Efficiency. The bus left the hotel at exactly 7.30. Lisa was last out of the hotel but she made it. She is rarely on time for anything so I guess this was a fair effort for her. Took about 30 min to get to the freeway then on the freeway pretty well to the border. Not a lot occurred today so far, we basically set in a bus from 7.30 to 4.30. There were a number of breaks but nothing to mention. I was fairly under whelmed by the Cambodian cuisine on my firs try and I hope it was just me picking the wrong dish. It was some beef in a totally tasless sauce. Tonight we head out on the town to go for a tuk tuk ride around the city and then dinner with ... read more

Phnom Penh, Camboya, a 2 de abril del 2009. Saludos.

So we departed Ban Lung and by bus (again) continued to the other side of country, to Siem Reap - it's Indiana Jones time! Siem Reap would be a sleepy village without this world famous Cambodian tourist attraction - I'm of course speaking of the temples of Angkor, and as the brightest gem in the crown - Angkor Wat. There's not much to say about Angkor, since you can read all about it from Wikipedia, but at least I'd like to tell some views of my own. As an ancient capital of Khmer Kingdom it's still unbelievably well preserved. It's thousand times bigger and mightier than its little brother Wat Phou, as you careful readers may remember, that we visited in Laos. All the tourists do at least Angkor Wat and most likely also Bayon (those ... read more

Before we left Bangkok we took the very brave decision of letting a local travel agent organise our Cambodian visas for us, which meant we had to part with our passports for a day. Nervously we waited for their return and they did, with a genuine visa inside. Not only that but the very helpful travel agent advised us about visas for Laos and Vietnam - she was a real gem. The following day was the beginning of our Cambodia adventure and, yes, the VIP bus to the border turned out to be a minibus with 12 people and their luggage stuffed on it - we should know better by now. We stopped just before the border to get some food and our Cambodian guide, who would take us across the border, advised us to change ... read more

Another month and another country. Cambodia was in our sights on the six hour journey from Bangkok to the border. Once there we were greeted by a whole host of scam artists. "come with me for visa", "you have to have visa before you go passport control". This although not entirely wrong was a scam as they were charging about $5 more for a visa than at the actual checkpoint. The problem was that there was no signs explaining this so we just had to stay strong and push our way through to the correct visa point. Relieved to be through we then had to find a bus to Siem Reap which is a further three hours from the border. All tourists coming through were met by smartly dressed 'government officials' who supposedly were there to ... read more

The big one, started at 4:30AM, Teow was already waiting for us, the Angkor sunrise is very popular and it was great to be out before the sunrise, the air was very cool and on the tuk-tuk with the wind blowing it was almost chilly. On the way there we encountered a whole bunch of tuk-tuks making the same trip, Teow seemed to be doing his best to get us there before them and we overtook most of them. Still there were already quite a few people there when we got there, we got out our flashlights and started making our way to the temple, Shea enjoyed this part. Most people had gathered around the pond to catch the reflection on the surface when the sun comes up but seeing that we did have a bit ... read more

Having had our fill of temples in the heat, we wanted to do something else. Shea suggested we visit the museum and a tuk-tuk driver had mentioned the cultural village, but on checking out the cultural village I was under the impression that it catered more to large groups of tourists, there was nobody there! So we did a u-turn and headed to the museum. Pricy at $12 ea and we weren’t slowed to take pics unless we paid extra, like $3 I think, hence, no pictures! We did enjoy the experience, learnt a lot about the history and saw a lot of statues and carvings. Was it worth it? If you are into stuff like this, certainly. It was well put together and there were quite a few people there. Shea liked it, so what ... read more
