We made our way East from Siem Reap to Kratie, this took a monotonous 12 hours by various buses all of which broke down at some point. We eventually arrived in the dark, never a favourite for any traveller, but were kindly greeted by a man and his tuk tuk and a sign for the guesthouse we had earmarked to head too. So off we went and ended up at YouHong Guesthouse $5 for a double en-suite, not bad hey!!!! There isn’t much else to say about our time here, there really was nothing to do here. We had a potter along the banks of the Mekong, had a few beers and chatted to fellow travellers. We could have took a trip to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins but the bus journey the day before had ... read more

23.07.09 During my last days in Cambodia I had to learn that not everything can be perfect all the time. After a great time in Phnom Penh I enthusiastically went to Kratie which is famous for it’s fresh water dolphins and of course I didn’t want to miss them out. As soon as I had arrived to this little place on the Mekong river, I looked for a guesthouse which already seemed quite abandoned when I arrived. The room was big, but already when I checked in I realized that it was not the cleanest place. But the hot water shower convinced me to stay (you can’t imagine how good it feels to take a hot shower after weeks of cold showers… my feet actually got clean again!!) After the shower I was full of energy ... read more

Day 375: Thursday 9 July - Greasing palms I’m sad to be leaving Laos this morning. It has been my favourite country in Southeast Asia to date and one of my favourite countries on my journey so far. Papa takes me across to Ban Nakasang on his boat, offering me my second shot of Lao Lao of the day (he’s already given me one with my breakfast!) on the way. This is yet another example of why I have come to love this country - the people. Laotian’s are the most warm, friendly and generous people I have met anywhere in the world. I will miss the country, but above all I will miss the people. Many of my highlights involve encounters with the locals - sharing in the Akha culture in Muang Sing; the two ... read more

The Cambodian border was a little wooden hut about 100m further down the road than the Lao hut that stamped us out. We were left standing on the roadside with our backpacks for ages while visas were issued to everyone. Luckily a lovely Cambodian lady has seized the opportunity and arrived with a cool box full of drinks for sale at the bargain price of US$1. They seem to prefer US$ to their own currency here, not sure why, perhaps they think America is cooler but anyway they only have the notes so any small change is given in Real which means a wallet full of notes totalling about 10p. Eventually the bus is on the move and headed for Strung Treng where we swapped onto another one. I wasn’t sure we were all going to ... read more

I had picked up a Cambodian visa at the embassy in Vientiane as to not get overcharged at the border, a very common story. The borders are usually a bit sketchy. From the border I went to Kratie in central-east Cambodia. The town was littered with trash which is common in Cambodia, but the ouskirts were beautiful. Kratie is on the banks of the Mekong River and is known for a colony of the endangered Irawaddy Dolphins. I took a boat out to see the dolphins and although they only come up briefly for air you could see their characteristically round nose pop out of the water before the dorsal fin, then tail. There were about six or seven that were around the boat, but never closer than 30ft or so. They were too quick to ... read more

Whilst in Penom Penh we were torn between which part of the country to go to next. Basially we wanted to do everything which just wasn't going to be possible in the time we had so in the end we decided to head to Kratie which is towards the east of the country and from here we could either go North to the Ratanakiri Province or far East to Mondolkiri Province. The bus ride from Phnom Penh to Kratie was another uneventul journey with the only slight problem being that it took us 8 hours instead of the advertised 6. This was mainly due to the bus driver deciding to stop here there and everywhere to go for a wee or have a cigarette but no matter we got there in one piece and were left ... read more

"hello were you from?" "Belgium" "Capital of Belgium is Brussels; 10 million people... minus two 'cause you are here!"
