Cambodia - May 21st - 25th, 2010 When leaving Saigon, we boarded an air conditioned bus for the 8 hour journey to Phnom Penh , the capitol of Cambodia. All was good for the first 3 hours as the bus was nearly empty and we could sprawl out. Shortly after crossing the border, the AC stopped working. Since it was an AC bus, the windows did not open, so for the last 5 hours of the trip we were trapped in what basically amounted to a sauna. We arrived in Phnom Penh on time, completely soaked with our own sweat, and I assume a few pounds lighter then when we started. We instantly liked it here as well... it was cheap, clean and the people were friendly. We found a great guesthouse (with a working AC) ... read more

The trip from Bangkok We left bright and early at 8am for our trip into Cambodia. We traveled by bus for about 5 hours to the border town of Aranya Prathet (better known for the Cambodia side of Poi Pet) and were quickly hassled out of $35 US each for our 3 month visa’s (as opposed to the $20 US that the guidebook and most other people we had spoken with told us it would be). We went through Thai customs, walked for about 20 minutes in no man’s land past a massive casino, entered Cambodia and were transported to the local bus station where we waited for an hour before finally leaving for Siem Reap. The bus ride into town wasn’t as bad as I had remembered, they had improved the condition of the ... read more

Our last day in Siem Reap is spent round the Angkor temples, we wake up to another scorcher of a day and even though it is before 9 am it is boiling hot. First stop is to get a ticket for the day, this has to have a photo of you and they take a picture which makes me look like a squashed frog, which Shenton finds very funny, somehow he ends up looking ok in his. The first temple we visit is Angkor Wat (which literally means the temple city) which is very true as this is where over 1 million people lived during the 12th to the 14th century. As we arrive the roads are well maintained and the grounds are very lush a complete contrast to the city just 10 minutes away. We ... read more

Got up at 4:30am... damn it was early! I met up with Christy and Sylvie at 5am and we went to Phnom Bahkeng to see the sunrise. I think we were a little late technically for the actual sunrise over the horizon but you couldn't see it anyway. We saw the sun rise over the clouds. This temple is on top of a little mountain which took 20 minutes to climb up. Next Bayon, with all the faces... was fairly big, lots of faces. Definite must see. We then took a break for a traditional Cambodian breakfast called Bobao, a rice porridge with chicken quite delicious. I also drank 2 cups of coffee with condensed milk, mmmmm. Ta Nei, very small very temple that was about a 10 minute walk. we were the only ones checking ... read more

Angkor Wat and the surrounding ancient city ruins were built from 800-1300 years ago and today are a source of insight into Asia’s past. It is also the largest religious structure in the world. And in case you still don’t know what they are, they are featured in the first Tomb Raider movie. When it was first ‘rediscovered’ in the 1980s, the temples had been swallowed by the jungle with many massive trees growing straight out of the walls. Today much of the temples have been restored, although they left some of the trees in place and you can see how the roots are both crushing and yet supporting the crumbling walls. Dana and I took 3 days to explore all the complexes enclosed in the 50km square area. We hired a Cambodian former monk to ... read more

We arrived in Siem Reap at 8am local time and it was already 27 degrees. We knew it would be hot at this time of the year but the reality has been blistering. Visa on arrival went very smoothly and the airport is gorgeous. Before we knew it we were out the front and the driver from the Tanei Guesthouse had a sign with our name. To all our great excitement we were lead to a Tuk Tuk and headed off. The kids thought this was the best thing ever, but little did they know they were going to stay somewhere that had a pool. We had a huge Family room waiting for us in this great guesthouse and the pool is small but very beautiful. Great value at only $30 night with Breakfast, free airport ... read more

And so, finally I can realise the long running ambition to see Angkor Wat... When I was planning my round-the-world excursion this one was always high on the list (perhaps top three) and I have always been fascinated by collapse of the sophisticated ancient civilisations such as the Khmer Empire... Like the Tāj, high expectations and a child like excitement that can only really be generated by a hand full of places engulf me upon arrival... As well as the heat! The blazing temperatures dictate that we have no real choice but to hire a Tuk tuk as cycling in these temperatures was simply out of the question... We decided to go for the $40 three day pass and in retrospect I can certainly say that (unless on a very tight schedule) to spend only one ... read more

SIEM REAP IS THE GATEWAY TO CAMBODIA'S SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL HEARTBEAT, THE TEMPLES OF ANGKOR. THE TOWN WAS A QUIET, SLEEPY BACKWATER UNTIL FEW YEARS AGO, BUT IT'S QUICKLY REINVENTING ITSELF AS A SOPHISTICATED CENTRE FOR THE NEW WAVE OF VISITORS PASSING THROUGH EACH YEAR. IF CAMBODIA IS HOT RIGHT NOW, SIEM REAP IS BOILING OVER! ;) Places I've been in Siem Reap are:- Angkor Wat Ta Prohm The Elephant Terrace Kbal Spean and Bantay Srei The Bayon Siem Reap - Killing Fields Seam Reap is the most peaceful trip I've ever done alone. I still remember when I woke up 5 am to watch the morning Sunrise and later the same day, the Sunset at Angkor Wat. This experience for me was beyond comparison. As soon as you reach the top view of Angkor Wat ... read more

The first time that i came to Angor was in 1999 and we went to Angkor wat for sunrise and then cimped to the top of the tempole and we were the only ones there for over one hour which as you can imiagine if you have been here is a pretty awsome thing. We went out to Batay Sri and then to the lingles that are in the river and there is a waterfall on the way and we shucked off our cloths and jumped in today if you did that you would have a hundred tourists taking your photos In Cambodia going to Sihanoukville or Siagon I would allways recomend Mekong ... read more

Angkor Wat, Banteay Kdei, Ta Prohm, Ta Keo, Angkor Thom, Terrace of the Elephants, Terrace of *gasps for air*... the Leper King, Phimeanakas, Baphuon, and Bayon Temple. *phew* Today was all about temples, temples, temples, and then walking, walking, walking. My boots & booty got dirty and my body was pouring sweat the whole day, but everything was worth it. :) I woke up today at 4:45 AM, which is insanely early, to see the sunrise in Angkor Wat. At first, I was kinda disappointed when I saw the Angkor Wat. The beauty of the structure is blocked by green scaffolding, so I really can't see the temple as it is. But, after staring at it for a few minutes, it doesn't look bad at all despite the scaffolding; well, I mean, its either that or ... read more
