There are two ways of getting from Siem Reap to Battambang, neither of which could be described as quick given the short distance between the two cities (less than 80km as the crow flies). The trouble is that the Tonle Sap lake is in the way, meaning that the bus has to go all the way back west to Sisophon - not far from Poipet and the Thai border - before turning south towards Battambang. The obvious alternative of going across the lake is apparently scenic, but at this time of year we're most of the way through the dry season and the water level is so low the boat keeps bottoming out and reported travel time in the other direction, from a traveller I talked to at the guesthouse in SR, was 11(!) hours. Needless ... read more

Sorry for the long absence...finally we have good enough Internet to update you all! After our sightseeing in Angkor (pics are now up), we caught the boat to Battambang. The boat wasn't quite what we expected and was pretty cramped for a 9 hour journey! However, the route we took was amazing, going through little water ways and floating villages, with some amazing bird watching along the way.  We spent a day here, exploring the surrounding villages with the help of our tuk-tuk driver/travel guide Tony! He took us around rural Cambodia where we got to see the chilli and peanut farms in action, along with a journey on the "bamboo train" (bamboo raft loosely attached to a set of wheels) that the locals use to transport cargo across town! Eventhough we were both feeling quite ... read more

We arrived in Battambang in the evening after a 5 hour bus ride from Phnom Penh, we were the only westerner's on the bus and it was our first local bus ride. We managed to score a mean deal at the Lux Guesthoue $10 a night and the room was up to hotel standards. Battambang is Cambodia's third largest town but it is really quite small so we only planned to stay for two nights. The next morning we organised a tuk tuk for the day, we planned on visiting some hill top temples, check out the country side and ride the bamboo train. The first stop was the infamous bamboo train and we had no idea what we were in for. The "train" was epic, it is made up of two axels that look like ... read more

I decided to cross the Cambodia / Thailand border by bus from Battembang to Bangkok, this only involved a bus to Poipet on the Cambodian side, a ten minute walk across no mans land and through Thai immigration and on to a minibus for six hours straight to Bangkok. This area of no mans land is known as the casino zone, I think because the usual rules do not apply to either country (not that there are many rules in Cambodia) so there are loads of casinos! It was full when I wanted to go so had an extra day in Battembang, a dusty town set on a river to the north west of Cambodia. There isn't much there except for a market and not many westerners, but there is the bamboo train. It's just a ... read more

Battambang There are buses from Siam Reap to Battambang once a day, via Sisophon. In Battambang we stayed in 'The Bungalow' guesthouse. We found it on tripadvisor as it was not in our LP. For $30 per night we got a suite room, spacious with a tv and warm shower. It is about a 5-10minute tuk tuk ride from the Market in the centre. Would recommend it. Is run by a sweet family and the little restaurant there does nice home made Cambodian dishes for about $2 each!! The Bungalow appeared to have it's own Tuk Tuk driver and as we seemed to be two of three/four people staying there we had Sambo at our beck and call! The first day we just looked around the town and tried to buy some green oranges (Battambang is ... read more

Before we left England, we knew that we wanted to do some volunteer work in Cambodia so we arranged to stay in rural Bospo village for a week to help Khmer New Generation Organization (KNGO). KNGO is run by a local man Saveth Sun who works very hard to help village children (who would otherwise have a very limited education prospects) to have daily free English classes and other educational benefits. We needed to test all the children in the school (over 220 in total) to find out their english ability so we could sort them into groups. This involved one-to-one testing and we were surprised by how good some of them were, particularly when you consider that the Khmer language is not formed from the alphabet. It was great chatting to the children as well ... read more

The Christmas tree in the hotel lobby was like Angelina Jolie at an all-you-can-eat buffet, or Gene Simmons on Antiques Roadshow: it just didn't belong. I am eating pineapples and drinking coconut water straight from the shell, it's over 90 degrees and I got sunburned at the pool yesterday. There is NO WAY it's December. Partridges and pear trees should be months away. Yet there it was, the Christmas tree, glowing with yuletide defiance. 'Don't you know where you are? Don't you know how hot it is? Stupid tree,' I thought. With some surprise I looked down at my knockoff retro Casio watch and saw DEC 1 starring back at me. WTF? So now that it's December and all, I should bring you up to date: After leaving Saigon my friend Emily and I traveled deeper ... read more

After a bum numbing 5 hours on the bus finally arrived in battambang, was desturbed by what the lonely planet describes as 'french colonial arcitechure', was wondering which era of french colonism they meant...the 1970's? Anyway is a big city with the usual scrum of tuk tuk drivers. found a decent hotel for $8 and after much haggling booked him for a trip out the next day with an american and french woman..$3 each.. Next day went on the bamboo railway, was so much fun clanking along the old railway, think is mostly a tourist thing as everyone turned up at same time and were despatched down the railway for about half an hour through the country side on what can only be described as a fence panel on wheels. eventually arrived at probably someones cafe ... read more

Having spent yesterday spectacularly achieving nothing, we resolved that we would carpe diem today. Unfortunately, when it comes to arising from slumber, my resolve is never particularly bullet proof. In truth, it’s somewhat woolly. Whilst travelling, we have discovered that one becomes subject to an ongoing internal battle between “I am free to do what I want when I want including doing nothing” and “ this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I really shouldn’t waste it seeing the same four walls of my hotel room hour after hour”. That battle results in days spent luxuriating in moving no more than 100m from the hotel and others spent trying to cram in as much as humanly possible. Having now spent two months on the road, we are starting to feel slightly less guilty about ... read more

I awoke and checked the watch, I was just settling back to sleep for another hour when the phone rings. The front desk tell Lou, who had been woken by the phone, something which she doesn’t understand and I can’t hear. (To be honest it isn’t hard to confuse Lou 10 seconds after she wakes) It seems that the bus company have decided to arbitrarily change our ticket time from 10:30 to 07:30 without any warning. We haven’t packed yet, we certainly haven’t woken up yet, and there is no way we can get on a bus in the next 15 minutes let alone 2 minutes. Lou asks the desk what we can do and luckily they agree to sort it out for us. We attempt to doze but it isn’t working for me so I ... read more
