We departed for the Mekong delta tour at about 8am. There were 13 of us all up and it took about 2 hours to get there. We went for a boat ride and saw some very interesting things. They make some coconut lilies here that are really excellent. We bought a heap but we are not sure if they will let us take them into Australia. The trip was pleasant enough but it soon dawned on us that it was just a way of them taking us to a range of places where the locals can try to flog us some stuff. This began to wear thin after a while and by the last stop where under the pretext of getting some coffee it turned out to be a very expensive foreigner only gift shop, I ... read more

We arrived in Chau doc about 5.30 pm. We were very late and things were a bit of a rush. We landed at a pier that was very old and decrepit. We had to carry our bags up a very steep ramp to the top of the river. I guess the river must be tidal as the ramp was designed to move up and down with the movement of the water level. Once on dry land we put our bags on the back of some Vietnamese cyclos (which are totally different from the Cambodian variety) and headed off. We walked to our hotel down the road. As usual the place was mayhem and people and motorbikes were everywhere. It occurred to me that these people have evolved through the usual modes of transport such as walking, ... read more

Just to remind you Pol pot came to power inn 1975 and the Vietnamese invaded in 1979, so a heck of a lot of damage for 4-5 years. Moving on. Last night we went for a tuk tuk ride into town. We went to the Independence monument. It was very pretty, all lit up for Khmer New Year celebrations. We then walked along the boulevard for a while. Phnom Pen can be a very beautiful place. There were lots of interesting things look at on the streets with heaps of people everywhere. Its very hard for an Ausie to appreciate the idea of “heaps of people. It just packed no matter where you are. Street corners, footpaths, roads, parks. Etc. The previous day we went for a cyclo ride around town. I really enjoyed it. A ... read more

Today was not a nice day. We spent half of it at the S21 torture prison that Poll Pots regime ran here in Phnom Pen and then we went out to the Killing fields where they finished the job. The population of Cambodia was 7 million when Pol Pot cam to power and only 4 million by the time the Vietnamese liberated Cambodia of his scourge. I will not describe the day in any detail as it was overall a very disturbing and uncomfortable experience but none the less a necessary one. Lisa got upset a few times and chose to leave the tour to sit outside. I think you would have to be crazy not to react the same way. I think all of us felt sick in the stomach. That was all we did ... read more

We are now in Phnom Penh. This just like Bangkok is one seriously huge city. It took us 8 hours to drive here with a few stops along the way. We got going at 7.30 in the morning from Siem Riep. We made a few stops along the way. The first stop was to pick up some sticky rice that was cooked in bamboo for 12 hours with black beans and coconut milk. I thought it tasted very bland and Lisa thought it needed some chocolate. Apparently the travelers along the road pick it up to eat during the day. We also stopped at a ski farm where they grow silk worms to make silk and they also had some women with looms, weaving silk scarves. We had lunch there prepared by the ladies that worked ... read more

We have now done 2 days of Ankor temples. The first day went from 7.30 to 5 and today from 5.30 to 12. The reason for me not writing is that I have been a little sick with “Cambodian Beelly”. Last night I felt awful. My stomach was doing all sorts of ugly things and my temperature was 39+C. It had sort of built up over the last few days and I chose to ignore it hoping that it would go away after a few days, but in reality I was just getting worse. Finally dosed my self up with antibiotics and panadol and stayed in bed mostly after the days activites. I am feeling a lot better now and I hope it stays that way. Funnily enough Lisa has not suffered from the same ... read more

Efficiency. The bus left the hotel at exactly 7.30. Lisa was last out of the hotel but she made it. She is rarely on time for anything so I guess this was a fair effort for her. Took about 30 min to get to the freeway then on the freeway pretty well to the border. Not a lot occurred today so far, we basically set in a bus from 7.30 to 4.30. There were a number of breaks but nothing to mention. I was fairly under whelmed by the Cambodian cuisine on my firs try and I hope it was just me picking the wrong dish. It was some beef in a totally tasless sauce. Tonight we head out on the town to go for a tuk tuk ride around the city and then dinner with ... read more

Asia » Thailand April 6th 2010

We went out into the city and things were really starting to pick up. A street that was totally empty before has now been transformed into an open air market. Patpong is the place and we are right across the road from it. It is the famous red light district of Bangkok. The market is great with lots of fake stuff such as Lois Vuitton handbags and other knock off things like watches and perfumes. We sat down at an open air restaurant and had a beer and some food. The Tom Yum soup was awesome. So much more flavorsome than the stuff you buy in Adelaide. We also had some noodles. While eating we were constantly harassed by various street sellers. Watches, jewelry fake tattoos, etc etc. Its never ending. Everyone always wants something from ... read more

Well we got on the plane OK in Adelaide . Great seat on the plane. The Airbus only had two seats on the side and then four in the middle. We were on the side so we had a great time and we did not have to worry about any one sitting next to us with all the body odor and personal space invasion that that entails. The Airbus is amazing. Each seat is rally large with lots of space and each seat has a large LCD display that can stream over 600 separate shows to you individually. That way you can watch all the latest movies such as Avatar, Hurt Locker etc etc plus hundreds of others plus heaps of TV shows. It also has a game channel so if you are bored you can ... read more

This is a test of our travel blog. Today we had an easter Willmott luncheon in the park. The weather was perfect and wile the park was busy there was plenty of space for all. Lunch was quiche with salad, followed by Firda's apple crumble. Geoff, Carlie, Sue, Jim, Julie, Lisa, Istvan, Frida, Zoli, Princess and Gabor turned up around 12.30 and we left at 4 pm. Istan and I played some cricket and as usual he managed to smash me all over the park. Signing off Gabor and Istvan... read more
