is early so we are the first people to arrive at the temple. We cross the weird squishy squashy bridge over the moat by torch light and wait for the sun to rise over a lake full of water lilies, so you can see the temple reflected in the lake. It certainly is a beautiful sight. After sunrise, we explore Angkor Wat, including climbing to the top of the Bakan (inner sanctuary). This involves negotiating a flight of around 60 very steep wooden steps. The final step is particularly deep, and as I climb, I hear an almighty tear. There is a large rip in my gap year trousers and I’m at the ... read more

I have an upset stomach, so opt out of this morning’s activity and chill by the pool instead, which is blissful (notwithstanding the necessity for regular bathroom trips). Meanwhile, the others head to a floating market, which isn’t floating because it’s the dry season. In the afternoon we take a Tuk Tuk to the ticket booth to buy our temple passes. You can buy a day pass from 5 pm the night before and temples don’t close until 5.30, so we manage to squeeze in a quick peak at Angkor Wat. We only manage to cross the moat and pass the gatehouse, but it’s still a sight to behold. Then we return to Pub Street for dinner and for the old man to get squiffy on $1.50 margaritas. We abort a trip to the night market ... read more

We have a lunchtime flight to Cambodia so no need to rush this morning; a leisurely breakfast and one last fight through the Vietnamese traffic to reach the airport. Getting through security takes a while. Carrying epipens means I’m used to my luggage being pulled aside for a visual search. But now my ever increasing fridge magnet collection creates a large black shadow on the x Ray screen which also requires further inspection. The flight to Siem Reap is on time and only takes 70 minutes; just enough time to fill out my life history in triplicate for immigration/customs. Upon arrival we are picked up and taken to our hotel. Child no 1, who is staying at a backpackers hostel in town, is already there, chilling by our pool, drinking wine she has put on our ... read more

Let me start off by saying, I'm sorry! The expectations vs reality of writing blogs posts while moving location every second day was unfortunately, impossible. I have been travelling for 18 days now and have many stories to tell so I am going to do us all a favor and write small, specific, posts rather than one big one. Many of you would have seen my Facebook 'checkins' and Instagram stories and should have some idea of the fun (and not so fun) I've been having. For those few who don't follow me on social media, you are in for a bumpy ride! My aim is to take you from where I left you, sitting and waiting for my train ride up to Sapa, all the way to Siem Reap, where I am now. I've had ... read more
