We took a long weekend break to Battambang this weekend, a city in a province of the same name. Battambang (pronounced Battambong) is the second largest city in Cambodia after the capital Phnom Penh. Quick warning: I took over 100 photos at the weekend, so I will try my best to filter them but there will be a few... On Friday we got the boat from Siem Reap to Battambang. Upon seeing the boats, we realised we'd been told a couple of porkies at the travel agents, such as you will have an assigned seat (ha ha ha), and there is a toilet on the boat! The journey took around 9 hours (we were told 7), luckily we made a stop about halfway through! And in true Wilkinson style, I had a plastic bag with a ... read more

Burada dalgalar büyümüştü ve arada tekneyi benim heyecanlanmama neden olacak ... read more

As some of you know, I deliberately chose to have a different kind of travel experience this time. I could have seen nearly all of the tourist highlights of Cambodia in three weeks, but I chose to spend time in only two places and soak in the atmosphere a little more. It's been interesting at times here in Battambang....kind of a 'now what do I do?' feeling. Sometimes I think I've totally run out of things to do (most travellers spend one or two nights, whereas I'm here for six). However, by taking my time and seeking out different things to do, I'm finding I'm having some lovely encounters with the locals. Yesterday, I set off to talk to the monks at one of the local monasteries. This isn't entirely unusual, as Lonely Planet suggests three ... read more

I can't write about everything in this blog, so I'm picking just a few experiences to write about in more detail....I hope it's more interesting that way. After a few hours touring the countryside on the back of motorbikes with an Italian guy I met at the morning cooking class (fun, complete with purchasing our ingredients including still flapping fish at the local market), we arrived at a railway crossing. An old guy who proudly told me he was 68 (and looked 102!) offered us and our two 'moto' drivers a beer while the locals assembled our train. Yes, they literally put it together in front of us. Two sets of wheels, looking like gym barbells, a flat crate-like platform made of bamboo and wood, and a motorbike engine attached to the back like an outboard ... read more

I had minor butterflies in my stomach this morning after being collected from my hotel by a mini-van to take me to the bus station on the outskirts of town. I kept telling myself 'Alison, relax, you've done this so many times before, it's no big deal.' But it takes a little time to get back into the swing of independent travel ... up until today, I've done things the very easy way having stuff organised through my hotel. I'm not really a backpacker anymore ... I think I fall into the category they now call 'flashpackers'!?! Still an independent traveller, but with more money to spend and wanting some creature comforts... I've just journeyed 170km by local bus to a town on the other side of the lake called Battambang ... it took 5 hours ... read more
So much roadwork going on - we had to detour around bridges under construction
Lunch stop - I deliberately had a big breakfast, so was happy with my biscuits and water bottle!
The road wasn't as dreadful as expected - they are working to seal it all the way by next year

Greeting all, I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I know that the holiday season is coming to a close. I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas tree’s and New Years fireworks. Although I had a markedly different holiday, it was amazing nonetheless. I spend my Christmas break at the smaller temples of Bantray and West Mabon complex. Christmas in Siem Reap was like a little gift, I went with one new friend (Rashmi - India) and one old friend (Juho - Finland), we all commented on a how a place that is marketed as the Kho Samui of Cambodia could be so quiet and relaxing. The tourist crowds were nowhere to be found. The shops were open and venders eager to share their wares on the slow days. Prices were good and haggling kept to ... read more

Friday 9th January As yesterday was quite hectic, we decided on a more relaxing day. We headed for a stroll crossing to the less busy west bank of the river. On the bridge we gave way to a column of orange clad monks heading in the opposite direction with their begging bowls. Crossing the roads is quite an ordeal. Strangely very few locals seem to cross the main road as pedestrians. We jokingly think that they are born either side of the main road and never cross to the other side unless they own a moped. We strolled a considerable distance ad felt we deserved our breakfast at the White Rose. (It was a little offputting to see a sparrow nibbling on someones's omelette as it sat waiting to be served). Service is a bit slow ... read more

Wednesday 7th Early start, breakfast at 6:30am ready for 7:00am pick up. The pick up by tuk-tuk from the hotel is always included in the very reasonable price of the bus ticket (e.g. Siem Reap to Battambang $6) so you have to be ready at your hotel half an hour before the scheduled bus departure time. The bus normally departs from a dusty depot on the edge of town and each bus company seems to have its own depot. On this occasion the tuk-tuk took us to the bus company office just 500 yards away. Here they indicated for us to get on a local bus to take us out to the depot. They indicated that we should take our rucksacks on board, so heavily laden we mounted the busy bus and had to make our ... read more
