Today started a bit like yesterday, but after having some breakfast we booked a tuk tuk to take us to go and see some rare dolphins. The Irrawaddy dolphins are native to this part of the Mekong with only about 100 left in the world. The fresh water dolphin is very shy and its numbers have slowly decreased due to fishing nets and poisoning from the locals. Nowadays the Laos community fisheries and dolphin protection project compensate for any damaged fishing nets, so the numbers will pick up again. Being driven out to the next village about 15km away to then get on a long tail boat and taken only 10 minutes up the river we got our first sighting. Sitting stationary we waited while scanning the water and got a few more sightings of the ... read more

Having allowed ourselves a bit of a lay in we headed out for some breakfast at 11.00. Kratie ( pronounced Krachie) is a pretty small town sitting on the side of the Mekong river, in itself not too much to offer apart from in the surrounding areas where theres enough stuff to make it worth a visit for a day or two. Back at the only Cambodian/western restaurant in town Kate and I decided to hire pushbikes for the afternoon. Sitting in the Mekong adjacent to Kratie is a small island called Koh Trong and according to my book is definitely worth an explore on a bike for an afternoon - so perfect. Off we headed down a flight of steps to the boat and got on a waiting taxi boat, which only leaves when its ... read more

Ko Pdao- Homestay on the Mekong Myself, Will and an Italian guy named Flavio decided to venture up the Mekong river to experience a Cambodian homestay. We arrived on Ko Pdao like a scene out of ship wrecked and were greeted by a deserted tourist centre and no sign of anyone who spoke English. After walking some distance up a stoney, dry path we met a nice lady who spoke some broken English. Luckily with the use of our phone and lots of pointing she managed to organise us a homestay. On the island the families rotate the tourists wanting to use the homestay. This is the fairest way to share the profits as it provides a vital source of income. After getting lost and relying on the very limited translation phrases in the Lonely Plannet ... read more

Mui ne was cool. It's a beach resort, and I was sort of hoping it would be a quieter nha trang. Turns out you can't really access the beach; it's more of a fishing hub than a sand-and-parasols kind of place. In any event, the backpacker hotels had swimming pools and the weather was sunny and very hot. I bumped into the guys again in mui ne. We and others from the main backpacker hotel flocked en masse to dragon beach bar in the evenings and danced and got drunk. A guy I got to know got punched in the face by a moto taxi driver. I had an interesting second evening. On my last full day I visited nearby sand dunes, which were quite impressive, albeit manifestly exploited. From mui ne I made my way ... read more

Just five and a half hours after being picked up by a mini bus at Nature Lodge in Sen Monorom, I'm stepping out into the heat and chaos of Kratie's 'bus terminal'. There is no terminal as such, simply a big open dusty area where buses constantly come and go from. The trip was an easy one in an actual small bus, with air conditioning, one person per seat. The road was bitumen all the way, most of it a decent highway. This trip cost $7 which I paid the bus driver for when we reached Kratie. I had decided on The Silver Dolphin Guesthouse as my first port of call for a room. It was listed in Lonely Planet so I figured it would be okay. Only one room available, at $4 per night, with ... read more

If there was one place during our entire Asian trip that I probably would have been content not visiting, it would be Kratie. Not that the town is terrible in any way: it was colonially quaint and along the Mekong River, with an undeveloped, pretty countryside not far away. It simply comes down to boredom: there wasn’t that much to see. Thus, our visit was more about breaking up our route to Laos. The one noteworthy visit to make, and undoubtedly the town’s main attraction, is to hire a longtail boat to take you along the Mekong River to view the Irrawaddy dolphins. Although these creatures were reminiscent of the pink dolphins in the Amazon River we’d seen while in Brazil, they are not actually freshwater, river dolphins as I’d initially thought: they’re oceanic dolphins that ... read more

Well I am almost into the travelling part of my time in Cambodia now. I am due to come back to England on June 12th, so I have got a lot to fit in. I am meant to be returning to my voluntary placement to do two days of work on Thursday and Friday and then that is finished. Actually I have just returned from a long weekend in Kratie, which is situated about 350 kilometres north east of Phnom Penh along the Mekong river. It involved an eight hour bus journey there and back, which was very busy as many locals were visiting relatives for the king's birthday holiday weekend. It was interesting to pass through rural Cambodia and see the typical Khmer wooden houses built on stilts and realise how remote and poor the ... read more

Unlike Lance Armstrong, the only thing we had running through our veins when heading out on our bikes yesterday was excitement about seeing the freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins. We found the bike route through the Mekong Discovery Trail, which is basically just a series of maps outlining different routes that you can bike around the Kratie/Stung Treng area, promoting local tourism. There are two places where you can easily see dolphins around this area - Kampi Rapids, 15km out of town, and the island of Koh Phdao, 35km away. We thought that Koh Phdao would be less busy with tourists than Kampi, and both wanted the chance to get a bit further out into the countryside, so Koh Phdao it was. I was a bit nervous about the bike ride up there, seeing as I tend to ... read more

Days 168-169 (Fri 22nd – Sat 23rdFeb) Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri So, I got a midday bus to Sen Monorom, Cambodia’s wild east. The bus took around 5 hours and a pretty uneventful trip. I arrived around dusk. It was pretty wild on first impressions. It was very windy and significantly colder than anywhere else in Cambodia has been. I checked into a guesthouse, had a cold shower as there was no cold water, then popped out for dinner. Within 20 seconds of leaving the guesthouse the power in the town went. As I had no idea where anything was and it was completely dark I went back into the guesthouse until the power came back on. When the power came back on I went to a restaurant called the Khmer Kitchen and had some food. I ... read more
