This time round I elected to make use of the free sunset option with my Angkor pass (purchase your pass after 4:45pm and you are alowed into the park for free to watch the sunset) and pootled off to Angkor Wat to enjoy it relatively crowd free (although it was still anoyingly busy - didn't they know they were meant to be clambering up Phnom Bahkeng for sunset?) Still, managed to amble around soaking up the ambiance, in spite of the inconsiderates around me. Particular favourites are the amazing colours of the stones (alas my camera let me down, for whilst it has captured an essence of the beauty it failed to get anywhere near the truth if the matter), and also the stunning views framed by the many doorways (again camera just couldn't read my ... read more

Visiting the Angkor Sites First stop on the tour was to buy the entrance ticket - $20 for one day, $40 for 3 consecutive days and $40 for 3 days in a week. Despite asking Samnang and the ticket booth people, Monk still fails to understand exactly why there are 2 types of 3-day tickets given that the '3 days in a week' ticket also serves the purpose of 3 consecutive days. The ticket procedure is very efficent and includes a photograph being taken and printed on the pass - so be warned - if you want to keep the ticket as a souvenir, a hair brush after the tuk-tuk ride and a bit of lippy will save you embarassment in the years to come. Samnang suggested skipping Angkor Wat today and moving straight on to ... read more

What better way to shake off the horrors of the S-21 than by visiting one humanities greatest achievements? So it was that I headed off to the city of Siem Reap to go temple hunting. Arriving there I got caught up in a bit of a scam. Guy next to me on the bus had been recommended by his hotel in PP to go to their ‘sister’ hotel in SR and they would be picking him up from the bus stop. So I got in and headed off with him. Amazingly - their sister hotel was ‘full’ for the night, but don’t worry - they knew another place that might have a room left… For about 4 times the price. Ah, ok, so we’ll just get out and look then, thanks for the lift. Oh no, ... read more

On Tuesday we left Bangkok and flew to Siem Reap in Cambodia to spend a few days exploring the complex of Angkor which at its height in the 12th century had a population of about 1 million. At the time London had a population of just 50,000. Angkor was the capital of Cambodia at that time but as its influence waned the seat of power shifted to Phnom Penh, the current capital (which is our next stop). As a result of this shift of power Angkor's temples and palaces were abandoned and left to the elements. Now it is in ruins (but still very grand) and recently has developed into a major tourist attraction with visitors from all over the world. At the heart of the abandoned city is Angkor Thom. This was the administrative centre ... read more

Rany picked us up this morning at 5 am and we headed to Angkor Wat and took our places in front of its lagoon inside and waited for about an hour before the sun rose at about 6:20. By 7:00 we were at the next temple. The second was pretty neat because it was symmetrical with four small square ponds on each side of a larger square pond which had a building in the center. The third one was small and there really was only one thing to see there: the tree that grew over the back entrance. Next we went to Mebon temple and then the Pre Rup temple. These last two were nice and I enjoyed exploring them, though I think my favorite is still Ta Prohm with all the trees. We finished at ... read more

Hello all! Today we set out to explore the Temples of Angkor - a UNESCO world heritage site boasting over one thousand temples in varying states of repair. Our original plan was to get up super early and watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat (the largest and most famous temple) but after a few drinks the night before we decided it would be best to ignore the alarm! However, after finally dragging ourselves out of bed, we hired some bikes and eventually hit the road out to Angkor! After cycling for an hour or so we arrived at the Angkor Wat temple - an absolutely huge stone structure surrounded by a vast flooded moat - kodak moment if ever there was one! After resisting the urge to nudge each other into the murky moat water we ... read more

Next stop after Hoi An was Siem Reap. Our flight was bright and early so we could get started touring the ancient Angkor temples. After our 6th flight (of 13!!!) we arrived safe and sound in Siem Reap. The weather was perfect although I came down with a bit of a cold. We powered through though and saw some pretty spectacular stuff. We even met a wonderful family from New Dehli who invited us to join their tour for a full day. Many of the inscriptions at the temples were Hindu so they had a lot of insight and filled us in on the stories behind all of the stone carvings. The town of Siem Reap is lovely with a great night market and AMAZING Khmer food for so cheap! We enjoyed our first dinner out ... read more
