We had to go back to the Central market having discovered that the jeans (made in Thailand!) Shea had bought the day before were too small. Got that sorted out, then Shea bought her first piece of art work, an oil painting depicting the face at Bayon done in a slightly abstract manner. Our flight wasn’t until late afternoon so we decided to have a last wander around. We came upon a delightful shop selling chocolates called the Chocolate Shop (what else?) and couldn’t resist sampling a few, delish! We found the wine shop Manish had recommended but I couldn’t find the wine I was looking for. So we headed back to the supermarket and I ended with 4 bottles that I have to stuff into our bags. River kindly sent her driver to take us ... read more

With River and Manish of to work and Tara at school, Shea and I had the day to ourselves. First on the agenda was a visit to the Central Market, a former bus station currently under renovation. We did a little shopping there but it was starting to get hot so we headed off to destination number 2, the National Museum (yes, another museum!). We chanced upon a couple of interesting art galleries nearby and visited them too. Shea shows considerable maturity in her interest in art and has acquired an appreciation for abstracts and was quite taken by paintings of the Bayon face adorned with shades and lipstick! The National Museum is housed in a beautiful red building and cost $3 each to get in. We watched an animation revealing life at Angkor during its ... read more

Phnom Penh in the light of day reminded me of a cross between Hanoi and Bangkok, leaning more towards Hanoi, lots of motorcycles with whole families on them and seemingly free for all traffic. This morning, River and Manish are showing us around, starting with the infamous Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Now I have been a bit apprehensive about taking Shea because of what I had heard about it but after talking it over with her, she seemed ok about it. Maybe I’m over protective but the original idea was for this to be a cultural, artistic experience for her but she didn’t think it would take away from the experience, and of course she’s right. The museum is a former high school and I must admit the whole experience was very moving, I was brought ... read more

I bought my bus tickets to Phnom Penh through the hotel, we used the Mekong Express mainly because it had good reviews on the internet. The pick up was at 6:30 AM and the arrival in Phnom Penh around 1PM. The journey was long but comfortable, the road was narrow and we stopped for lunch. Shea and I wandered around the market and she managed to pick up a cool cap for $1, I was on the look out for the local delicacy, spider, but no luck, lots of other bugs but no spiders. The hotel had been very helpful in getting most of our transport needs. It helped that they always had a number of licensed tuk-tuk drivers available. They promised me a room with a balcony over the pool when I booked but when ... read more

Having had our fill of temples in the heat, we wanted to do something else. Shea suggested we visit the museum and a tuk-tuk driver had mentioned the cultural village, but on checking out the cultural village I was under the impression that it catered more to large groups of tourists, there was nobody there! So we did a u-turn and headed to the museum. Pricy at $12 ea and we weren’t slowed to take pics unless we paid extra, like $3 I think, hence, no pictures! We did enjoy the experience, learnt a lot about the history and saw a lot of statues and carvings. Was it worth it? If you are into stuff like this, certainly. It was well put together and there were quite a few people there. Shea liked it, so what ... read more

The big one, started at 4:30AM, Teow was already waiting for us, the Angkor sunrise is very popular and it was great to be out before the sunrise, the air was very cool and on the tuk-tuk with the wind blowing it was almost chilly. On the way there we encountered a whole bunch of tuk-tuks making the same trip, Teow seemed to be doing his best to get us there before them and we overtook most of them. Still there were already quite a few people there when we got there, we got out our flashlights and started making our way to the temple, Shea enjoyed this part. Most people had gathered around the pond to catch the reflection on the surface when the sun comes up but seeing that we did have a bit ... read more

Did what is known as the ‘Grand Tour’ today. Started at 7:30AM after our complementary breakfast at the hotel, tuk-tuk picked us up and took us to the first of 5 temple ruins on our list today. The morning air was fresh and cool, and we were really looking forward to this. Today’s tuk-tuk driver went by the name of Teow which sounds a bit like the Thai word for journey or vacation, Shea thought it was just right! I’ll let the pictures do the talking, we must have taken close to a hundred pictures. Made some new friends, a couple staying at the same hotel, they recognized the key fob hanging on my bag. This is one aspect of our holiday that Shea is finding quaint and interesting. She noticed that fellow travelers are often ... read more

Day 1 Caught our 3:30 AM bus out of the Mor Chit Bus Station, tickets cost us 212 baht each. The seats were hard but the ride smooth and we dozed most of the way. Arrived at Aranyapatet just after 7:30AM and caught a tuk-tuk to the border (50 baht) and the confusion began. There aren’t any clear signs as to which way to go and a bunch of guys telling u different things. Good thing we already got our visas and didn’t have to deal with the visa scams. There were men trying to charge 20 baht to fill in departure cards, arrival cards and border passes, whatever it takes to make a buck I guess. Anyway, got through all of that, picked up a bottle of Penfolds Bin 8 for 400 baht (probably a ... read more

It's been a long time since I've blogged, have travelled many destinations since then and it's time to get blogging again. This time Brens is in Uganda doing her thing and my daughter is old enough to accompany me on these 'adventures' which will seem pretty tame by some of the other blogs on this site. In anycase a new chapter begins. Shea's been to a few destinations S'pore being her favorite so far, but this time she's going to do it daddy's way, i.e. on a budget! I suggested Angkor Wat to her and she said "What's that?" So I told her to do some research and she did and so here we are. Did my internet research, often with Shea by my side helping to choose the hotel and looking at possibilities and even ... read more

What do you do once unpacked and settled in shopping paradise? Well actually we rested and took it easy for a while and didn’t venture out till dinner time. Just watched T.V. and even had a bit of a nap, this was to be the pace of this trip really, instead of a mad rush to see everything and go everywhere we decided to do whatever we fancied at the time. So having rested we got a bit hungry and ventured out into the night and headed straight to the Temple Market. Comfort House turned out to be well located for our needs (even though I think they ripped us off on the pricing giving us the excuse that it was labor week-end and everything would be booked out with a large influx of Chinese tourist, ... read more
