Tonight is our second night in Battambang (pronounced bat-am-bong). It's a small town fairly and doesn't see too many tourists. We took the public bus here yesterday. It was about a 6 hour ride from Phnom Phen. The ride was okay...and we got to watch super cheesy Chinese Kung-Fu movies dubbed over in Khmer. After we arrived and checked-in we set out for lunch. We went to a local restaurant; the food and fruit shakes were so good. Back at our hotel we were picked up by moto-taxi drivers and we set off for a countryside tour. First we stopped in a small village where they make rice paper wrappers. After that we headed to a village where they make fish paste. Yeah, it smells as good as it sounds... The fermented fish is ground up ... read more

Arriving in Battambang at lunch time dirty, hungover and sweaty we headed straight for our rooms for showers. We booked a hotel called Khemera 1 that had been recommended by Tara from Cambodian Childrens Trust (CCT). For $15 per room a night we had a huge room in a large hotel with a swimming pool, airconditioning, satellite tv and the rest of the modern cons you would expect in a good hotel.... Bargain!! Once we were showered and feeling semi human we caught a tuktuk to the city centre. Battambang is the 2nd largest city in Cambodia.. and I love it! Great place... not as touristy as the rest of SE Asia, but Tara assures me that it is catching up! We had lunch at a place called "White Rose" which comes recommended by everyone... we ... read more

Hey, As I mentioned in my previous blog we left Siem Reap by boat to Battambang in the north of Cambodia. We were told that most boats weren't running because the water level was so low and it would take you ages to get there and also cost 3 times the price of the bus. However, the comments about the scenery totally reversed all the negative comments so we went for it and found a boat that would take use there. It wasn't quite the boat I was expecting, we sat on hard wooden benchs on a very small boat and was slightly crammed in when all the loacals joined us when we went past the floating villages. I don't know how the driver knew which one to stop at but he got it right everytime. ... read more

From Siem Reap to Battambang with boat The route from Siem Reap to Battambang with boat is said to have beautiful scenery and worthwhile trip if you have time. Bus is cheaper and takes only two hour. Boat takes 3 hours in high water time and up to eight hours during low water time. Now is really low water time! The rain season is starting and the river is really low and narrow! This means small boats without any comfort. Only wood benches on both side of the boat. And boat was full of people so no much room to stretch your legs. Most time the boat went up the narrow river to Battanbang. The river was less than 10 m wide and my guess is that the depth was something between 50 cm to 1m. ... read more

The rest of Battambang was uneventful and I gadly said goodbye to the dusty town. I was ready to put my pack down for a bit and catch up with everyone back at the flat. I paid extra for the faster bus back to PP. Unfortunately, it turned out that my bus stopped seven million times before we arrived in PP 6 hours later. I was sick to death of being on a bus and as soon as I strolled through the school gate I felt like I was 'home'. It was a wonderful feeling and when I walked through the school the reception the children gave me brought a tear to my eye. I celebrated my homecoming with Vegemite on cruskits for lunch. The day was not over, I still had to say goodbye to ... read more

Easter Sunday began early as I caught the 7:45 bus out of Sihanoukville bound for PP. I was booked onto seat 9 (seats are highly coveted closer to the front and I have seen massive arguments errupt over seat changes) and so when the lady took my ticket and crossed out number 9 and changed it to number 1 I was worried. Thank goodness no one cared that I had been moved so woohoo more leg room for me! The only bad thing about being up front was that I could see every move the driver made and my hearing is sure to be permanently damaged from the constant blaring of the horn. Mia- you will be able to relate to my new friend in seat number 2 as I writhed loudly through my teeth as ... read more

Confusion Yes, I´m afraid that its true. The old story of checking and double checking again every fact in Asia caught us at last. In the last Blog I mentioned that minibuses to the Cambodia border left 3 times a day from just up the road from the Guesthouse we were in. We went up and checked again there and also with other members of the guesthouse staff and the consensus was that there was indeed one at 0830 or 0900, the other 2 times were perhaps unreliable. We arrived at 0815 to be sure of getting a seat, but this was not necessary as nobody else arrived until nearer 0900 and then just to get us into Cambodia mode the driver of the first van to arrive opened all his doors and cranked up the ... read more

After a great time in Siem Reap, we decided to head off to Battambang, hearing stories about it's sweet fruits and lush rice. “What is this land that flows of milk and honey?” (or fruit and rice) we thought to ourselves. But after struggling to find out what other attractions Battambang held, and finding that we were getting ripped off by the bus company due to limited competition, the feeling for Battambang began to sour. It didn't take long for us to start giving the town a few choice nicknames...”Battambackwater” was my favourite, and I'm sure you can imagine that Phoebe came up with a few relating to the posterior. Just before we got onto the bus, Phoebe threw up...great. We didn't know if it was gastro or just feeling a bit funny from eating so ... read more

Some Li Ail ! 01/17/10 - 01/20/10 I promise you now, this entry will be long... 30hrs of experience upon experience and it is hardly possible to explain without detail. We left Phnom Penh for Battambang at 3:30 on Sunday. This was our first grand adventure on the infamous buses of SE Asia, and of course it was true to its word. Arriving at the bus station, we scrambled to find our bus and climb on board. The bus ride to Battambang was about 5 1/2 hrs of horn honking, weird Cambodian music (much louder than needed), some weird Chinese version of Charlie Chaplin type film, and of course random stops in the middle of nowhere to either pick someone/something up or drop it off and toss it to whoever was waiting for it. Our first experience said it all, ... read more
